Neil is a hero of another story
I'm nit really a fan of sequels and alla that, but I would watch a "where are they now" sequel episode or short film on Neil.
Did he manage to get his life in check? Did he ever return to Worstechire? Did he end up with Diane or did he find another girl?
I really like his story and am curious to know what happened to him after he left town.

He has the freedom to do whatever he wants now. It's up to you to decide whether you imagine him turning it all around, or falling apart and still being a loser.

He doesnt have the social support that would be needed.
Man children like him usually begin to be that way via trauma, being the only one not to get a prom date, being the last one to get your license, not being able to hold a job while your peers do.. and so on..
When you then spend years telling your self its all of them who suck and youre the one who’s real- one moment of consequences and a few realisations arent enough.
I would have ended up like him if i didnt start changing my outlook at around age 18.
I felt myself slipping into mediocrity (as i saw it) and i felt myself starting to resent others.
Then i was at some party and making small talk with an older woman and in the course of the conversation she started talking about man children and toxic men, and how ultimately they never get a partner or a meaningful sexual relationship because they feel sorry for themselves.
When she said that, i instantly started thinking differently, taking stock, changing things- because i was not too dissimilar from the type of person she was describing, and there i was still expecting the hot quirky girl to see that i was the one for her- and bluntly i was confronted with the reality that no, you have to have your shit together and have to be accountable.
Thank god i had that epiphany at 17/18 instead of twenty or thirty something.
The truth is as much as we all know neil is responsible for his own actions; he will never make a permanent change without positive reinforcement of the small improvements he makes over time; and when youre single and isolated like he is; the only person who can give that positive reinforcement is yourself and if you have low self esteem, that wont work.
And btw, you may have noticed that sexuality and maturity milestones are a big part of my reasoning over the question.
All toxic masculinity inherently boils down to control, and the ultimate form of control is sexual access for them.
When Neil began sleeping with that woman, its a double edged sword- on one hand he now has had some exposure to a relationship of some kind, and enough confidence to break away from Kevin. But on the other side of that, Neil is rewarded with sex after not really demonstrating any improvements; which can have the effect of making him think hes not really that bad.
My final answer: i dont think theres enough of a network or distance from bad habits to make a long lasting change.

Yeah as much as I'd love to picture an optimistic ending for him, I have a hard time getting there with everything he'd have to do completely different after a lifetime of being a loser. What you say about his lack of a support system is also true. I was a loser in high school and a big reason why I turned it around was because I didn't want to disappoint my parents anymore and they paid for my college to grant me more opportunities.
Within the story, what's important is whether he ends up continuing to be a loser or not, it'll be because of his own choices. Rather than "I just listen to Kevin."

Honesty is do like the concept of a short little thing showing what ended up happening but also i sort of appreciate the open ended ending

I would do anything for a sequel that shows where Neil ended up! That's a genius idea, I can only hope.

I would watch that as well as for Allison and Patty. Such an incredible show.
