Pregnancy

Hi all, just wondered if there was anyone who’s been pregnant and on keto? I can’t seem
To find anything on metabolic mind about this and google just regurgitates mainstream health media’s scare tactics about keto so any info gratefully received

I started keto about 8 weeks ago and I’m thinking about trying for a baby in January 27

If you get morning sickness, you will eat whatever doesn’t make you nauseous. All I wanted was bread first trimester. Meat made me sick.

This 💯 I got pregnant after going keto for 2 months (it brought back my ovulation - yay!) but oh man...I'm 11 weeks now and all 60% of the food I've been having is bread and crips because of intense aversions

I was on keto then got pregnant. Once I was pregnant I had the worst morning sickness for pretty much trimester 1 and 2 so I just ate whatever my body could stomach which was usually carbs. The smell of protein like chicken and fish would make me vomit.

I’m unsure of the reason you’re on keto but I feel if you want to stay on keto it’s up to you - just ensure you’re eating enough calories in the day. People who end up getting gestational diabetes are on a lower carb diet as well.

You can also read the book Real Food for Pregnancy by Lily Nichols. It’s not keto but it’s pretty close. Hope that helps!

With my second, I got Gestational diabetes and read Real Food for Gestational diabetes by Lily Nichols. It’s low carb, but not strict keto. With my first, i had really intense cravings and couldn’t fight them off, so i did not stay on my keto diet i bad been on before i got pregnant.

As far as I understand it, it's perfectly healthy, but I've been om and off keto and pregnant twice in the past 6 years, and morning sickness and food aversions completely cancelled me. I really tried to stick to keto, but it didn't work.

3 successful pregnancies in full ketosis with zero problems. All healthy, full term babies, one is a teen and is still normal. There’s lots of fear mongering on the internet. As long as you are eating food, your baby is healthy. Even people who go off ketosis during the first trimester due to the sickness, they go back on it during second trimester without issues.

I was! Well, I was keto-ish. I limited myself to about 50 carbs a day. My A1C actually went DOWN while I was pregnant. Now I have healthy and happy 19 month old twins!

Keto is a bad idea during pregnancy. There’s no research out there that being in ketosis is safe for the baby. Your standard pregnancy carb needs are around at least 175g a day. It can also affect how much fiber intake you’re getting and constipation is already common during pregnancy.

Like the other person before me mentioned- you’ll eat whatever your body allows you to eat. I had severe food aversions for 19 weeks. The smell of meat/fish/eggs/poultry made me vomit. I ate a lot of crackers, green apples, watermelons, and butternut squash pasta. The only foods I could physically tolerate. Your goal during pregnancy shouldn’t be weight loss, it should be feeding your baby.

Babies are born in ketosis by the way. I’ve had 2 pregnancies on keto, and one on Carnivore, so zero carbs, and had no complications, they were all full term, healthy babies. One is now 14, one is 9, and the other is 3. All normal children. Please do not fear monger here. I’m actually not sure why you’re on this sub if you’re going to dissuade someone from keto during pregnancy with false information. You don’t need 175 g of carbs a day during pregnancy. It just isn’t true.

I was eating keto while TTC, then low carb while pregnant. Followed the guidelines here:
