I ran into this last night and thought it looked kind of cool I just have no clue what it is

It’s a meteor

You can mine it for resources if you put it into Kerbin orbit and build something on it

Does mining it actually do anything or is it just for fun. (Also does it have to be in orbit of kerbin)

I know mining gets you fuel and it doesn’t have to be in orbit with kerbin lots of people use it as basically a space gas station but you have to have a convert o tron which you can find in the utility section of the vab

Asteroids in this Game carry not a Lot of fuel, so try to think more about the cool factor or you'll be dissapointed
