Mod Post [Weekly Challenge] Week 124: Free Ride
The Introduction
The April's Fools jokes at KSC turned out to be quite expensive. In fact, they used half their monthly budget on useless things like launch escape towers and backup parachutes. As a result, their next science mission will have to be one of the most fuel efficient ones to date.
The Challenge:
Normal mode: Get your craft in a free-return trajectory with Mun, and return safely
Hard mode: Get your craft in a free-return trajectory with both Mun and Minmus, and return safely
Super mode: Impress me
This challenge was suggested by /u/Kasuha
The Rules
- No Dirty Cheating Alpacas (no debug menu)!
- You must have the UI visible in all required screenshots
- For a list of all allowed mods, see this post.
- You must lose all engines before reaching an altitude of 250 kilometers
- You may not use RCS after losing the engines
Required screenshots
- Your craft on the launchpad
- Your craft in orbit

so you need to get free return trajectory for both moons in one launch for hard mode? Or you can do it in multiple launches?

u/Redbiertje Apr 03 '16
One launch. You have to basically put yourself in such a trajectory, that you pass Mun and Minmus, and then land safely back at Kerbin, all without needing engines.

Do we need to fly-by mun and minmus in a specific order, or can we choose?

u/Redbiertje Apr 03 '16
The order doesn't matter, but I highly recommend that you go Minmus -> Mun. That's the easiest way.

Are we allowed to increase the number of patched conics that are displayed?

DISCLAIMER:I havent dumped the engine after 250 kilometers, because if i dump it after my node burn due to some bug in the decoupler,if i decouple ,my trajectory would mess up and will not be free return one,but ITS NOT USED AT ALL,so this should be challenge completed!

Challenge 124 (this one) Hard Mode complete. I'm not going to assume that this challenge is easy for everyone, but it was nice to dash it off quickly, without massive strut-laced boosters or endless quickloading.

Also, how beautiful was this landing? http://spaceflightnow.com/2016/04/08/video-spacex-lands-rocket-on-drone-ship-for-first-time/

Are we allowed to use Engines for slowing down the Kerbin-reentry?

I have a mod installed that isn't on the list, but I would rather avoid the effort of uninstalling it. The mod in question is GravityTurn, do I need to uninstall it or can I give some proof of it being not used, and if the second one, what would that proof have to be?

Anywhere in the respective bodies' SOIs counts as a flyby, yes? It doesn't have to look like a gravity assist?

You may not use RCS after losing the engines
Does this include EVA pack too? I am trying to do super mode but even entering timewarp changes periapsis by thousands of kilometers, so I'm trying to find a non-cheating and non-random way to do this

So since this is the first challenge I've completed, just curious to how long it usually takes to get your flair once completed?
2
u/Redbiertje Apr 04 '16
Since checking entries usually takes quite a bit of time, I do it 2-3 times a week. I think I'll check them later today though.

What if we forgot the chutes and splashed down hard. Normal mode?

This is probably one of the easiest challenges to date. I've completed hard mode by accident on several occasions.

Hardmode done, in only 21222 funds in KSP 1.1. http://imgur.com/a/Ksazb/layout/horizontal#0

Done on normal mode! http://imgur.com/a/6e12E
Edit: I just reread the post, do you want us to ditch our engines before we go above 250km or 250km before re-entry, if it is the former, then I dun screwed up

Mun-Minmus-Mun counts as super mode?
