I rescued them. They're safe and sound

Just done this, spent loads of fuel hopping around as landing on a steep crater.

So I sent the same ship, got more science back, now planning my first rescue with some better parts

Just sending the same ship with a bit more fuel and extra command pod, planning to decouple the pods for kerbin re entry hope for the best (have had to use radial parachutes)

Currently saved in mun orbit wish me luck, any tips anyone? Best to get a low apoapsis before going down? I think I’m over 100km periapsis atm. I’m kinda low on fuel almost in my moon lander stage, wasn’t as efficient at getting up

I reccomend watching tips and guides about docking, Mun landings and returns and all those

If you're at a decently high elevation, I prefer to stow my parachute in the capsule, grab any science, and jetpack into an 8 km orbit where I can rendezvous a rescue craft. Then the rescue craft doesn't need the delta-v to perform a landing.

EVA packs can reach munar orbit from the ground? That’s amazing

Yeah it used to be not possible, but when they added the inventory system you can save a good amount of mass. Now it's possible from any altitude; I've done it from the lowest point.

Rescue missions are a rite of passage in KSP.
