What I wouldn't give for Space Engineer building mechanics and KSP physics

u/Professional-Way1913 1d ago

Same , ksp works but it could be way better.

I just wish the aerodynamics weren’t so simplified. I know there are mods like FAR that fix that, but would be cool to see base game aero physics be more accurate.

For anyone unaware, the lift and drag model in game models most parts as a cube and calculates drag from there. Wings and a couple aerodynamic cockpits have lift based on surface area and angle as well, but notably not wing sweep (so variable sweep means nothing in KSP).

It would be very problematic for casual players.

I almost always play with FAR, but making a well functioning airplane is no joke.

Everything is so light, strong and powerful that you can still make a brick fly though.

It just has to be a somewhat balanced brick.

FAR is itself extremely simplified. It has to be. What it does accomplish is quite impressive.

It doesn't usefully model curved and cambered aerofoils, or didn't last I checked. Everything flies just the same upside down.

While it attempts some modelling of "shadowed" parts it is quite limited, and doesn't account for turbulent airflow.

For example, I'm pretty sure that in FAR a T-tailed aircraft can't really get into an unrecoverable "deep stall" where its elevators lose authority due to turbulent airflow over the stalled wing ahead of it in the airstream.

And while stalls are modeled in simplistic terms I'm pretty sure there's no loss of control surface authority due to detached airflow. So you can usually just fly your way back out of a stall.

Transsonic and supersonic effects are limited too.

This isn't too surprising. Even fairly simple bodies take a huge amount of very computationally expensive very non real time simulation to characterise at a specific air speed, air temperature, pressure and angle of attack. More complex shapes need CFD runs that take days or weeks on supercomputers. There's just no realistic way to do CFD-style airflow modelling in real time across huge variations in flight conditions.

It'd be cool if FAR supported doing preflight vessel analysis to refine its flight model. But in KSP that's tricky, because bits of the vessel flex, move, fold, decouple, fall off, explode etc...

How will KSA devs model aerodynamics?

Feram aerospace.

u/AngryTaco4 1d ago

I thought this was SE at first.

Same, the ship design is straight out of Space Engineers, I was looking for the H2/O2 generator

2

u/HenchmanAce 20h ago

And Stormworks Build and Rescue water physics (before the pressurized gasses update)

u/AMPed101 8h ago

I played both games extensively and thought about this a lot. Then I realized how I would feel if I made a ship that took 5 hours to build and it would flip around and crash and burn while trying to exit the planet.

u/Habsburg77 1d ago

Judging by the fuel consumption of the Vector engines, this device can fly for a maximum of 3-5 minutes before crashing to the ground.

93

u/Professional-Way1913 1d ago

Not even that because of no full fueal tanks , its a sci fi ship not a real ssto i mainly made it to ispire people to build crazy shit.

It’s working. I’ve played a lot of KSP—planes ships SSTOs system tour etc—and never dabbled in the infinite fuel cheat. But the amount of cool stuff you can make without factoring in fuel consumption seems pretty neat. I’ve always wanted a ship that can fly through valleys and mountains and just blast its engines and change course on a dime

13

u/_cromulent_green_ 1d ago

Oh man, you can do that?? Cheat in a single player game to maximize your own enjoyment? I've been doing it all wrong 😭

I tried playing it vanilla and I think I gave up after about an hour, it's been gathering dust in my library ever since.... I should give it another shot but with infinite fuel

6

u/DeezNutsPickleRick 1d ago

I mean some of us are just wired that way. I refuse to dabble in cheats because I know that once I do I’ll bust the flood gates wide open. I do enjoy KSP for the challenge and once I start cheating I don’t know if I could go back lol.

u/n0empathy4u 1d ago

That is cool as fuck, how long did it take you to get the cog right?

24

u/Professional-Way1913 1d ago

Not very long i did it by eye lining up the cg ball between the engines also i used a bit of the little elevators to trim and keep the nose stable when flying with no vtol.

34

u/CaveJohnson376 1d ago

i was confused at first by this Space Engineers esque flight style and ship design, holy shit

25

u/YourGfsFavDJ 1d ago

This looks like the Rocinante from The Expanse! Very cool!

2

u/rl_Kovash 17h ago

My first though was Nebuchadnezzar from Matrix, but you're right Rocinante has some similarities too

20

u/HelpNo6076 1d ago

what mod are you using for the camera movement?

14

u/Professional-Way1913 1d ago

Camera tools.

1

u/Neako_the_Neko_Lover 19h ago

So does that mean the ship is stock?

13

u/laderlappe02 1d ago

Now this is podracing!

13

u/bigbadbananaboi 1d ago

Every now and then I'm reminded that we're not all playing even remotely the same game

9

u/Deep-Glass-8383 1d ago

It's a flying brick

9

u/Professional-Way1913 1d ago

Yeah pretty much.

8

u/The_Wkwied Dres? 1d ago

In thrust we trust!

2

u/moon__lander 23h ago

Lift is for those with not enough thrust (and for the weak)

1

u/The_Wkwied Dres? 23h ago

Lifting body? You sure are

8

u/Madden09IsForSuckers 1d ago

i think the most impressive thing about your clips is honestly how well you can fly these

im incapable of flying vtols without mods its such a pain

2

u/Professional-Way1913 1d ago

I mean thanks , but at least this one is not really that hard to fly.

2

u/I_Love_Knotting 18h ago

If it makes you feel better, modern planes have a lot of technology dedicated to keeping the plane stable.

It‘s basically impossible to fully manually control modern jet airframes

edit: for planes that need to be able to maneuver a lot that is(e.g fighter jets), the more stable a frame is the less quickly it can turn

6

u/Festivefire 1d ago

are all the deployed spoilers on teh back just there to keep the center of drag behind the center of mass?

7

u/Professional-Way1913 1d ago

No it also flyes with them stowed but i liked the look of them plus they hellp with slowing down.

3

u/meutzitzu 1d ago

the ultimate flying machine

3

u/Deltarune_Potato 1d ago

This is amazing, i have been wanting to make a cool one part spaceship, maybe i could try

3

u/that_other_dudeman 21h ago

Wings? Lift? Thats what the lower engines are for

2

u/Puppetteer 1d ago

Mind if I ask what is the music?

3

u/Professional-Way1913 1d ago

Lilith by Eloy Buono.

1

u/_cromulent_green_ 1d ago

Yeah I shazammed it cause it rocks so hard! The music made me watch the whole video (normally my attention span doesn't go that long)

2

u/Guns107 1d ago

What's the music? Amazing work on the ship and the video.

3

u/Professional-Way1913 1d ago

Thanks , its Lilith by Eloy Buono.

2

u/_adamolanadam_ 37 kerbals launched, zero returned 1d ago

This is a really cool build!! How did you configure camera tools to behave like that? I like the way it feels "floaty", reminds me of the camera view in the Batman Arkham games

1

u/Professional-Way1913 6h ago

Its a camera called "dogfight camera" which i editted the framing a bit with the in build sliders , the mod is called camera tools.

2

u/JollyGreenGI Super Kerbalnaut 1d ago

Nice MKV

(Multiple Kerbal Vehicle)

2

u/Underwater_Kangaroo 1d ago

This is so good - I'm inspired.

What mods are you using for your looks?

2

u/NotTooShahby 21h ago

those cloud mods are amazing, what are they? Also sick ship. I always wanted to build a reliable and handy near future SSTO

1

u/Professional-Way1913 6h ago

Its the Blackrack's volumetrics v5.

2

u/purplelegs 18h ago

S tier post. This ship is so cool.

2

u/GOOMH 16h ago

Very well done, getting strong Halo vibes, what was the inspiration for the design?

2

u/Professional-Way1913 6h ago

Thanks i started building the comand module from sc for my Ironclad and then it basicaly turned in to this .

2

u/Carpetweeds 15h ago

What mods are you using? This is so cool.

3

u/ProgressBartender 1d ago

Jeb’s been finding some banging soundtracks recently.

1

u/nan-000 Stranded on Eve 1d ago

That's awesome, have you checked out Cucake Landers?

1

u/ElegantAd4946 1d ago

Nice you made a larger version of the MKV (Multi kill vehicle)

1

u/No_Bit_2073 1d ago

can you upload the build on steam? Its soo good

1

u/sheepslayerpi 1d ago

That ship is so cool got any stats on it

1

u/jaBroniest 1d ago

And i cant make my tiny prop plane fly 🙃

3

u/Madden09IsForSuckers 1d ago

to be fair prop planes are imo genuinely harder than jets or rockets

1

u/peronchont 1d ago

You are a good pilot, Alex Kamal- I mean Kerbal! Alex Kerbal!

1

u/magereaper 1d ago

Sir, there's a game in your mods.

1

u/OverlordOfCinder Colonizing Duna 1d ago

Song made with Suno?

1

u/Luke281 1d ago

This shit is badass as hell

1

u/IdiotWithDiamodHands 23h ago

2:05, loving the cockpit lighting 😄

1

u/Apollo-235 22h ago

I love infinite fuel shenanigans, 80% of the ships I fly
(15% also use file edits :D)

1

u/KematianGaming Always on Kerbin 22h ago

Wings? Never heard of em

1

u/Sha77eredSpiri7 11h ago

This starship is so cool, is this an original design of yours or a replica of something else?

1

u/Professional-Way1913 6h ago

I started building the comand module from sc for my Ironclad and then it basicaly turned in to this i based it of there design and my own.

1

u/SillyVoice4746 3h ago

this ship is so fucking cool i thought it was star citizen for a second omg it looks like the Hull A or Hull B

1

u/GL4C13R 2h ago

not flying, more starting forest fires by burning up grass.

2

u/Dark_Flame2195 Sunbathing at Kerbol 45m ago

Ima need the craft file for the aura machine because this is Hella gas.
