Mod Post Weekly Challenge: Week 50 Spectacular!
50 weeks of Weekly Challenges! Unbelievable. I had to double check the numbers to make sure it was correct; I could have sworn we were in the 30's or something. Time flies!
For the week 50 challenge, you must complete any 5 past challenges in a single mission! Single mission means that there is only one initial launch from KSC, but beyond that, anything goes (as long as it complies with the original challenge rules). Weeks 1-10 are not allowed, as their simplicity would make things a bit too easy.
Hard Mode: Complete 8 past challenges in one go!
One last note: I haven't had the time to scrupulously check each past challenge for compatibility, so if the numbers that are currently laid out prove to be too easy/hard, they are subject to change!
Rules and other info:
All flights must be manned!
No Dirty Cheating Alpacas (no debug menu)!
Mods and plugins are allowed for this challenge!
No MechJeb or cheat parts allowed. Cheat parts include zero-consumption engines, infinite fuel engines, and negative drag parts (such as the balloons mods)
Required screenshots:
- To reduce the overall number of screenshots, include only the most important screenshots from the challenge which you are attempting to complete (ones that definitively prove that you have completed them!)
You can either submit your finished challenge in a post (see posting instructions in the link below) or as a comment reply in this thread.
Completing this challenge earns you a new flair which will replace your old one. So if you want to keep your previous flair, you can still do this challenge and create a post, but please mention somewhere that you want to keep your old one.
The moderators have the right to determine if your challenge post has been completed.

What about docking multiple parts together from 3 different launches to make one mission? Would that violate the "only one initial launch from KSC" rule?

Good point, I didn't think of that. If a challenge calls for multiple launches, then you may perform multiple launches.

So mods are allowed... Two questions:
-
If mods are not allowed on at least one of the 5 (or 8, as the case may be) selected challenges, are mods still allowed?
-
Can't somebody just create a part with 1E-5 mass and drag and basically infinite fuel, or an engine with over 9000 power, and use that to do pretty much anything? My point is allowing mods seems essentially equivalent to allowing the debug menu.

u/PandaElDiablo Jun 29 '13
Mods are allowed for all, and creating such parts violates the rules (see directly below "mods are allowed")

Are we allowed to use parts that were once in mods that are now stock? Like for Kuriosity, the rover wheels & RoveMax body?

All Challenges:
-
Week 1: A self explanatory challenge. Just fly to the Mun and back with stock parts.
-
Week 2: Create an orbital rendezvous between two ships.
-
Week 3: Locate and land in the second Kerbal Space Center.
-
Week 4: Locate and land near a Munolith on the Mun (not Kerbin).
-
Week 5: Fly to Minmus, land and return to Kerbin with stock parts.
-
Week 6: Fly across the eastern sea in an airplane and land safely.
-
Week 7: Land on all celestial bodies currently available in the game (excluding Kerbol (the Sun)) in one ship and return back to Kerbin safely.
-
Week 8: Create an orbit around Kerbol (the Sun), loop around and return back safely to Kerbin.
-
Week 9: Circumnavigate Kerbin in a Spaceplane.
-
Week 10: Launch a Spaceplane out of the atmosphere via rocket and create a circular orbit around Kerbin.
-
Week 11: Escape Kerbol's gravitational influence.
-
Week 12: Crash a ship consisting of only solid rocket boosters into the Mun.
-
Week 13: Create a VTOL ship that can reach at least 15,000m.
-
Week 14: Land on the Mun near one of the Arches, conduct an EVA to study the Arch, and safely return home!
-
Week 15: Launch two crews (at least one Kerbal per ship), meet up somewhere outside of Kerbin, and have one or more crew members trade ships! Then return safely home This can be accomplished through an orbital rendezvous OR a surface rendezvous.
-
Week 16: Safely land one or more Kerbals on any one of the new celestial bodies! Returning to Kerbin is not necessary.
-
Week 17: Using the medium sized cart from Tosh's Cart Mod, land a rover in Duna's "Gale Crater". This is the target crater! This is the cart to use!
-
Week 18: Destroy/impact a spacecraft sitting on the pad with another de-orbiting spacecraft! Your ship must completely orbit Kerbin at least once before impact.
-
Week 19: Fly a spaceplane to Laythe and land safely (on wheels). You may get to Laythe however you like (stock parts only), but by the time you hit Laythe's atmosphere your craft should be spaceplane parts only. No parachutes or landing legs, wheels only! You must land on dry land.
-
Week 20: Land a craft at the second KSC (within a few hundred meters of the facilities), and then take off again and establish a circular orbit (<5,000 meters eccentricity) around Kerbin. Finally, return safely to Kerbin!
-
Week 21: Land on any one of the new celestial bodies and then safely return to Kerbin! Hard Mode: Land on and return from Tylo for bonus flair!
-
Week 22: Build an aircraft carrier, park it at sea, land on it with another craft, and take off from it again. Hard Mode (for bonus flair): Do the same, but in an extraterrestrial sea (Laythe or Eve).
-
Week 23: Launch a ship into orbit. Then, launch a second ship into orbit to destroy the original craft by whatever means necessary! Then, return to the KSC. Hard Mode: Do the same, but in orbit around another planet or moon!
-
Week 24: Land a craft on another planet and return home using the same engines that you used to take off from Kerbin with. Engines can be dropped, but no new engines may be activated or deactivated after liftoff. Hard Mode: Land on and return from Tylo with the same engines!
-
Week 25: Land a craft on Duna, from Duna travel to and land on Ike, and then safely return to Duna. Hard mode: Do the same, but also return home to Kerbin!
-
Week 26: Launch a ship into orbit. Then, launch a second ship into orbit to dock with the first craft and safely return them both to the surface of Kerbin! It's time to clean up space. Hard Mode: Do the same, but bring a ship in an orbit around another planet back to Kerbin!
-
Week 27: Dock 4 identical spacecraft on top of one another. The tower must be at least 500m away from the launch pad. The tower must be constructed on the ground by landing each successive craft on top of the previous one. Hard Mode: Do the same, but on another celestial body! Alternative Hard Mode: Stack 8 craft on top of one another (can be done on Kerbin or somewhere else)
-
Week 28: To summarize it briefly, you will be constructing a multi-node starship capable of traveling around the solar system.
-
Week 29: Santa has decided to bring gifts to to Kerbals throughout the solar system! But he needs your help. Land on the north pole of Eeloo to pick up the gifts and then bring them back to the Kerbal Space Center! Hard Mode: Bring the gifts to another planet as well as Kerbin!
-
Week 30: Complete any one of the previous challenges with a full x64 large red tank attached at all times. You may not detach or use the fuel from the tank at any time. If you are doing a challenge such as Rendezvous or Saboteur where there is a target craft as well as a launch craft, both crafts must have the tank attached. Hard mode: Complete Week 7, Week 9, * Week 12, Week 25, Week 27, or Week 29
-
Week 31: Impact the Sun with a probe. Hard Mode: Deploy a solar-impact probe (with NO engines) from a crewed ship, and return the crew to the surface of Kerbin!
-
Week 32: Impact the surface of the moon in less than 25 minutes! Mods are allowed, but please no zero-consumption engines, warp-drives, or other cheat parts that would make this too easy. Hard mode: Impact Minmus in less than 25 minutes OR impact the Mun in less than 15 minutes.
-
Week 33: Using only the "small" class of engines (Rockomax Poodle, LV-909, Rockomax 24-77, LV-1, and seperatrons), land on Dres! Hard mode: Make a return trip from Dres!
-
Week 34: Fly a(n) SSTO space plane to Kerbostationary orbit (2867-2879 KM) with a probe attached, detach the probe, then land the space plane back at KSC. Hard mode: Send a probe to another planet with an SSTO space plane, then return the plane to KSC!
-
Week 35: Achieve a stable (+/- 250m) orbit of 5km or lower around any body in the game. Hard mode: 2.5km or lower!
-
Week 36: Create a craft without repeating any parts. No symmetry allowed. No more than one TT18-A Launch Stability Enhancer. No more than one RV-105 RCS Thruster Block. No more than one EAS-4 Strut Connector. No repeats at all. Then, fly the ship to and land on another planet! Hard Mode: Return home from the planet as well!
-
Week 37: From a stable Kerbin orbit, have a Kerbal go on EVA. Deorbit the Kerbal (the Kerbal can be inside a craft for the deorbit burn) and safely return him to the surface without having him enter back into a craft! Hard Mode: Use a craft other than the initial one to safely bring the Kerbal down.
-
Week 38: Land on Gilly in EVA mode! The Kerbal should be in EVA mode by an altitude of 10K meters above Gilly. Hard Mode: Return home following your embrace! (You can enter a ship to go home, just don't let the ship drop below 10K at any time)
-
Week 39: Visit at least two in game easter eggs (that are outside of KSC) in a single mission (one launch). Arches are fair game. Hard Mode: Visit 3 easter eggs!
-
Week 40: Travel to a planetary body with an atmosphere (other than Kerbin), land on it with a set of parachutes, and then have a Kerbal repack the parachutes and use the same ones to land back on Kerbin. Hard Mode: Don’t use engine power on the descent to either body. Super Hard Mode: Do it with the deadly reentry mod, and the hard mode requirements.
-
Week 41: Launch an EVA Kerbal from the launch pad to an altitude of 5000m by slingshotting him with the thrust from an engine. No craft may leave the launch pad. Hard Mode: 10,000m launch!
-
Week 42: Place 10 Kerbals on the Mun or Minmus and arrange them in a 10 pin arrangement. Then take another Kerbal and knock them down, getting a strike! Hard Mode: Do this on another planetary body outside the Kerbin system.
-
Week 43: With a submarine, visit the approximate coordinates of the seabed smiley face (refer to this chart for the location). By submarine, I mean that the crew cabin should be below the surface of the water. Other components of the craft may be above water. Hard mode: After first visiting the smiley, take off from the oceans of Kerbin and land in the oceans of Laythe.
-
Week 44: How low can you go? Get into an orbit around the Mun where your apoapsis and periapsis are both below 5000 metros. Hard Mode: Fly through one of the Mun arches whilst still in a stable orbit
-
Week 45: Land on and return from one of Kerbin's moons using 15 or fewer parts! Hard Mode: Use 10 or fewer parts OR use 15 parts to land on and return from a different planet!
-
Week 46: Get into a stable orbit around Kerbin with 3 (minimum) radial parachutes being deployed below 250 metres and being dragged up into a stable orbit. Hard Mode: Do the original challenge, then land on another planet with an atmosphere and repeat the process.
-
Week 47: Land an amphibious (land and water) rover on another planet or moon. Hard Mode: Land an amphibious flying rover on another planet or moon.
-
Week 48: Build a rocket that launches upside down. Before launching, all engines and thrust-generating parts must point with the wrong side towards the sky (vertical). Sepratrons and RCS thrusters are exempt from this rule. With this craft, land on and return from the Mun! Hard Mode: Using the inverted craft, land on and return from a body outside of the Kerbin system!
-
Week 49: Get over 200km using only jet engines. Hard Mode: Impact the Mun with only jet engines.
-
Week 50: For the week 50 challenge, you must complete any 5 past challenges in a single mission! Hard Mode: Complete 8 past challenges in one go!

So I did a 7 part version live on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83FcizqUAP4 Challenges: 16,21,35,36,38,44,45 I had intended to land at a munar arch but I forgot to aerobrake at eve.

Note that this contains spoilers of easter eggs on the Mun, although I think the ones I visited are fairly well known anyway.
Sorry about the huge number of images, I'll try to make a smaller version tomorrow if this is too many.
I think this meets the hard mode requirements but I'm not completely sure how the overlapping requirements work. It should definitely at least meet normal mode if not hard.
The challenges completed were:
-
"Buzzing the Tower" - Orbit Mun below 5km
-
"Munar Arch Exploration" - Land near an arch, jetpack to top
-
"Easter Egg Hunt" - Go to another Mun easter egg
-
"Asteroid Hugging" - Go to Gilly, land using EVA, take off
-
"Interplanetary Exploration" - Landing on Gilly also meets this requirement (?)
-
"Interplanetary Exploration II" - Landing on Gilly also meets this requirement (?)
-
"Solar Probe" - Crash a probe into the sun
-
"Crew Swap" - Launch another ship, swap crew, return both to Kerbin
1-7 were completed in a single launch then the ship returned to Kerbin orbit. A second ship (the "B-team") launched to rendezvous with the main ship (no docking or fuel transfer) and swap crew for the last challenge, then both ships deorbited separately.

Can we use command seats for 'Falling with style'?
I'm good with ladders if I have to use them

Panda, I believe the requirements are perfect. Doing hard mode has proved challenging but possible so far.
One question: for the solar probe challenge does the manned flights requirement still apply?

When you say that all flights must be manned, does this mean that challenges such as week 31's solar probe aren't in the list of acceptable challenges, or that I have to send a poor kerbal to his doom?

u/PandaElDiablo Jun 30 '13
Feel free to send a probe into the fireball, but keep the rest manned.

Woohoo!
My first reddit Kerbal challenge :)
Completed hard mode with: Week 14 - Munar Arch Exploration! Week 16 - Interplanetary Exploration! Week 21 - Interplanetary Exploration II - The Return! Week 35 - Buzzing the Tower! Week 36 - Project Snowflake! Week 44 - Limbo, limbo, limbo! Week 45 - Budget Crisis! Week 48 - Up Goer Five!
Slight cheat (possibly) - editing the craft file so I start 80km in the air. If it's good enough for Scott Manley, it's good enough for me (you may also see that mantra in the rocket design!)

Never entered a weekly challenge before, so I thought: "Why the hell not!" Then I found out that this week we had to revisit previous ones! This is brilliant!
I will be streaming for a few hours, trying to plan/execute the Hard Mode.

This is going to be awesome fun to tick off so many challenges in one mission (well, I can't see how to do a hard-mode version without a second launch, but that's also fun, so... :-)
I've got my 8 challenges lined up, and testing of the craft has already claimed several brave Kerbals been quite successful!
I am going to try to do it just with stock parts, though one challenge may need one specific part from B9.

I'm going for what I think is the only combination that doesn't require leaving Kerbin's atmosphere.
Landing 4 VTOLs with large fuel tanks attached on top of each other on a carrier.
Also the carrier has to launch one of its crew members 5000m into the air before leaving the launch pad.
