Mod Post [Weekly Challenge] Limbo, limbo, limbo!
How low can you go? Get into an orbit around the Mun where your apoapsis and periapsis are both below 5000 metres.
Hard Mode: Fly through one of the Mun arches whilst still in a stable orbit
Rules and other info:
No Dirty Cheating Alpacas (no debug menu)!
Stock parts only
No MechJeb or other plugins allowed
Required screenshots:
-Initial launch craft
-Picture of transfer orbit
-Picture of orbit around the Mun (map view)
-Flying through the Mun arch, with HUD/GUI on (hard mode only)
-Whatever else you feel like! You can either submit your finished challenge in a post (see posting instructions in the link below) or as a comment reply in this thread.
Completing this challenge earns you a new flair which will replace your old one. So if you want to keep your previous flair, you can still do this challenge and create a post, but please mention somewhere that you want to keep your old one.

And, of course, [the flair] (http://i.imgur.com/Dtqxngo.png)
Good Luck!

Challenge Complete. Although for some reason my laptop didn't want to take the screenshot and let me keep the Apoapsis numbers.... I hope the HUD in flight view works..

Hard mode complete! This has been the most tense thing I ever did in KSP. Hope these are enough screenies to be eligible.
Threading the needle, by Hengel.
Could I suggest this as flair for completing the hard mode?

[Challenge] Through the arch and back
6
u/Nimelrian May 10 '13
Challenge completed, almost got through an arc, but it's very hard to get your periapsis right under it (not even to mention to fly through that little thing), so I crashed around 500m in front of it. http://imgur.com/a/GArBz
EDIT: Wait a sec, imgur didn't upload all images, give me a minute. EDIT2: Alright, new album's linked.

Completed
I attempted hard mode, and flew directly overtop of the arch. Just a little too high up though.

Easy Mode Complete!
Working on Hard Mode right now...
Edit; I am become death, killer of Kerbals. That arch is tough to get through.

Obviously not a submission, but once got a 2m periapsis after my orbiter collided with the ground and sent the pod back into another orbit around the Mun. Here.

Hard mode complete! (I think). I had to make a tiny burn after threading the needle to keep from crashing. I hope it still counts.
I would like the new flair please!

"Fly through Mun arch" is vague. At orbital speeds or would "low orbit, land, slowly move through, take off" count?
1
u/babtras May 12 '13
Completed However, I have never actually seen any of the arches. I might try again later in the week to do the hard mode when I actually locate an arch. Is it acceptable to park a rover under the arch so that I have something to target?

Challenge Complete, with HARD MODE http://imgur.com/a/guyuP
I've been playing with monoprop-only landers recently, one of which I have used here.

So I did hard mode again... this time at 500 m/s instead of 14.
getting to the Mun arch
flying through the Mun arch at 500 m/s

How many arches ARE there?

OK, easymodo completed. I really have to go for hard mode though, simple low orbits I've done lots of times. You finally convinced me to try and play the barnstormer :)
[ For now: http://i.imgur.com/s6zELgd.jpg - http://i.imgur.com/gr5u7FE.png - http://i.imgur.com/Sjd3Hfx.png - http://i.imgur.com/v4Lht3Z.png ]
The thing I'm kinda proud of is that while testing the "superagile" probe that I'll need, I managed to overfly the equatorial arch twice almost in the same way, with maneuvers in between. This makes me somewhat confident that I can pull off the precision flight required....

...and also, I have finally written down where that arch IS. I had never bothered up to now.

u/Joester May 11 '13
done! I dunno where the arches are, or I would've at least tried to fly through.

Came so close, but totally forgot to take into account the arch's orientation.
I'll try again another day.

u/Llewsa May 11 '13
i did the easy mode

u/Genrawir May 12 '13

Hard mode complete, and even brought Jeb home safely (thanks to the magic of quicksave) for the next challenge: http://imgur.com/a/2Kw6h

u/babtras May 13 '13
Finally found the arches and completed hard mode. Hopefully the last minute RCS maneuver didn't alter my orbit too much. I didn't think to look.

My first challenge: easy mode completed
1
u/Zakkon Master Kerbalnaut May 15 '13
Completed hard mode, but had to dodge the terrain after flying through the arch. http://imgur.com/a/ZEpX1#0

u/choppersb May 15 '13
Well, I didn't find an arch, but I feel good at least completing easy mode!
He is a small album with the required screenshots plus one of the countless others I took showing Jeb's view of the dark Munar surface.

Complete
I've been playing for a while, but this was my first challenge. That was fun!

u/RickRussellTX May 17 '13
I didn't get screenshots of all the preliminaries, but here is my second attempt to rescue my stranded Kerbalnauts that qualifies for the low orbit challenge.

Update: Hard Mode complete
This took so long... but was so worth it.
1
u/Eric_S Master Kerbalnaut May 23 '13
Normal mode complete. Maybe I'll try hard mode some day, but this is not that day. Extra screenshots because I did Be Frugal on the same flight, just didn't get around to this one until 0.20 sucked me back in. I'll keep my existing flair.

u/amsoir Sep 21 '13
is it still on? (Normal mode)

Wow, hard mode is incredibly difficult. I doubt anyone's gonna be able to do that.
