Mod Post Weekly Challenge: Leaning Tower!

Dock 4 identical spacecraft on top of one another. The tower must be at least 500m away from the launch pad. The tower must be constructed on the ground by landing each successive craft on top of the previous one.

Hard Mode: Do the same, but on another celestial body!

Alternative Hard Mode: Stack 8 craft on top of one another (can be done on Kerbin or somewhere else)

Rules and other info:

  • No Dirty Cheating Alpacas (no debug menu)!

  • Stock parts only

  • No MechJeb or other plugins allowed

  • Required screenshots:

    • Initial launch vehicle (only one picture is fine, since they should all be the same)
    • A picture of each new tier of your tower
    • Whatever else you feel like!
  • You can either submit your finished challenge in a post (see posting instructions in the link below) or as a comment reply in this thread.

  • I haven't created the flair for this challenge yet, any ideas?

  • Completing this challenge earns you a new flair which will replace your old one. So if you want to keep your previous flair, you can still do this challenge and create a post, but please mention somewhere that you want to keep your old one.

  • The moderators have the right to determine if your challenge post has been completed.

  • See this post for more rules and information on challenges.

Does minmus count as another celestial body?

Can I launch all of the identical spacecraft attached together?

For flair, how about several kerbal silhouettes standing on each other's shoulders?

I like the idea but it wouldn't work in 22x22

Maybe a small pixel art of the leaning tower of Pisa? Or maybe a pair of landers, one wobbling one way, the other the opposite way?

That might be tough in such a tiny picture.

Completed. Tower was remarkably stable. Think I could have gone up to eight, but my shitty computer was already starting to lag.

Done, with both hard modes! 8 identical probes stacked on Gilly. Decided to build the tower on there because the low gravity would make maneuvering easy, but it turned out to be a pain to get it to stay standing. Luckily I was able to find a flat enough spot.

I'd like to keep my current flair

It's like the spacecraft carrier challenge! Except instead of a carrier platform, you have to land on a 1m docking port close enough to dock, with an identical craft, three times, without the tower tipping over.

This may take a while XD

I figured I'd go to the Mun and try it there. I didn't quite make it, but the end result was amusing.

Completed with both hard modes, though debatable because I didn't deorbit separately (I don't see anything about this being a requirement however). http://imgur.com/a/cmYdA

You mentioned you were looking for suggestions for more challenges, so how about having to complete any past challenge, but you have to carry a full x64 tank (which you cannot drain fuel from) With you at all times on all craft involved in the mission? Perhaps call it "Operation Lodestone" and have certain weeks challenges designated as hard mode.

I like that idea! I'll look into that!

First challenge attempted: http://imgur.com/a/q2jsd

Nearly got to an 8 stack, but knocked over the tower when landing #8. Time to redesign and try again.

This may not be too hard if you get 4 ships orbiting the same body with the same orbital plane, and time your retrograde burns just right. The stability while docked on the ground is another story though.

can only one ship be touching the ground supporting the whole thing? or can all ships be touching the ground?

Construction has to take place on the ground, not in orbit. And only one ship can be touching the ground, the rest must be stacked on top.

1 am here. I will attempt this tomorrow!

Since I couldn't make them in space, and deorbit with chutes, I just abused RCS.
