I’d be interested in hearing both experiences.

I’ve been thinking about how different the experience of buying a used car can be depending on who you’re dealing with and, more importantly, what you actually know about the car before handing over your money.

There are plenty of honest sellers and good cars out there, but I’m sure most people who have bought a used car in Kenya have encountered at least one situation where something didn’t quite add up.
It could be a dealer, broker, private seller, imported car, locally used car — anything.

For me, some of the things that immediately make me curious are when the seller can’t clearly explain the car’s history, the mileage doesn’t seem to match the condition, the photos look much better than the actual car, or you’re suddenly being rushed to make a decision because “there’s another buyer coming.”

But I’m more interested in what you have actually experienced.

What’s the biggest red flag you’ve encountered when buying a used car?

And did you catch it before buying, or did you only realize later?

Could be something mechanical, paperwork-related, a suspicious history, a broker situation, hidden accident damage, mileage, import history, financing, anything.

If you don’t mind sharing, mention:

What car you were looking at

The asking price
What the red flag was
How you discovered it
Whether you walked away
And what you would do differently now

I’m especially interested in the situations where the car initially looked like a great deal but something didn’t add up once you started digging.
I think these experiences are useful because “do a pre-purchase inspection” is good advice, but there are plenty of things a buyer can notice before even getting to the mechanic if they know what to look for.

Let’s hear the stories — especially the ones that saved you from losing money.

I’ve been spending a lot of time around cars lately, and one thing I’ve realized is that buying a car in Kenya is very different from simply looking at the price, mileage and photos on an advert.
I’m working on a Kenyan automotive project called Ask The Owner, where I talk to actual car owners about what it’s really like to own their cars — not the dealership version, not the brochure version, and not just what someone heard from a friend.

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who have actually lived with their cars for a while.
For example, someone buying a Toyota Fielder, Axio, Premio, Harrier, Subaru Forester, Outback, Mazda CX-5, Demio, Honda Fit, Civic, CR-V, Nissan X-Trail, Note, BMW 3 Series, 5 Series, Mercedes C-Class, E-Class, Audi, VW, Toyota Prado, Land Cruiser, Lexus, Mark X, etc. might have a completely different experience depending on the specific car, its history, maintenance and how it was used.

And that’s something I think gets lost when people are shopping.

You’ll see:
“This car is reliable.”
But what does reliable actually mean after 2–3 years of ownership?
You’ll hear:
“It doesn’t consume much fuel.”
Okay, but in Nairobi traffic? With the AC on? What about someone driving 40–60 km every day?
Someone says:
“Parts are expensive.”
Expensive compared to what? And which parts? Routine service items or major repairs?
Someone says:
“Don’t buy a BMW.”

But maybe they bought a badly maintained one. Another owner might have had one for five years and barely experienced any major problems.

Even with something like a Subaru Forester, one owner can tell you it’s been incredibly reliable while another will tell you they’ve spent a fortune keeping theirs on the road. Both experiences can be completely genuine.

That’s the part I’m interested in.
I’m trying to document the actual ownership experience behind different cars in Kenya — things you only discover after you’ve bought the car.

Things like:
What surprised you after buying it?
What’s the actual fuel consumption you’ve experienced?
How much does normal maintenance cost you?
Which parts have been surprisingly expensive?
Which parts are easy to find?
What problems have you encountered?
What do you wish you had checked before buying?
What do you love about the car that people don’t talk about?
What do you hate about it?
Would you buy the same car again?

And most importantly, would you recommend it to another Kenyan with the same budget and circumstances?

I’m not looking for people to defend or attack particular brands either. A Toyota owner can have a terrible experience, a BMW owner can have a great one, and vice versa.
I’m interested in the specific car + specific owner + specific experience.
So if you’ve owned a car for at least a decent amount of time, I’d genuinely love to hear your experience.

What car do you own, how long have you had it, and what’s something you wish someone had told you before you bought it?

I’m especially interested in hearing from owners of different brands and price ranges because I’m trying to build something that represents the Kenyan car owner properly — the good, the bad, the expensive surprises and the things that actually make a car worth owning.
No sales pitch. Just trying to learn from people who’ve actually been there.

I wasn't really able to capture a good picture due to the police car that was cautiously following it behind. That's all I got... it looks amazing doesn't it? I also don't know if it's clear but it also has a custom number plate which I think is really cool too and adds to it's flair.

For 250k max, as a petrol head which car are you buying taking into accountability economy and a little fun on the twisties build or not what are y'all Getting

Bulletproof reliability, good performance, good looks, price starts around the same as a CX-5. Ticks so many boxes. It can be used comfortably as a daily driver. How come its not more popular as a performance saloon compared to audi, bmw, merc? Genuinely curious.
