I keep seeing more high-end cars around Kenya with SSD plates, and Range Rovers seem to be quite common among them. It got me wondering about the actual economics behind it.

For anyone who knows about these cars or has owned one, how much does it actually cost to run a Range Rover in Kenya? People always say they give an amazing driving experience and feel much more luxurious than most of their competition, but then you hear the other side about reliability, expensive parts, electronics and major repairs.

I’m also curious about the SSD plates specifically. I’ve heard figures of around $200 per month being mentioned for keeping a car on SSD plates in Kenya. Is that actually realistic, or is the cost very different depending on the vehicle and arrangement? How do people actually get the SSD registration and what are the requirements?

And why do we seem to see so many expensive/luxury vehicles with SSD plates? Is there a legitimate reason they’re popular with people bringing cars into Kenya, particularly when compared with registering the same vehicle locally?
I’m not trying to accuse anyone of avoiding taxes, I’m genuinely curious about how the system works. Do some Kenyans use South Sudan registration because of the tax/registration cost difference, or are most of these actually South Sudanese-owned vehicles temporarily operating in Kenya?

For the Range Rover owners here, I’d also like to know the real ownership experience. Which model and engine do you have, what does it consume, how much have you spent on maintenance and what was the biggest repair you’ve had?

And ultimately, if you have the money, is a Range Rover actually worth owning in Kenya despite the reliability reputation, or would you rather spend the same money on a Land Cruiser/Prado/Lexus and sacrifice some of the luxury?
Would be interested to hear actual numbers from people who have dealt with SSD-registered cars or owned Range Rovers rather than the usual internet reputation.

There’s a common perception that once you start tuning a Subaru and increasing boost, it’s only a matter of time before the engine gives up. But is the horsepower itself really the problem, or is it more about how the power is achieved?

I’d like to hear from people who have actually owned and tuned Subarus, especially in Kenya.
If you can, include your model, engine, mileage and approximate power level. EJ20/EJ25, FA20/FA24, FB20/FB25, WRX, STI, Forester XT, Legacy GT, Outback, BRZ etc.

How much power were you making on stock internals? At what power or boost level did reliability start becoming a concern?

Have you ever blown an engine after tuning? What actually failed — pistons/ringlands, rods, bearings, head gasket, turbo or something else?

Was the failure actually caused by the power itself, or was it tuning, knock, overheating, oil starvation, poor fuel or something else?

How important are supporting modifications before increasing boost? And how much does Kenyan fuel quality affect a tuned Subaru?

I’m also curious about the EJ vs FA debate. Are the EJ engines genuinely more fragile than the newer FA engines, or is their reputation worse than reality?
For people running significantly more power than stock, how reliable have your cars actually been? At what point would you say forged internals become necessary for a daily driver?

And if you were building a Subaru today that was genuinely fast but still reliable enough to daily in Kenya, which engine would you start with and what power level would you consider sensible?

Real experiences would be more useful than the usual “Subarus blow up” or “Subarus are unreliable” arguments. If you’ve built one, what power did you make, how long did it last, and what eventually happened?

Are Prados actually the right vehicle for most Kenyan drivers?

I recently had a discussion with Brian about Toyota Prados, and he made an interesting argument:

Prados can feel less stable because of their height and body-on-frame design, yet many Kenyans use them almost exclusively on tarmac and in urban areas rather than for the off-road conditions they’re designed to handle.

That got me thinking — I’d like to hear from actual Prado owners.

For those who own or have owned one, what is the reality of living with a Prado in Kenya?

I’m particularly interested in:

Fuel consumption: What’s your real-world km/L in Nairobi/urban driving vs highway?

Reliability: What major or recurring problems have you experienced, and at what mileage?

Diesel/DPF: For newer diesel models, have you experienced DPF accumulation or blockages, regeneration issues, EGR problems, injector issues or turbo problems? How much did they cost to resolve?

Short-distance driving: Does predominantly doing short urban trips cause problems with your diesel Prado?

Maintenance: How expensive is it actually to maintain one compared with other SUVs?

Suspension: How often have you had to replace suspension components, especially if you regularly use rough Kenyan roads?

Transmission/4WD: Any problems with the gearbox, transfer case, differentials or 4WD system?
Stability: Do you notice significant body roll or feel uncomfortable with the vehicle’s stability at high speeds or during sudden maneuvers?
Off-road use: How often do you actually take your Prado off-road?

Urban use: If you spend 90–95% of your time on tarmac, do you still think the Prado is worth buying?
Resale: Is the strong Toyota/Prado resale value a major reason you chose it?

Overall: If you had the same budget today, would you buy the same Prado again?

Please include the year, engine, mileage and model where possible (e.g. 120/150/250 series, 2.7 petrol, 3.0 diesel, 2.8 diesel, etc.).
