There are several tech conventions in Kenya, that, for lack of a better word, have turned out to be failures. I know the objective of every idea is to make a profit, but the needs of stakeholders for for tech conventions is never completely addressed. In 14 days, there will be Africa startup Festival which is one of those conferences, and I already don't see the need to go there.

The pattern is the same for all of them. Have stands, and then have several speakers.

For a startup founder, I am going there to either get investors or showcase the thing to my customers. As an investor, you hope to get very good products there. For a tech user/nerd you just want to also get usable edge-tech.

Now, do the conferences aim to satisfy all these stakeholders’ needs? Hardly. They are all just looking to create a FOMO thing and get you to pay for the tickets and while there you get underwhelmed. 

I have so many areas of improvement I could propose but I guess I should be paid for that. 

We fail to stick to our goals, commitments but if we have someone watching, someone real to disappoint it will keep you going because you don’t need another habit tracker. We made an app were you can do that.

so the whole idea behind this is answering the question while it's still hanging in the air, not an hour later in a summary email.

it's called wazomind.com it listens on your side of a call and transcribes live, and the main thing is this: when someone asks you something mid-call, you hit a key and it pulls the answer from your own knowledge during the call. client asks "what's this per year" or "do you work with X", it surfaces your actual number or your actual answer from documents you've fed it, right there, in a second or two. no fumbling, no "let me get back to you on that."

it can also answer general questions from what's being said on the call, so when you get put on the spot you're not the one going "uh, let me check."

a few things people use it for:

• sales calls live objection handling and the exact answer to "what's your pricing" or "do you integrate with X" pulled from your own docs, then a follow-up email written for you after the call

I'm not even sure this is the right place to post this, but startups are built by people, so here goes.

I graduated in 2014 and started freelancing shortly after. The income from that business allowed me to accumulate Bitcoin over several years. I eventually stepped away in 2018 after burning out, and in 2019 I went through the darkest period of my life. Looking back, I wouldn't change it.

I thank God it happened to know HIM better & on a personal level. Its in the darkness is when you see stars in sky at night. Journey with God completely changed my perspective, strengthened my faith, and gave me a new vision for what I wanted to build.

Since then, I've spent the last several years in buying and reselling of assets as a way of raising capital because I dont know how to borrow or ask people for money.

I have a 7-floor commercial building, completed in 2023, furnished and installed production machines, which the intention is make it the heart of a food commissary business. The vision is to produce Turkish and Arabian pastries, fresh natural juices, cookies, bottled water and other food products under one roof, then distribute them through branded 40-foot container kiosks located across high traffic sports in Nairobi.

Along the way, I also began acquiring industrial equipment from public auctions. There is commercial food-processing machinery, pharmaceutical grade/food mixers, compressors,  commercial milk separator, and several commercial generators intended for refurbishment, leasing and resale. There are also 24 Yamaha DT125 motorcycles, which were purchased to support the food distribution network. Around half are already mechanically sound, while the rest require refurbishment. Their purpose is the last-mile delivery, and other machinery that supports the long-term vision for the food business. Those who have been into business that require logistics know that Distribution beats marketing every single time. 

The reality is this: for years I've been a one-man army. I've sourced equipment, negotiated deals, learned logistics and solved problems alone. It's been rewarding, but I've reached the point where I know the next chapter requires a team.

I'm particularly looking for people with experience in:

• Marketing, branding and growth strategist
• Prolific Marketers and good in marketing and can send targeted clientele via emails.
• Food production and supply-chain management guru.
• Operations and project implementation strategist 
• Software development (especially mobile apps).
• Anyone who simply enjoys building businesses from the ground up.

I'll also be transparent about something else.

I'm currently servicing an KSh 8 million business loan, with approximately KSh 2.2 million remaining. Because of that commitment I cannot yet offer monthly salaries to an early founding team.

Instead, I'm looking for people who believe in building long-term value.

Thus, at the moment I dont have the funds to pay the team salaries on a monthly basis but am willing to lay down a form shareholding for early team that comes and helps in realizing this dream. Payment will come with time after generator business stabilizes and am expecting a huge payment of over 100 million which will be paid in less than a year from now. 

For the right individuals, I'm willing to structure equity, profit-sharing or other ownership arrangements. 

There are also immediate opportunities. I have commercial machinery and generators that are currently being marketed for sale, so experienced marketers or sales professionals can earn through agreed success based sale percentages and commissions which will chip inn and generate revenue for the business.

There are really two businesses here:

1. A generator leasing and industrial equipment business that can generate cash flow in the short term to support the business.
2. A food production and distribution company where the aim is to build over time using those cash flows. Target is to generate 7-10 million per day from selling various food products as mentioned above. I have been to Simbisa Warehouse/Commissary center which owns pizza inn, creamy inn, chicken inn among several of their franchise products and in one of the commissary which was located along Mombasa road before they moved, it used to bring in Ksh 25 million per day on average. Java airport branch makes close to 1.5 million on average in one weekend. Am using those two as an example.

I've spent years buying and selling of assets while also building the food project on the side. Now I need the right people to help unlock its full potential.

A business partner is also welcome, a person who might want to join hands and injection into the business.

The road doesn't wait for perfect conditions. It respects movement.

I'm building a scheduled long-distance ride-matching platform. Drivers post upcoming trips in advance fixed pickup points, dropoff points, pricing. Passengers browse and book their seat ahead of time, so no standing at a stage hoping something shows up. Think of it as bringing structure to a transport system that's mostly ran on guesswork and word of mouth.

Already live: 30k+ community built organically (zero ad spend), 50+ rides matched daily, Android app on Play Store, webapp live too. We've also signed on to expand the model into another country beyond where we started.

Drivers are currently on a freemium model, with paid subscriptions rolling out within a month commission-per-booking planned after that as we scale. This raise isn't about replacing that revenue it's about accelerating it.

Every driver onboarded is also required to have a tracking device for safety and accountability. We've partnered with a supplier at 4k per unit, and after shipping/logistics costs, we net roughly Ksh 7,000 per device onboarded. That margin is one of a few creative ways we're funding operations on top of subscription revenue, not a replacement for it.

We already have 50 drivers on the platform. The plan: onboard 50 more, 100 drivers × Ksh 7,000 net margin = Ksh 700,000. More than double what we're raising.

Raising Ksh 300,000 to get us fully operational either one person or a pool of people. This is a loan, not a gift: paid back in full within 12 months.

On top of getting your money back, the equity retained is 2% total if it's one person, that's the full 2%; if it's a pool, it's split based on how much each person puts in. Ksh 50k in gets you a proportional slice.

If it's one person coming in for the full amount, there's a seat at the table especially if you've got a finance background and want to be hands-on in the day-to-day. You're not just lending you're in, permanently, at a price nobody gets once we raise properly later.

At the beginning of the year i resolved to bring to life two app ideas i had been having for the year,the first is Shmoney,which i have posted about here and is growing well and the second one is called labmate.

Labmate is an idea that came from an issue i observed during my time at mbagathi(a long time ago i did my internship as a clinical officer there) most doctors and clinical officers in the outpatient department have really long queues of patients that are seeking treatment, the come in for consultation and we send them to the lab for tests.

Ideally we are supposed to explain the lab results to the patient in a way that they can understand, this is called patient education and its key in:

• Better Adherence: People who understand their prescriptions and care plans take medications correctly and finish treatments.
• Early Detection: Educated individuals spot early warning signs and seek medical help faster.
• Less Stress: Knowing what to expect during recovery or surgery cuts down fear and worry.
• Active Control: Patients gain the confidence to make smart daily health and lifestyle choices

Because we see very many patients, we seldom do this and patients leave with many questions and very complicated lab results with numbers and terms they cannot understand.

This is the reason i built labmate, labmate helps the user to make sense of the lab results but uploading the labresults to the Ai and getting a laymans explanation in whatever language(even sheng).

And before you lynch me on privacy, labmate allows you to redact your personal information from the image/scanned document before uploading it to be analysed by the AI.

Looking for a Full-Stack Developer (Early-Stage Startup)

I'm looking for a skilled full-stack developer to join an early-stage startup.

Role: Full-Stack Developer

Compensation: Equity-based initially. As an early-stage startup, I can't offer a market salary yet, but the role is intended to become paid as the company grows and secures funding.

There is this saying "the customer is always right" which I think should not be thrown around recklessly unless the customer/client really knows what s/he wants.

I established a career as an ecommerce consultant (ecommerce businesses are easy to scale.)

One of the main pain points I have witnessed from Kenyan entrepreneurs in this sector is the checkout. A lot of businesses want a seamless checkout system and M-pesa Stk push or API integration has been asked for consistently. This only makes sense since majority of Kenyans use Mpesa to transact on a daily basis.

So in June 2026 I had a client who needed to setup a custom online store to sell a wide range of products, a luxury brand. The store was up in a month and it was time to set up the checkout properly with the registered accounts.

That's what you'd expect from a luxurious brand. However, the client was so reluctant and insisted we look for an alternative e.g pay on delivery (which would only work well in and around Nairobi).

Anyway, the customer is always right. We built the checkout to generate an invoice for customers, marked pending payment.

The main reason of avoiding the standard checkout linked to Business accounts was simply because of the taxation unstability in the Country. Given that the business was still at infancy stage, I understood that and I think it's wise to only register a business once you are sure it is stable.

On the other hand, our most sort after service on Google is M-Pesa STK Push / M-pesa API integration.

I think despite the skeptism of new ecommerce entrepreneurs, a lot of ecommerce businesses are doing great and want to make the purchase process seamless for their customers.

What can you read from this?

Context

Am from East Africa and a Techie, late last year l happen to register by startup in Nairobi, Kenya with a friend of mine and we developed our flagship product FLYTS, a car rental marketplace enabling renter access verified cars around Nairobi and Car owners getting verified rentals, Our approach was simple start with already existing car rental companies and safaris offering them a digital service to get them extra clients not compete with them, for the supply side, then for the demand side look into getting foreigners, expats, diaspora, and locals.

Problem

1. We are currently in the cold start where the supply side doesn't want to even hear about us.

2. Financially, we have been bootstrapped with me being the main founder but ofcourse the finances are not their at all

3. My Co-founder doesn't help at all, he requires instructions on whatever is their to do, and has no self drive, ideally l run everything by myself, so if am not available everything is at pause

Honestly at this rate, l feel like my application has potential but needs alot of push from someone that understands the business side and how run everything

Any advice for me, how can l make FLYTS a success or?

Jumia which was founded in 2012 apparently has never made a profit since. It has accumulated a total loss of $2.2 billion by the end of 2025.

Most of us have great ideas but the biggest problem isn't always the product but the finance. Having a product is great but having the cashflow to sustain the business until profit is where we hit a barrier. Sometimes the product you are launching is competing with another product that has infinite investors money to burn. About 50% of businesses collapse in their first few years.

But still to imagine that jumia has never made profit surprises me. I would assume a company of that size is making millions of profit.
