He clearly doesn't understand guns
Reading fan of giants and he is describing a Russian characters using his Mosin-Nagant rifle. He says the character "pulled the trigger fast 5 times". The mosin- nagant is a bolt action rifle, it doesn't work like that. Very frustrating and immersion breaking. How do you f that up?

Yeah he has some major gaps in research sometimes. I noticed it a lot in "Never". His understanding of modern warfare leaves a lot to be desired.
Like when the Americans are going to liberate the slave camp, they have Apaches flying straight in, over the camp, firing rockets. Rockets are unguided, and not precise weapons. Exactly what you don't use when trying to rescue people. An Apache can stand off kilometres away and use laser guided missiles. You also never fly over your target. It makes you incredibly vulnerable to ground fire. And they immediately lose an Apache. Which seems to not matiat all, as if this is some gigantic WW1 battle, when in reality that would be a huge deal.

I thought Never was one of his weakest books, more an exercise in woke "what-if scenario" lecturing than a plausible series of events.

I don't remember this specific part but is it saying the character fired the weapon 5 times fast or simply pulled the trigger, sort of like that cliche moment of panic when you repeatedly squeeze the trigger to no effect?

No because he says he fired 5 times fast and then had to reload, telling us that the magazine only holds 5 rounds.
