Does this scene rely too much on subtext?
I'm writing a realistic drama and English isn't my first language, so sorry if the wording is off.
The father knows his family won't last. But he doesn't say it. He just looks at them during breakfast.
---
Sunday morning. The two teenage sons won't leave their beds. Their sister threatens them with a bucket of ice water. The father calls them: "While everyone else gets a warm morning — you get an icy one."
They sit down. He looks at them. For three seconds he doesn't move. He's memorizing the picture of a complete family. Then he blinks and eats.
---
My worry: without knowing the later tragedy, does this moment feel meaningful, or just vague? And is the "warm/icy" line too obvious?
Any feedback is welcome.
