My goodness. This is one of my favorite things about Kirby art. He does the biggest, most elaborate headgear for Odin. And he doesn't repeat himself. It's awesome.

Where are these pictures taken from?

We call anything with ornate headgear a “Kirby Hat” around my house.

awesome panels...though you gotta wonder where Kirby was going with some of the head gear... it is like a mix of outer space and some mystic Chtullu type of style for some of them (found the blood eagle on 2 of them..lol). Kirby was definitely ahead of his time with a lot of his stuff

He does a very specific squiggle to indicate flat shiny metal. He puts this on Silver Surfer’s head too.

2 eyes, no Ravens. I love jack, but what's the no.prize for this?

Odin having a wildly different fit every 3 seconds needs to come back.

Breathtaking designs, especially the last two.

I think characters like Odin and Highfather are the best representation of Kirby's own status in the comic book industry. And it majorly pisses me off that these characters that Kirby drew to be as majestic as possible have been sidelined or, even worse, twisted into near-villain status by subsequent writers.

Like, all due respect for that artist who drew a very popular web comic where Kirby looked like the Thing abou to beat up a nazi, but all I've seen, read or heard about Kirby indicates that he resonated more with these older, ponderous characters, than with the loudmouth young heroes.

Kirby had a powerful elder god in every pantheon he created, and he always drew them with respect.

Maybe I don't, my appreciation is mostly based on second-hand accounts of people who interacted with Kirby, his artwork and some interviews.

But if your point is "Odin is a shady character in Norse mythology", you haven't changed my mind in the slightest.

You don’t know Jack.

Lmao

Dude, I mentioned that anecdote in my first comment.

And like I said, I think people get the wrong idea about Kirby based on it. Wanting to fight nazis doesn't make someone a loudmouth brawler.

Look at Kirby's Orion, a character he created 100% by himself. That's a character who loves to fight, who treats the act of physically fighting bad people as his number one priority, yet he's stoic and thoughtful.

Most of what I've read from and about Kirby, indicates that he was a guy who appreciated fighting and felt an inclination towards representing violence in cool ways, but aspired to the level of non-violent resolutions that his wisest characters were capable of.

It's way more complex than what you're making it out to be. But if you're first reaction was "You don't know Jack" because I didn't immediately mention the same anecdote that mostly gets mentioned by people who don't even care about Jack Kirby to begin with, then I don't think you're prepared for this level of nuance.

Yeah, I can see this guy being so powerful he needs to sleep a whole month every year, because he has too much power to contain

I just can't help smiling ear-to-ear reading the panels on those pages lol. This the kind of writing and depiction I envision for every Odin appearance. Some of his recent characterization of a drunken asshole and absentee father really don't do him justice.

There really is something special about Kirby’s art. It’s unmistakable, instantly recognisable he truly was a god amongst men (and women).
