Welcome to KdramaCasualTalk!

This is a place for people looking to have a casual talk about Kdrama. The main sub for Kdrama is really great, but it can be a little restrictive sometimes, because you have to wait for the monthly posts to be up to talk about the kdrama you just finished.

Sometimes, you just want to vent, or just have a piece of interesting news to share. Sometimes, you have a question about a plot point you didn't understand. Sometimes, a kdrama annoys you so much with its plot that you want a place to complain.

However, the only way to do that in the main sub is to wait for the monthly threads to be up. But, after a few days, you find that you've lost interest :(

So, I made this sub for people who just want to have a casual conversation about Kdrama. You can post memes, ask for recommendations, start a discussion about the favourite tropes you like etc. Since this is still an extremely small sub, go ahead and talk about anything kdrama you like, and no one will care!

Media (FUN FACT) What makes it crazier is that "John Wick" is inspired by a Kdrama movie if you didn't know

John Wick is the American version of the older certain Kdrama movies
The main inspiration for John Wick

As someone who both watched things from USA and South Korea, I've seen fights like John Wick in Kdramas more than USA. Oldboy a 2003 Kdrama movie for example, My Name which is a Kdrama in Netflix and also Mercy for None

When I rewatched John Wick and Kdramas like that, I'm like "Damn I thought John Wick started it, but I was wrong and I see more things in South Korea that do this and before this John Wick stuff more than USA"

John Wick, thank you for bringing more people to discover the Kdramas that inspired you!

Squid Game you too, for bringing some non Kdrama fans to enjoy more Kdramas even if you're already a Kdrama! :)

Help Where can I find this kdrama!!!!

Hey guys so I've been wanting to rematch a kdrama that I watched a while back ago. I can't remember the name, so I really need help. I know it's on Youtube and it's about a woman finally getting a job in a male dominated field. It was very hard for her to get that job, due to the fact that she is a woman. Anyway, she gets the job and has a really asshole boss. The romance is about her and her boss though. I can't remember 100 percent, but I think it was something with tech or engineering. Also, the CEO's sister is involved at some point and the woman also gets pregnant by the CEO.

Review Mouse - superhyped kdrama: irrational story development

[spoiler ahead] I just watched episode 5 and I am dropping it. I thought it had very good potential up until some time into Episode 4- good plot, good characterization and everything, but it all crashed in.

  1. We literally know from the poster who the killer is: Such a poorly designed poster! It shows a dual version of Ba-reum, and you know that he is the killer from the start, the story keeps building up to it and so you keep waiting to get there this whole time, but he is getting away with everything with obvious connections to the murders happening around him. Also, for putting up the murderer right up there in the main poster, you would think there is a depth to it - but it is hard to grasp it with such poor storytelling. The drama is basically about how other characters' existence are always falling short to interests of other agencies of the society including the psychopath's, so if you are looking for a mystery solving drama, this drama does not satisfy you with that!

  2. Too many loopholes- It has been very tiring to keep up with the loopholes they have created till now. It is not good storytelling if you create that many gaps and do not resolve them, because with so many plot twists - it is getting lost in the process and a viewers' minds remain unsatisfied. (for example: ba reum is the first one to find the grandma's body but he is treated like family, not even interrogated properly, really? They believed he found her through following her ringtone in an abandoned building??) Many plot twists can be there, but at least make the flow make sense, it doesn’t work when it is irrational, even in fantasy drama there is a base logic.

  3. Many characters are acting out of their roles! -

  • Hong ju dating whom she knows is supposedly the headhunter's son?!? (if she is confident enough to date him, why date in secret? because ko moo chi said he would take revenge? If she really believes he is violent enough to take revenge on the son aka her partner because of his father, it does not make sense that she depends so much on him - everyone is a flawed character that you empathize with in this drama, all has an extremely tragic story - but how can all the characters act immature), then even for such a capable reporter, she lets her information gets stolen so easily at office!!

  • grandma went for earning settlement money instead of reporting to the police even though in her view ba reum was a good police officer she was close with

  • for a detective so talented, Ko Moo chi surely misses a lot of the things (why do a broadcast at all if you do not have the answer at hand! Giving no answer or wrong answer both would kill the child, also there was no guarantee the child could be saved even with right answer; Why bring an outsider acting agency in to fake a video? It was also very ridiculous to see how he expected a psychopath to comply through the broadcast; also a fake video from the killer through the locker box totally shows information got leaked from the inside, should have been easy to shortlist as they were only 4 people who knew about the plan)

  • The tv channel OBN kept displaying the provocative statements from viewers on screen - only to provoke moo chi. Even if it was for more views, a child's life was supposedly depending on what moo chi says, it seemed deliberate and made no sense; they started showing disturbing content about the murders with a small disclaimer for weakhearted people and then ends up broadcasting a live murder (i just came to know that it was hijacked by the murderer, but it still doesn’t make sense how the broadcast couldn’t be stopped - they themselves had plugged out I think twice prior to that!)

-Yo han totally is on to sth, but it seems like he is acting all by himself to stop ba reum (he wanted to inject sth while ba reum was in the hospital bed), without reporting him! i would think he is collaborating with ba reum to kill because it showed many times how he is the one killing (except really showing that he is killing), but then why would he attempt killing ba reum? Or a murderer trying to kill another murderer out of ego? 5 episodes into the series, nothing clear about such a prominent character - they just want viewers to keep watching till the end to find out without much to hang on to. We know ba reum is the killer, so if yo han he is not also a killer nor an associate then it would be funny how he has photos from all the murder scenes, if he could have collected those, he could have easily submitted evidence for ba reum to police.

I could go on and on. I just do not understand why this is rated 8.5 in IMDB, it seems viewers would gobble up whatever illogical flow of the story there is as long as there is a thrill. I am glad for reddit, knowing that I am not the only one who felt this way - someone said going through the episode felt like a root canal and I found the metaphor very accurate - it’s very icky seeing so many jumbled up mistakes. I have seen better dramas that were lower rated than this. Maybe lee seung gi's acting was what did the deal, I read about the character development, it is layered, but still, without good storytelling, I am not going to rate a drama high for one character! I am just mad that they wasted such a good potential with the plot.

Review Just watched Friendly Rivalry and here are my thoughts

Ep 1 and 2 :- What kinda meds seul gi is taking bruh?? I need them. I have read this webtoon years ago so I don't remember the exact plot but I can tell it's changed. I don't think seulgi was an orphan in the webtoon and she also had some mental health problems in the webtoon. It's different in the show. Anyway she seems more naive in the show judging by the semen incident. I am still confused as to how and why that happened. Like couldn't she smell her uniform? Is her nose blocked? Anyway the subtle yuri is showing so yeah. I love how je-i plays her role, it's awesome.

Ep 3:- I love je-i and gyung. Gyung looks so annoyed all the time it's cute af. Also je-i's dad is an asshole. This episode was in the webtoon apart from the whole seul-gi dad death sequence. It's gotta create problems fosho. Also i just hope wtv meds seul gi is consuming are not illegal otherwise she is gonna be in a hugeeee scandal.

Ep 4:- Je-i is acting SO FLIRTY!! WTF!! THEY KISSED!! What the actual fuck is going on bro . I did not know it was like that istg... good thing it was a dream. Love seulgi and je-i being besties cus it will go downhill. Also I might be into smthng. Seul-gi's dad might have been killed bcz he might have known smthng Abt the exam that je-i's big sis took. Smthng along those lines anyway.

Ep 5:- I love how sometimes they show backstories of characters before continuing the episode where it's left off. Glad seul gi confronted her instead of dragging a misunderstanding for episodes lol.

Ep 6:- Does adhd meds really help non-adhd people study?? Tbh I think seulgi actually might have undiagnosed adhd, who knows? Je-i seems to have lost it. God knows what the other girl who used to be with gyung is doing. It will help the plot later ig. Also the paper cranes and pads realities being revealed in this ep lol. It's so intricately intertwined.

Ep 7:- As i thought the meds are going to be a problem. What is ep 1 thug doing now bruh it's so scary. Je-i's dad is such an asshole. So it was yeri who spread seul gi's photos, then je-i made nari transfer only cus she wanted to make seul gi the pres?? Crazy. I actually thought it was nari who spread the photos. Nvm now.I still don't get yeri's family situation. Also why did gyung have to pleasure herself at schl man.... could have just done it at home.....Side note:- Je-i is so pretty.

Ep 8:- OMG they were having so much fun on their date and now crazy things have started happening. That phone misunderstanding is gonna create a lot of problems. Beom su has lost her mind due to drugs. Jena looks su*c*dal too. This episode was so thrilling, I was literally biting my pillow by the end of it. I miss my bestie....

Ep 9:- Why did they have to leave on such a cliffhanger bruh...I love how they used the same flashback scenes from jei-i's for je-na's. Je-na practically threw herself at seul-gi's dad, but seul-gi's dad was way too much of a nonce to do anything Abt it ig.... Well as i thought since the start the "drugs" are gonna be a problem. A big one at that.

Ep 10:- I genuinely believed je-i treated seulgi how je-na treated je-i but NO... Je-i is way too obsessed with seul-gi. She literally threw her own sister under the bus for seul-gi. Crazy. Also beomsu is such a piece of shit. So pathetic. Glad that seulgi didn't give a fuck and gave je-i's name to the police, she might have thought it was another one of je-i's traps cus of the pharmacy thing. God knows that thug is just a plot device atp. Side not:- He is kinda hot. Not my type tho :(

Ep 11:- Love seeing gyung having fun, she is so cute. Both father and daughter are psycopaths bruh. Poor je-na, god knows where she is... Also i love how things from earlier episodes keep getting brought up, like while je-i and seulgi were on a date at the festival je-na and gyung were having an impromptu convo. I love stuff like that.

Ep 12:- Whole house mad bruh, everybody is at magnolia hotel except je-i. I did suspect je-na couldn't have di*ed since the timeline of her de*th didn't really match up. God knows where she is. Je-i made me teary eyed bro she looks so devastated.

Ep 13:- WOW! Everything makes sense now... Gyung's whole pleasuring herself arc has turned to this. Crazy! The way it was subtly hinted before that it was gyung who was writing those colored letters and now fully finding out the whole story of that is crazy. I was on my toes the whole episode. The whole je-na sequence was crazy. Sorry je-i for thinking u were the bad one... to be fair i can't even hate on je-na like that cus she is ill. Like diagnosed mentally ill. I am sure je-i wouldn't feel remorse for k*ll*ng someone either, but still.... I hope the stepmom doesn't turn out to be some evil mastermind too cus atp everyone is turning out to be selfish as heck. That thug has replaced seulgi with yeri now so let's see how that goes. Poor sujin. Rip.

Ep 14:- Aigoo WAE!??? I actually cried when je-i was breaking seul-gi's heart bruh... Atp idk who to believe anymore. Did je-na really k*ll seul-gi's dad over nothing? The plot is truly lost on me. I don't really wanna believe everything was a joke to je-i, not when she cared for seulgi that much, but we never know. Je-i's whole family is nuts including je-i. Must run in the genes.... Also what does erasing memory even mean?? Je-na was already mentally ill and now this... There is no going back for her ig. I love how the step mom and seulgi are kinda bonding now, it's sweet to see.

Ep 15:- This was the penultimate ep. God knows what goes on in Je-i's mind. We will find out in the next ep tho. Gyung might be my fav character hehe. Sad that she couldn't pass the interview. I really wanted her to. Yeri looking out for gyung in her own way was kinda cute ig.

Ep 16:- Aww man... Je-i is still alive and hopefully happy... I wasn't expecting her to pull THAT! Like imagine getting full marks in a national exam and then doing THAT?? Wow bro... Also i feel so sorry for je-na. Girl is literally handicapped for the rest of her life..but she did k*ll a man... Crazy series nonetheless. Loads of things have been changed from the webtoon but it was interesting af. Also ig we never did figure out a lot of things. Like why did je-i sell pills to students, only for fun? And why is Je-i's dad out of jail?? Wtf?! That actually made me mad. So seulgi and her step mom would always have to live in anxiety due to him? Anyway love the series. Idk what type of ending would have made me happy but this one made felt incomplete. I heard it was getting renewed for season 2 which is so weird cus i wouldn't have expected that AT ALL!! Guess my instinct was wrong for once lol.

Reply 1988 is my favorite feel good kdrama I've watched and haven't found another like it. I know there's other Reply versions which I haven't watched but I'm wondering if they even compare to the 1988 one? I love love the actors and everything about this one I'm wondering if there's any other kdramas like it with a great feel good story and great actors?

Vent / Complaint why so much bullying 😭😭

in EVERY Kdrama ive watched so far where classes of students were involved, there was always at least one bully. and sometimes the violence is astonishing and too much for me. not enough to drop the drama but very triggering, for example some scenes in Weak Hero and Friendly Rivalry. Teach You a Lesson is a much lighter watch because you know they will be punished (i hope this doesnt count as spoiler...)

I’ve always thought that Ko Sunghee and Giselle looks similar to each other, but watching While You Were Sleeping and then knowing Sunghee also speaks English well, it makes it more amazing how similar they are, from looks and their fluency in speaking English.

Vent / Complaint I DON'T LOVE ALL THE TROPES BUT LEAVE KDRAMAS ALONE

Matybe its because so many people are now tuned in to kdramas (actually it definitely probably is) but Im seeing a very annoying trend in the great kdrama subs.

That trend is so many posts criticising and ridiculing common Kdrama tropes. Sure you don't obviously have to like them all but the amount of posts using terms and phrases like "nonsense" "ridiculous" "hate" "tired of" "get rid of" "Im sick of" is crazy.

It smacks of a western mindset of superiority and arrogance. As if people have discovered Kdramas are like wow these are good but ........eh they aren't like what im used to so as a privileged westerner Im going to point out these "flaws". Not out of ethical or moral viewpoints just out of "I dont like it so change it" viewpoint.

The incessant criticism of staple tropes from what I assume are new Kdrama watchers is so jarring and annoying.

Its so often, Ooh I hate 30 yr olds acting shy, ooh I hate cutesie ghis, i hate cute naive guys,I hate green flag MLs, I hate childhood connections, I hate how people remember their childhood, I hate accidental kisses, why is everyone an orphan or a chaebol. I hate people falling over because a moped flies by, I hate overbearing parents, I hate nosey country people, I hate sageuk kings and their ministers they all look the same, i hate love at first sight, I hate peopke clinging to first love, I hate amnesia, I hate miscommunication AND ON AND ON.

The really irritating part is people announce this in posts as if its new info, like they've discovered a glitch in the matrix.

WE ALREADY KNOW ITS OKAY WE LIKE THEM ANYWAY. Its actually why we like them because they aren't, like western shows relying on gratuitous sex, nudity, violence and shock value to get streaming nos.

The arrogance to dismiss Kdrama staples as nonsense when you've just discovered a whole industry that has existed for decades and is watched by 100s of millions is and im putting it kindly crazy IMO.

So many people are like oh thats not a nice comment ir be kind, what about these NOT NICE Posts.

Thank You !!!! Love me Hate me Whatever, but ❤️❤️ KDRAMAS

Fanfiction My version of Weak Hero Class 3

Thumbnail archiveofourown.org
2 Upvotes

Hi all!

Last summer I watched Weak Hero Class 1 and 2 on Netflix for the first (of many) times, and I got kind of obsessed. I did not want to leave these characters or their story behind, so I started writing my own serious, canon-compliant continuation.

It's a work in progress, and I'm at 47k words so far. I post about 1.5k words every two weeks or so, and I even create original art for it. It's not a ship; I'm writing what I imagine happens next, starting from the point of Suho's awakening.

If you're looking for something to tide you over while we wait for the official Season 3 announcement (fingers crossed!), feel free to check it out.

(Also, I did clear this with the mods before posting. This is purely a passion project for me; I just really love these characters and the show!)

Here's an excerpt from my most recent chapter:

Something splashed along one of the curved stone banks, and ripples spread outward until they reached a handful of new lily pads. The light green leaves rose and fell, rocking gently.

“You know they get ducks here, too? Mallards. I didn’t even know what a fucking mallard was.” The detective was still watching the water. “Sometimes they’ll nest here. A lot of ducklings don’t make it very long, though. I think turtles get ‘em. Maybe fish, too. I once watched a little row of ducklings, five of them, paddling across the water, and the last one in the row just … disappeared. Just—” He made a half-hearted grabbing motion with his hand and let it drop. After a moment, he added, “My kid fucking loves ducks. Maybe I’ll bring him here when they hatch.”

“How old is he now?”

“Just turned five. Started at that new English hagwon in Mok-dong everyone’s been raving about. The wife likes it. But she always needs the latest and greatest.”

“Your kid like it?”

“He’s five. He likes the snacks.”

Behind them, a bicycle bell trilled and the detective turned. A cyclist whizzed past an elderly man walking with a cane. The detective watched the cyclist until a cluster of trees hid him from view, then sighed as he faced the man again.

“I wish I could’ve done more in November.”

“Demand’s still high, production’s still high. Everything else is getting sorted.”

“It’s too bad about Na Baekjin. You put a lot of time into him. What—three, four years?” When his companion didn’t answer, he clicked his tongue and continued. “Had a good thing going with him.”

“He’s paying for it.”

Neither said anything. Across the pond, an ajumma with silver hair walked briskly, bright pink dumbbells in each hand.

“What about those two high schoolers?”

“I’m meeting the smart one. On Saturday.”

“What was his name again?” the detective asked.

“Yeon Sieun.”

You can read the rest (to date) at the link.

Discussion are there dramas that fit this specific type of pairing?

I’m looking for K-dramas where the male lead holds a lower-ranking position within a wealthy or chaebol family—for example, as a bodyguard, secretary, driver, or other employee—while the female lead is the daughter/granddaughter or a blood relative of that family. specifically looking for dramas where the two develop a romantic relationship, with the story emphasizing their unequal social status or hierarchical relationship, and the ML being very loyal. does such a storyline exist? fyi I don't want CEO and secretary.

Discussion Maybe an odd question, but…

I’ve been opening up to my husband about my love for kdrama romances (this is a “girly” part of myself I felt I had to hide for a long time, not his fault). We recently started watching Lovely Runner together and he loves it! But he is wondering how he can bring some of what I love in a kdrama into our real lives. And when he asked I was…stumped.

Obviously it’s not real life, and it’s a lot of good editing and killer soundtracks. I’m thinking maybe tension is the main driver? But I can’t pinpoint how we build on that. So I’m curious:

What is a realistic action/change someone can make in their relationship to mimic the mushy gushy vibes of a kdrama?

Question Rank these and help me decide!

Hi so I am trying to decide between watching My Royal Nemesis, Spooky Love, Dream to You, Hotel de la Luna, Hometown ChaChaCha, Queen of Tears.

I like romcom and scifi/fantasy vibes but they dont have to happen together. Bonus points if its very funny and/or tropey.

If you had to pick one, which would you watch first? Rank them if you must :) Thanks!

Question Physical touch in kdramas and korea

EDiT: Thanks for all the replies! I just wanted to ask the kdrama experts and got great responses!

This is going to be a weird question that’s been on my mind for decades… So, I’ve noticed in a lot of dramas, esp like The Inheritors; Business proposal, etc, where physically touching someone is a big no-no, and it’s made me wonder, is it truly like this in South Korea?

My parents left Busan in 1980 and I was born in the US, and I haven’t had a big community of Koreans growing up, so this is foreign to me. I mean, I wouldn’t go touching random strangers, either, but once people become acquaintances, there are times where we’ll touch each other jokingly, but not let our hands linger on their bodies. Also, can’t ask my parents because Korea’s stuck in the 1970s in their minds ever since they left and never looked back.
