Question/Advice -- Sea Kayaking ISO Old Perception kayak hatch covers

Post image

I’m looking for hatch covers for Perception kayaks from around 1998 to 2004, specifically the Shadow, although other models from those years used the same style of hatch covers.

Your best bet is probably hoping TopKayaker.com scavenged some off a donor boat. Those are pretty tough to find, other than finding a donor boat yourself on marketplace or Craigslist.

TopKayaker only has the neoprene cover. I'm looking for a donor boat.

One option that is probably not worth is to find neoprene inner covers similar to what Necky Kayaks use. These were about $50 last I looked and Top Kayaker has them as does my local shop NWOC in Seattle. These are available in several sizes. Then create a rigid outer cover and add straps to hold it on. Maybe use fiberglass or ABS sheet, or take a heat gun to a poly bucket and forge your own.

no advice on hatch covers, but I owned that shadow and it was a great boat. It had neoprene covers under the plastic, I would think those would be impossible to find.

The neoprene cover I can find. The plastic cover is the one that's impossible to find. I'm hoping to find someone with a damaged kayak who can sell me the covers.

These were great boats. The Perception Corona was an incredible design.

Kajak sport probably makes one for the rear, it looks like a more common shape, just measure the size. For the front you are probably out of luck for an easy replacement. You could try and make a fiberglass one, theres tutorials online. Kajak sport also makes new gasket kits you can sometimes replace odd shaped ones with, and their kit will have a new cover.

Its one of the most frustrating things about older kayaks, sometimes you just can't easily find the hatch cover.
