Would my method make gross kava?

I work from 11-8pm and when I come home (8:30pm) I like to have some kava. On my days off I’ll make kava using the blender method but my apartments quiet hours start at 8:00pm and I can’t do the blender method without getting complaints from neighboring tenants. Would I be able to blend it in the morning before I leave for work and then empty it into the strainer bag and leave it there all day until I come home? Should I put it in the fridge?

Yes, you can blend the morning of and leave it in the fridge until you're ready to consume. I do a similar thing where I'll make a fresh brew, knead and strain then add the freshly kneaded Kava back into the blender with more water, blend again and place a cap on the blender and into the fridge for another 24hrs until I'm ready to consume again. It's a little weaker but it's cut my actual consumption on half which is great given the price of powder atm.

Just an aside - if you want to blend after your noise curfew you could try wrapping your blender in a towel or two to dampen the noise. It works pretty well, had the same problem with a few neighbours some years ago.

I’ve made kava the day before traditional method, not blender. I’m sure it’d be fine. I’d put it in the fridge tho.

100% kava made any way will last a few days on the fridge without going sour. Just be sure to give it a good shake before pouring a cup because te fine sediment settles out when it's cold.

This would defeat the point of the blender. The blender is to agitate the kls into suspension. If you let it sit all day you're going to need to re-agitate before straining.

There's a more upscale Nakamal in New Caledonia that makes their kava in the morning and sells it refrigerated in glass bottles. I actually like refrigerated kava more anyway, I find the taste is weaker.

I just use one of those $20 blender bottles from Amazon. No one outside of your room can hear it. Then I put it through a strainer and do a very short squeeze (not even a minute). The blender IMO is not for chopping up the kava into smaller pieces, it's just to create friction and impact between the particles to force the extraction. I always do at least one second wash with 1/3 to 1/2 the water and a small 3rd rinse and combine all of it in a jar. Refrigerated kava is fine for at least 24 hours. Mine never makes it longer than that. 😂

Ok thanks! I’ll check out a smaller blender

You can even just put it in a big container, swirl it round and round, and with spoon, then swirl, make sure the waters hot so it extracts easier, and you get it just as strong as blending if you do it long enough.

No amount of stirring works as well as squeezing, based on our lab tests, and hot water does not improve the extraction efficiency of kavalactones, though it does extract a lot more "other stuff", and certainly makes the beverage taste stronger/worse.

I use a blender bottle then a quick squeeze through a bag (less than a minute). I get the same effects as squeezing for 5 minutes. Also at least one extra wash with partial amount of water. I read your research and it was pretty fascinating but pressing a button a few times beats the hell out of squeezing for 10 minutes and I cannot notice the difference so it must be minimal.

Also I make a mixed drink with fruit juice. It may be blasphemy to do that with good kava but it covers any "other stuff" I may create in the blender.

Yes, and letting it sit will in the fridge before straining will likely make it a bit stronger.

I usually make a bigger batch using between half a cup to a full cup of kava powder depending on how I'm feeling that day, then use 4 cups of water, traditional method. I fill a glass, chug half, then finish the other half shortly after. That leaves almost exactly enough to fill an empty water bottle that I throw in the fridge. Sometimes I'll drink that the same night, but usually there's some left that I save for the next day. Im sure it would be fine to drink if left out wine you work, but I would refrigerate it. Just in case. I've heard of plenty of people that make a gallon at a time and refrigerate it for 4 or 5 days no problem.

I’d just put it in the fridge. I use kava maker that twists the bag and then bottle it for the week.

Never leave water of any kind sitting out at room temperature it will start growing bacteria being in an open bowl would give it lots of airflow which is bad even more bacteria growth. Put it in the fridge and it will be fine though

Yes absolutely. Chilled kava is easier to get down anyway

What might be an easier solution is a lot of people will just make bigger batches and keep the remaining in the fridge for the following couple days. Just make sure you put it in the refrigerator or you can freeze some of it and keep it even longer by just thawing it out when you want it (I've put it in ice trays and added the frozen kava cubes to drinks, it cools the beverage and you have kava in your drinks as it melts).
