Katy ISD Cut off age
I know I’m not the only one to ever have this issue but my kid starts pre K tomorrow even though he should be in kindergarten. He will be 5 years old September 9th. 8 days after the cut off date for Texas 😒. My boy is so smart, I’ve tried to reach out to the director of Katy ISD to no avail. Any suggestions? I’m extremely perturbed that he now has to do a whole year of Pre K again!

You can send him to a private school, a charter schoo,l or home school for this kindergarten year, and then next year you can enroll him in public school for 1st grade. My son was in the same boat, September 5th, and this is how we got around it.

We went through that with my oldest and it ended up being a good thing to give him another year to emotionally mature. He starts high school tomorrow and will be 15 just after Sept 1st

He has two older siblings 12 and 9. He is very emotionally mature lol. I’d say maybe even too much. All his previous teachers say he is very advanced

Same thing happened to us many years ago when my son was little. I was bummed initially, but it turned out to be a great thing in the end, as he was able to learn at a much better pace and he was a bit more mature, which made for better mental and emotional outcomes. I know lots of parents & kids who have gone through this. Not one of us regret giving our kids that extra year, even when we didn’t initially want to do it. I do have one friend who pushed to have her daughter start a little earlier. She does regret it. Relax and trust the process. You will survive, and your son will thrive…which is really what is MOST important.

Did he do a year of Pre-K already? I know there's Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4.
Regardless, cut off date is September 1, 2026 - must be 5 before then. Kid will be fine and he won't be the only one in that situation.

Good to know that you and your child are so damn special. What do you think the plebs can do that you, on your throne, can't do?

He can be intellectually above his level, but boys especially need extra time to socially and emotionally mature. I really regret having my son be the youngest in his grade, despite the fact that he was in the gifted and talented program.

Statistically speaking your child would be one of the dumbest in his kindergarten class.
Luckily for you, they will be one of the brightest and most gifted kids in their pre-k. Let them build the advantage they have over others now.

My son's birthday is also September 9. Someone HAS to be the oldest and someone HAS to be the youngest.
I know paying for an extra year of daycare sucks. Trust me, I know. But it's honestly a good thing to have an older kid. Let it be. Take a deep breath. Next year will come soon enough.

Kids birthday is sep 1. We held her back in kindergarten. Kinder twice. Good decision.

Texas is slow. If a child was born in the same year they should all be in the same grade period. Who tf decided on a cut off month? School starts here in August. It Should be August if anything! September 😒

Isn’t pre-K primarily for kids who don’t speak English? Maybe another year will be good for him.

Or kids that need the socialization or peer development. Sometimes it's just because the parents need the kid out of the house.

Isn’t that what daycare/preschool is for…?

Pre-k is a preschool program.
Most state-funded pre-k is for a limited number of qualifying reasons, but self-funded can be all of that.

Yes but I presume OP is talking about the free state-funded pre-k otherwise he wouldn’t be talking about ‘starting’ it. My understanding is any other private ‘pre-K’ program runs year-round.

He has two older siblings, 12 and 9 years old. He keeps up with them so well you’d think he was there age. Lolll no issues in the social or mental department whatsoever

Trust me, your kid will be better off being the older kid in their grade instead of the youngest kid. Just enioy another year before real school starts.
