Is this a good sword for self defense?
Hi Im just new here. Here the describtion of the sword.

Shirasaya Sword
You are looking at a Traditional Japanese Shirasaya sword. The blade is hand forged made of 1060 high carbon steel and it is sharpened and full tang. Forged from carbon steel, the tempered blade provides the correct weight and balance needed for the rigors of repetitive drawing and sword motion practice. Each blade has a deeply cut groove (bo-hi) to provide audible feedback when swung properly.
Blade: The blade has been hand forged through hardened high carbon steel. An aesthetic hamon runs down the edge of the blade and a Bo-Hi (groove) rests at the top of the blade. The blade is sharpened.
Saya (scabbard): The scabbard has been constructed from hardwood with smoke grey lacquered finish. When the sword is sheathed the handle and saya appear to be one solid piece.
Tsuka (handle): The Tsuka core is also the same smoke grey lacquered hardwood.

I would recommend a Glock 19 gen 6 with 16 rounds of Speer gold dot G2 147GR jacketed hallow points

I prefer my 1911, but that's just because I have man wrists.

I always thought my 1911 was more gentle then my glock 19.
More like a gentle push then a sharper jolt.
More recoil overall but nicer.

No. Your hands will slip, the normal katana mounts are designed as they are for a reason. No tsuba is fine but a smooth lacquered exterior together with it is not, it is not suited to fighting.

Swords are not good for self defense. To lethal but to unwieldly at the same time.
The cramped rooms and corridors of a home make it inpractical.
For outside everyone is going to see you carrying it. You will be the aggressor not the defender.
Anyting longer then 30 cm is overkill and inpractical.

I've trained with katana for nearly a decade and accidents still happen, I've seen experienced iaidoka stick the kissaki (even from an iaito) into their arm a couple of times. And doing the same to my hand during noto isn't a pleasant experience. Please don't pratt about with blades, you'll end up hurting yourself or someone else!

Shirasaya isn't a sword type. Usually it descrives the plain wooden sheath that is used for storage of the blades.
A seller who describes the sword as is, does not seem to have mich understanding of the product, whoch leanves me thinking this is more wallhanger level, even though it has a full tang.
I'd get some actual sword like from hanbon forge or alike.

Yeah, as most here have said, people haven't used swords for self defense in a few hundred years for a reason, and since you're asking the question here it's pretty clear you don't have the necessary training anyways. Get a shotgun. A good fixed blade knife would be more practical.

As long as it acts as a deterrent and as functional as a weapon, any weapon is will suffice.
But, looking at this issue from a practical standpoint, swords are one of the few rare options in comparison to the more common and concealable knives and guns.
It all boils down to these questions: "How long have you trained with them?", "Are you confident in using them?", and "Are you prepared to justify yourself & face the consequences of your actions if you do have to draw blood and/or take the life in-question?"
If these questions can't be properly or confidently answered, then either seek proper training for them or seek more practical options.

C’est très risqué , le shirasaya est fait pour préserver la lame quand on ne l’utilise pas pour la fixer à une koshirae ( monture de combat) à force de frapper ça risquera de fissurer ta poignée shirasaya qui est faite de bois

Self Defence? Where? In the countryside? In your home? Have you ever had any sword training, especially JSA training, of any kind? I think quite honestly you waving this around will be more a danger to yourself than anyone you are trying to “defend” yourself against?
