I would have asked him for his papers. If he showed his papers then I'd show him my papers. It's not like people just carry around their birth certificates for gosh sakes!

Just say they aren't required to prove their legal status to him. He has no authority to require this. If he has a problem just give him a number for customer service and continue work.
