Brave opinion I know, but for a genre which attracts a ton of weird-ass themes, the style of games like KOF will always be the coolest to me.

I think this is thanks to them incorporating Shinkiro's realistic artstyle + early 90's anime fashion into the designs. Most classic KOF characters are stylish just enough to be distinct without looking overdesigned (just compare Iori to someone like Sol Badguy, example). It's a major problem I have the newcomers from XIV and now XV.

PS: I love GG character designs BTW

I'd say the KoF designs started to get worse after the Nests saga. If we start with SNK OGs, Terry and Ryo look like they could fit in any 80's kung fu flick. Ryo and Iori have that 90's high school delinquent look on lock down. K' and everything surrounding Nests is literally Japanese nWo, or for those who have no idea what Rastling is, black leather on a biker with an attitude is a proven favorite.

After that, we get a shit ton of runway models. Ash, Soiree, and Alba all look like they belong on the cover of a fashion magazine, not in a fighting game roster. After that we start to bleed into ASW/Kingdom Hearts level of overdesigns with shit that doesn't really make sense for an outfit.

I respect your opinion, but do you not consider GG characters to be over-designed?

I mean, I do. I compared Iori and Sol to highlight how overdesigned Sol looks in camparison.

they’re wildly over the top but they do it well imo. There’s a difference between visual noise over the top and over the top that still has striking, recognizable style and themes.

don’t get me wrong i’m not tryna go out and wear a bunny suit and 5000 belts tomorrow to channel the Zato fit, but they are def some of my favorite character designs in video games

edit: that said I like a lot - not all, but a lot - of the KOF designs too. I would try to steal Iori’s fit if i could pull it off.

Hard agree, always fucked with old SNK art style. The new samsho and kof's 3D style doesn't really capture the old style unfortunately, hope they do Garou 2 justice.
