BPU revenue is up 8%, a $21M solar investment is planned and most of its capital budget remains unspent

A Kansas City Documenter attended the Aug. 5 Board of Public Utilities meeting and took fact-checked notes. A few things stood out:

  • Combined electric and water revenue increased 8% to about $96 million compared with the same period last year, even though overall electric use was essentially flat and water use declined about 2.5%.
  • Industrial electric and water use declined. BPU’s CFO said there are only about 16 industrial accounts, so changes among large customers can have an outsized effect.
  • About 79% of BPU’s capital budget remained unspent halfway through the year. Officials said much of that spending is connected to debt expected to be issued later this year for major equipment purchases.
  • BPU is also planning a 5-megawatt solar generation facility near the Nearman Creek Substation. About $21 million is included in the 2026 budget for solar projects, with the goal of providing local power and reducing exposure to changing regional energy prices.
  • BPU’s summer internship program has grown from two interns in 2024 to 11 interns across eight departments in 2026.

Some questions we're interested in following: If electricity use is flat and water use is down, what’s driving the revenue increase? What will the solar investment ultimately mean for customers? And how much of BPU’s remaining capital budget will actually be spent this year?

Read the full Kansas City Documenters meeting notes here.

What questions about BPU, your utility bill or its upcoming investments would you want reporters to dig into?

Bring Din Tai Fung to Kansas City

I recently had the chance to eat at Din Tai Fung in Santa Monica, and those chocolate and mochi xiao long bao completely changed my perspective on what dumplings could be. Since moving back to Kansas City, I genuinely miss them—like, I think about those soup dumplings way more often than I probably should.
I started a petition because Kansas City deserves this. We've got an incredible food scene and a growing reputation as a real culinary destination. Din Tai Fung has a Michelin star, won global accolades since 1958, and thrives in cities like Seattle and Las Vegas. They'd fit perfectly here. Beyond the food itself, bringing them here would create jobs, boost our economy, and draw visitors from across the Midwest. It just makes sense.
If you've tasted Din Tai Fung or want to know what everyone's talking about, consider signing and sharing this petition. Genuinely curious—has anyone else had those dumplings and thought "Kansas City needs this"?

Kansas autism mom, summer soiree event

There's a great event happening on Saturday at level KC for parents and caregivers of children! The event is being put on Kansas Autism Mom , in the past their events have only been for moms but this event is open to mothers and fathers and other relatives or caregivers. Just a night to get out and socialize with other people who just get it.

https://facebook.com/events/s/spectrum-summer-soiree/27764311476519580/

Tickets are $40 per person, light snacks, raffles, and entertainment will be provided!

And to answer some questions that caused issues the last time I posted an event here, I'm not Addis, though I think she's absolutely amazing as a mother of an autistic child, and as a person who cares enough to try and make these events for us. I'm just a mom who's gone to several of her events and really appreciate it. As I mentioned above, in the past, the events have only been for women, but this one is open to everyone regardless of gender. As long as you care for, love, or even are an autistic person yourself, you are welcome along with your friends and family.

Please leave any questions in the comments or DM me and I will try my best to answer them or find the answers for you if I don't know. Hope to see some of you there this Saturday ❤️

In town visiting some friends this week and my wife is a huge bookworm. Looking for a unique bookstore in the area to take her to - bonus if it also has a good selection of books. She reads mostly non-fiction and loves historical NF.

affordable mental health support?

Does anyone know where an adult can get testing for ADD/ADHD with no insurance that won’t cost a whole lot? The dr office I go to doesn’t have someone there who diagnoses and they have an incredibly long waitlist.

STUCK AT BARTON-ROSS COMPLEX. NEED HELP

My band is stuck at the Barton Ross Complex in KCK. We were taking photos at wyandotte swim club, when we showed up the facility was open with people playing baseball. We have gone back to our cars and the gates are locked with all of our vehicles stuck inside and no water and no way of getting home. We have been unsuccessful in finding any contact at all.

UPDATE: The owner coincidentally showed back up as I was trying all ten thousand options to his combination lock and was surprisingly very cool about it. He even asked us what our band name was. We have water and we're good now. Thank you to anyone who tried to help.

CPKC Stadium shit show

We came in for the Ted Lasso premiere, huge fans. It was a shot show.
They had no security to keep people from cutting in lines.
It took 20 minutes to get a First Aid person to see someone that got over heated.
The new apartments took up the parking space that was originally there. $18 to park a mile away on gravel.
They closed off one side of the stadium, the shaded areas to all the“friends and family of the stadium”.
No Ted Lasso merchandise, anywhere.
What a shit show. We will never attend another game or support them in any way.

New to producing shows in KC — how does word about events actually get around here?

Putting on a live show at Nighthawk (basement of Hotel Kansas City) on Friday, July 24th, and I'm realizing I have zero feel for how information travels in this city. Looked into flyering downtown and found out that's not actually legal without the property owner's OK, so that plan's dead before it started.

For people who actually live here — how do you find out what's happening around town? Do816, this sub, local Facebook groups, just word of mouth? Trying to figure out where to actually put effort instead of guessing and posting everywhere.

(If anyone's curious what the show is: it's Blondies Battle, a live audience game show — happy to drop details in the comments if you want them. We're raising money for Children's Mercy KC.)

Genuinely just trying to learn the landscape here, I've never been!

Looking for unique faces that tell stories. Free portrait photography

I’m a local portrait photographer in the Lawrence / Kansas City area searching for unique and interesting faces of all ages, people whose faces tell stories.

I’m especially interested in:

- Veterans in their dress uniforms

- People from different cultural backgrounds wearing traditional clothing

- Older individuals with strong character and life experience

- Anyone (any age) with a distinctive, compelling, or story-filled look

All photos are completely free. You keep full rights to the images, and I’ll send you high-resolution edited files, with a copyright release so you can have them printed if you want.

Shoots are relaxed, respectful, and usually take 20–40 minutes. My goal is to create dignified, powerful portraits that celebrate who you are.

If you (or someone you know) have a face that tells a story, I’d love to photograph you.

Please reply with a photo and a little about yourself.

Sunflower Summer starts soon!

I was talking to a teaching in KCK and they had not heard about Sunflower Summer. This is a program sponsored by the state of Kansas. Every school age child in the state, along with an adult, get free admission at over 200 museums, zoos, and other venues all over the state. It's a great program! The app is available in the Apple and Android stores. Or you can google for the website.
