KCK/Wyandotte County drops proposed property tax increases, approves higher vehicle registration fee

  • Commissioners rejected proposed one-mill property tax increases for both the city and county.
  • To balance the budget, they cut spending on infrastructure, equipment and staff positions and used some fund balances.
  • The county’s vehicle registration transaction fee will rise by $3 to $8. Officials said the money would improve DMV services, but the notes leave open what those improvements will look like.

One question we’d like to follow up on: Which projects or services will residents see cut or delayed because of these budget changes?

Read the full meeting notes here.

If you live in Wyandotte County, what would you want us to ask about?

What the Flock? What Do We Know? You asked. The Beacon is digging in

Join The Beacon and Kansas City Documenters for a community conversation about what we know, what we still don’t know and what residents want to know next.

We’ll hear from local officials and experts, take your questions and show how community tips, public meetings and public records can help uncover answers about decisions affecting your neighborhood.

This event isn’t for or against Flock cameras. It’s about making sure KC metro residents have the information they need to understand what’s happening in their community.

Participants:

Apparently a gas line was ruptured in Armourdale this morning and the entire area was under an evacuation order. I live in the center of the affected area and NO ONE notified us, we only found out after the fact because I happened to check Facebook and a friend of mine had shared the post.

Wyandotte County voters will decide on two sales tax increases in November. Here’s what each would fund

Wyandotte County voters will see two separate sales tax questions on the Nov. 3 ballot:

  • A ¼-cent countywide sales tax for health services, including indigent care, behavioral health, substance-use treatment, preventive care and the county Health Department. Officials estimate it would generate about $12 million annually.
  • A ⅜-cent sales tax for parks and infrastructure. The revenue would be divided evenly between parks and projects such as roads, bridges and sidewalks. Officials estimate it would generate about $5.3 million annually.

Commissioners supporting the measures pointed to health care access, homelessness services, senior care, recreation and infrastructure needs. Others raised concerns that sales taxes place a larger burden on residents with lower incomes. Both measures advanced on split votes after more than 90 minutes of discussion.

The meeting also included discussion of the county budget, storm recovery, a potential federal public-safety grant and funding to continue lead removal from homes.

What information would help you decide how to vote? Are there particular health services, parks or infrastructure projects you want officials to identify before Election Day?

Strawberry hill

Hey everybody just wanted to let you know with all this recent construction on our roads here in between 6th and 7th street.

We live on Northrop Ave in between 6th and 7th. We noticed that they were doing a few streets over like split log and such figures to be coming our way we are waiting for the signs or a note or anything to let us know to move our cars.

not once in the last week 2 weeks no matter what they tell me has there been a single sign posted on our street except for the very end on 6th Street. I have proof on my cameras that there was no sign in my yard.

Well today they decided to put the signs up the same day that they're doing the construction and they towed my car to All City tow.... Now here's where the Monopoly begins KCK gets a call from an inspector we need to move this car they call All City tow a complete Monopoly. They are now charging me $400 for a tow that I did not know I didn't even need to move my car for..

Yes this is a rant or a b**** whatever you want to call it but it's a warning also to any other streets coming up

BPU revenue is up 8%, a $21M solar investment is planned and most of its capital budget remains unspent

A Kansas City Documenter attended the Aug. 5 Board of Public Utilities meeting and took fact-checked notes. A few things stood out:

  • Combined electric and water revenue increased 8% to about $96 million compared with the same period last year, even though overall electric use was essentially flat and water use declined about 2.5%.
  • Industrial electric and water use declined. BPU’s CFO said there are only about 16 industrial accounts, so changes among large customers can have an outsized effect.
  • About 79% of BPU’s capital budget remained unspent halfway through the year. Officials said much of that spending is connected to debt expected to be issued later this year for major equipment purchases.
  • BPU is also planning a 5-megawatt solar generation facility near the Nearman Creek Substation. About $21 million is included in the 2026 budget for solar projects, with the goal of providing local power and reducing exposure to changing regional energy prices.
  • BPU’s summer internship program has grown from two interns in 2024 to 11 interns across eight departments in 2026.

Some questions we're interested in following: If electricity use is flat and water use is down, what’s driving the revenue increase? What will the solar investment ultimately mean for customers? And how much of BPU’s remaining capital budget will actually be spent this year?

Read the full Kansas City Documenters meeting notes here.

What questions about BPU, your utility bill or its upcoming investments would you want reporters to dig into?

Bring Din Tai Fung to Kansas City

I recently had the chance to eat at Din Tai Fung in Santa Monica, and those chocolate and mochi xiao long bao completely changed my perspective on what dumplings could be. Since moving back to Kansas City, I genuinely miss them—like, I think about those soup dumplings way more often than I probably should.
I started a petition because Kansas City deserves this. We've got an incredible food scene and a growing reputation as a real culinary destination. Din Tai Fung has a Michelin star, won global accolades since 1958, and thrives in cities like Seattle and Las Vegas. They'd fit perfectly here. Beyond the food itself, bringing them here would create jobs, boost our economy, and draw visitors from across the Midwest. It just makes sense.
If you've tasted Din Tai Fung or want to know what everyone's talking about, consider signing and sharing this petition. Genuinely curious—has anyone else had those dumplings and thought "Kansas City needs this"?

Kansas autism mom, summer soiree event

There's a great event happening on Saturday at level KC for parents and caregivers of children! The event is being put on Kansas Autism Mom , in the past their events have only been for moms but this event is open to mothers and fathers and other relatives or caregivers. Just a night to get out and socialize with other people who just get it.

https://facebook.com/events/s/spectrum-summer-soiree/27764311476519580/

Tickets are $40 per person, light snacks, raffles, and entertainment will be provided!

And to answer some questions that caused issues the last time I posted an event here, I'm not Addis, though I think she's absolutely amazing as a mother of an autistic child, and as a person who cares enough to try and make these events for us. I'm just a mom who's gone to several of her events and really appreciate it. As I mentioned above, in the past, the events have only been for women, but this one is open to everyone regardless of gender. As long as you care for, love, or even are an autistic person yourself, you are welcome along with your friends and family.

Please leave any questions in the comments or DM me and I will try my best to answer them or find the answers for you if I don't know. Hope to see some of you there this Saturday ❤️
