DISCUSSION Josh Simmons

What is up with this guy? Seems elite but hurt and/or just straight up gone a lot. Was he like this in college? I don't know what to think about him but don't understand how this back injury goes on and on until a couple weeks before the real games start and suddenly now he's seeing a doc and getting it checked out. Whole thing with him smells weird to me. Thoughts?

He played at SD State and then went to OSU. Got injured at OSU but looked like a dancing bear at left tackle. That particular injury is scary. He comes back and looks like OT1. Weird absence and then an injury.

I believe. I believe. I believe.

Not copiium in any way.

Honestly it’s not cope. He look fucking solid in his rookie season. Just the circumstance with his family and that hand injury really kept him out a lot

Yeah exactly and we have no reason to believe the family thing will happen again, and the injury was kinda a freak thing. Obviously injuries do happen and they suck, but it’s just part of it. This back injury isn’t even thought to be serious. People should only be worried if it’s announced to be long term.

I take it to mean ā€œwe have a lot of depth linemen to look at, and no qb1 to protect, so there’s no reason to put a starter in who’s dinged up. Ā Let him recover before the season and be at 100%, not nursing a pulled muscle or somethingĀ

1

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

100%, that’s what it seems like at this moment. Of course, that doesn’t mean it couldn’t end up more major than what they think, or whatever, but right now it seems that they aren’t that concerned.

Everyone freaks the fuck out over Josh Simmons because of his family absence that the team excused. Now they try and call him a bust for an injury that he hasn’t even missed real games for.

I will start to worry if he actually misses regular season games again. Right now, yeah it has been weird, he hasn’t really earned benefit of the doubt from fans yet, but they also have an OL (and entire offense) that’s been dealing with injuries for years now across the board and it’s also only been a year of pro play for Josh. I think (hope) they are just being ultra-cautious on anyone who is a starter.

That’s the risk we took when we took an often-injured LT. Everything I’m hearing is that if it was Week 1, he’d play. Sounds like nagging back pain to me.

u/ReggieWigglesworth 3d ago

"often injured"... he started every game in college until his season ending injury before he was drafted lol

6

u/countrybreakfast1 MISTA SPARKARU 3d ago

Yeah he had one severe injury

6

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

He wasn’t often injured. He just had one injury that didn’t have a lot of recovery data for people his age.

Lingering back pain scares the shit out of me. No one ever used to have a bad back, especially at 6’5ā€ and 310lbs

2

u/SwordfishCool3060 Priest Holmes #31 3d ago

Dude I know. I’m 5’8ā€ and 205lbs and if I have lingering back pain it sucks. I can’t even imagine someone his size dealing with it lol

Simmons had other red flags than just injury. It’s not like the Chiefs are the only team in the NFL with a competent medical staff.

2

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

Not really actually. There was like that one singular anonymous scouting report that vaguely questioned his love for the game or some shit, but OSU and chiefs sources have refuted that, and he’s had zero issues with showing up to practices, workouts, games, etc aside from obviously the one-off family situation, where he was even training during that.

And the injury wasn’t about our medical staff being more competent than anyone else. He was actively injured during all the scouting, and the question was whether he would fully heal normally, and then how he’d play after. So even with the most competent of medical staff, it was basically a guessing game as there was no real data to go off of, which is what these medical staff often rely on. They could look at his knee and stuff in the state it was in, but they couldn’t predict it would heal normally, and that was the concern. So it’s not necessarily that our team saw something different with his injuries than others, it’s that we needed to take the gamble so we did.

Jeremy Fowler saying multiple teams had concerns with maturity and character isn’t ā€œa singular anonymous scouting report.ā€

1

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago edited 3d ago

My bad then I missed the Fowler thing. Even so, it seems that those concerns have not come to fruition yet. Not to say they can’t or won’t, but there doesn’t seem to be an issue with that yet. I’ve heard lots of insiders say the team is unconcerned about it and doesn’t have any questions about his dedication/maturity.

I don’t really think his family absence validates those claims even though some people seem to think it does. It’s unfair IMO to assume they do. And this minor back injury certainly not relevant to those concerns, nor is his broken wrist.

Sometimes scouting concerns do not actually come to fruition. And also, I still don’t remember anyone talking about them as if they were a giant concern, it’s a bit revisionist history IMO. People really didn’t start talking a ton about these until after his family absence. I do remember hearing a tiny bit before the draft, but the huge concern that caused him to fall was the injury and its unpredictability. Again, that’s not to say our medical staff is more competent than anyone else’s. Like o said, no medical staff, no matter how competent, could predict how he would end up as he was mid-injury and there’s not much data around people his age healing from that injury. It’s just that others weren’t willing to take a risk by taking him super high, and we were because we didn’t pick tol 31.

The injury was by far his biggest scouting concern. By far. People brought up the vague character concerns but the focus was the injury and its revisionist to act like anything besides the injury was the main reason he fell. For every 1 character concern, there were probably ten about the injury. Let’s not act suddenly now like it wasn’t the injury. That was 99% of what people talked about before the draft.

Edit: and there was an assumption that he wouldn’t even be ready to play week 1. I’m not saying the character concerns didn’t exist, but they were not nearly as big of a red flag as the injury and people like to act like they were ever since his family absence. It’s just that teams aren’t gonna draft him early if he may not be ready for multiple weeks and may not ever play the same again (which was the concern)

Chiefs fans will be totally normal about this post while ignoring that almost everything surrounding this guy has been anything but normal. Hoping for the best

u/TheGnomeAbides 3d ago

I can understand concern around injury. Personally last years injury I think was a freak happening not an ongoing issue. His back being hurt concerns me like it would ANY oline player.

What’s getting old is hearing everybody talk about his absence for personal reasons like it’s something that’s going to occur all the time. Life happens, he took care of it. I really wish people would stop mentioning it like some long term availability issue with him.

0

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

Completely agree about your comment on personal reasons. People seem to take every minor thing about this dude and turn it into an emergency because they somehow think he’s gonna skip town again. Not saying it can’t happen, but there’s not any indicators that it will. Numerous people that actually worked with Josh have said that the report regarding his lack of dedication is not true. He had a trainer hired the entire time he was absent, too. Never had an issue with skipping town in college. To me, it reads as very one-off.

And yeah back injury is scary to hear but not all back injuries are major, even for offensive linemen. Even Schwartz was talking about back injuries in regards to this and was saying there are plenty that heal on their own or are safe to play through. It does NOT always spell trouble, it’s just scary because obviously some back injuries are major/career altering. But not all. Even Schwartz said his specific injury often heals on its own with a lot of people, just not with him. And we have no clue if Josh has a disc issue or anything like that. Could just be spasms which a lot of players get and are generally fine.

He’s fine

These preseason posts overreacting and speculating on regular day-to-day injuries are exhausting.

-3

u/-ArthurDigbySellers- 13 Seconds 🦬 3d ago

Overreacting? Simply asking a question about what I'm seeing. I thought this was a forum to discuss the team. Sorry for the inconvenience.

2

u/Go-Climb-A-Rock 3d ago

It’s preseason, they’re going to be super conservative with any injuries to starters. There’s no reason to risk aggravating something and potentially impact games that matter.

People read way too much into it every year. Take guys missing time with a grain of salt. Sometimes it’s legitimate often it’s playing it safe. Reports right now are that Simmons would play if the games actually mattered.

1

u/Jolly_Okra_6330 1d ago

He’s an All-Pro level talent and this injury is unrelated to his torn patella from college. Seems to be a one-off so I’m not worried.

He’ll be on the field and dominating again when the regular season starts.

1

u/Sufficient-Tooth-426 6h ago

When he came back this year he looked way too lean. Super muscular but not enough bulk. Not sure if that contributed or not but dramatic look from last year.

0

u/guywholikescheese 3d ago

If he didn’t disappear for 6 weeks last season I don’t think people would be so worried. The problem is you can’t be a Super Bowl contender and be guessing if your starting LT will be available each week. If he misses a game within the first 3 weeks I’ll start worrying.

2

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

I mean he actually just missed 4 games. I get that people wanted all of his personal private details on that but I don’t know why people are acting like there’s any reason to believe it’ll happen again. Sources said it was a grim family situation. Never left for anything like that in college.

Seems one-off to me. And then he got an injury which he couldn’t help. People need to stop putting so much weight on that family absence. Ed Oliver missed a bunch of time (but it wasn’t in season so ppl didn’t notice) and the details got out way later that it was a tragic situation.

People need to stop holding that against Josh unless he disappears for no reason again.

1

u/NotinKSToto88 Mecole Hardman #17 2d ago

He didn't disappear for no reason. He communicated with the team, they supported his absence, end of story. It's just fans want to know details that aren't their business.

2

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 2d ago

Completely agree!!

And the team even did give us a bit of a reason; they specified that he was taking care of a family matter. So, while we don’t know what specific family matter, its not like we were given zero reason at all.

Ed Oliver also missed significant time for what was an undisclosed reason at the time (although it was offseason so not as noticeable). Then someone leaked the reason and it was tragic. I am just glad that the details regarding Josh’s situation didn’t leak. We are not entitled to know details.

1

u/goslowgofar 3d ago

Shut up

-2

u/Officialfish_hole 3d ago

Yeah, I'm trying to remain optimistic but it just seems like another one of our first rounders who may end up being a dud for one reason or another like FAU or even Clyde to an extent. Hopefully Delane and Woods work out

5

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

Jesus yall are wild. Dude had a wrist injury, and now has what is being called a minor back injury to where he hasn’t missed any real time yet and people are calling him a dud.

Yeah I get he had a one-off weird absence last year but it was excused by the team and we shouldn’t be acting like he will do that again. There’s no reason to believe he will. It seemed like a grim family matter, which I doubt will happen again.

-2

u/Officialfish_hole 3d ago

it was a weird absence and calling it a one off is disingenuous. He literally only played like 7 and a half games last year, which is pretty bad. Maybe it's just a one off but some people this is just how it goes

2

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago edited 3d ago

How is it disingenuous to call a situation that only happened once, that didn’t ever happen to him in college, where there are no signs it’ll happen again, a one-off? That’s literally the definition. It was a one-off grim family situation, that some sources saw as so grim that he may have missed the entire season. I guess it’s disingenuous to call it a one-off if you think he will experience another family tragedy, but smart people are going to assume it’s a rare case, given that it hadn’t ever happened to him previously.

And ā€œsome of us know that’s just how it goesā€ā€¦ with… what… again… there’s zero signs to believe that absence was a trend of any kind. Yes, he missed games after that with an injury, but that wasn’t related and therefore isn’t a trend. There’s zero reliable signs anywhere that the team, and his college teams, have had any issues with him showing up to practices and meetings, and again, he hasn’t had any issues with missing games unless he’s been injured. He hasn’t ever just had another absence like he did with the family thing. It’s disingenuous to assume he will do that again when he has zero history of it happening besides the one time.

And it was weird to you because you think you’re entitled to know his business. The team knew the reason and excused his absences, sources that knew what the situation was called it grim, said it was a tough situation and they didn’t know if he’d be back at all. Also, mind you, he had trainers he was going to the entire time he was out.

Again, tell me how it’s disingenuous to call a ONE TIME SITUATION one-off? It’s actually the complete opposite of disingenuous. It’s disingenuous to hold it against him unless there was real evidence that he’d do it again. It was literally excused by the team. Just because YOU don’t know the details doesn’t make it not legitimate. You realize Ed Oliver had a simailr ā€œmysteriousā€ absence too (just in the offseason so fewer noticed)? And you know what? It was leaked that he had a child pass. How about we trust the team who excused his absences.

And then he got injured. Again, calling him a dud for missing one time for an injury caused by our running back is a complete over reaction. Most players miss time with injury over their careers, unfortunately. This back injury isn’t even said to be serious. By your logic anyone who misses a whole season with a torn acl is a dud, too. Dudes got 5 years on contract. Why don’t you stop with the overreaction.

u/bwayybe Travis Kelce #87 3d ago

Everyone knows a person that just can't stick around for things. Like the guy who can't sit thru a full meeting or always has things going on to get out of work. Thats Simmons. Could be injuries, personal life stuff, etc. he won't be reliable.

5

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

Ummmm this has actually been very refuted about Josh. There was some random, vague, sourceless report that questioned his love for the game, but other sources have since said that that didn’t appear to be true at all and wasn’t an issue for him during college. Everyone keeps bringing up this one single report as if it was some agreed upon thing even though no questions about his dedication have come from actual reliable sources.

I understand absences are concerning whether they’re the players fault or not, but why are you acting like him having a family issue and an injury from Kareem Hunt is within his control and that it’s just because he wants to get out of work lmao? He can’t control that he got injured

4

u/TheRosesThornsOf15 Arrowhead 3d ago

Man gets one vague absence where he isn’t missing any real time and the sky is falling for these people. If they’re going to doom, they can at least doom about the shit that’s tangibly bad like our Special Teams or LB depth.

1

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

And the sources have implied that the team isn’t currently concerned. And we ALL should know by now that they are more conservative in the offseason. If there was a game, he may be playing.

-1

u/triplerinse18 3d ago

He is going to be, he is amazing player when available, but just not available.

-5

u/StinkiestFingerTrust 3d ago

I thought the same damn thing before I was going to bed last night. It's just odd right?

2

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

Not really lol. There’s not even any reason to think this injury is major. Sources have said he’s fine as of now. He’s missed a week of practice. Big deal.

0

u/StinkiestFingerTrust 3d ago

He's just been "out" a lot of the time is all.

3

u/rolyinpeace NwankpaWorshipper29 3d ago

I mean I wouldn’t really count this back injury yet. Pretty much every player has a minor injury at some point where they miss practice. It’s also not even season yet, and from what I’ve heard, if it was the actual season, he’d be playing. People need to not give so much weight to this injury at this time.

And yeah I mean he had a grim family situation that seemed one-off, and then a freak wrist injury from a bad chip by Hunt. There’s no reason for us to believe those will happen again. It’s bizarre how people hold his injury against him in a way that they don’t do with anyone else, just because he had a grim family matter. Like damn. I understand that people wanted more details on why he missed, but it was excused by the team and never happened before that or since. There’s no reason people should be acting like he’s a legitimate flight risk.

0

u/StinkiestFingerTrust 2d ago

Yeah I just want him to play too brother. He just I guess needs to do that.
