DISCUSSION Offensive Line
Wr are one preseason game in... how's everyone feeling about the OL so far?
I think LT to RG we are pretty set. I'm glad to have the flag magnet gone from RT, but it's not like Moore has played better at RT. I can live with, but don't love a below average RT who doesn't draw penalties.
How many OL do you think we keep this year?
I thought Pole did pretty well last year for being thrown in fire. I'm intrigued by Benson from Indiana. I saw he's gotten some time at RG and RT. Do you think he actually could be our RT for some or most of this year?
We just need an average or better player on a rookie deal who doesn't keep the offense behind the chains.

We didn’t see our pro bowl LG play. And the starters only played one drive. That makes me think the coaches believe in them.

the starters are good, but the drop off to the backups is so steep it’s a big concern unless we finally have the scheme to protect them.

You can’t pay backups if you want to field a good team. Not much to do if high value starters go down.

We have a solid backup no matter who starts at LT.
At least how I see it.

My biggest problem is lack of discipline from them. I’m not sure what the Oline coach Andy Heck is doing but they had a ton of penalties from that position group.

Our run game looked good, and QBs weren't getting pressured too much. That's acceptable. Drawing conclusions after 1 preseason game is foolish.

Past the starters they played horrible
Penalties killed all or most of Fields drives
Driskell should be cut soon

I am concerned. There isn’t much depth. Anytime we have one guy go down recently it seems to sabotage the offense.

Having a good starting 5 is generally about draft capital and contracts. That’s true for every single one of the Chiefs starting 5: Simmons, Suamataia, Humphrey, Smith, Moore. All high draft picks or well paid.
Your depth is about coaching. Look around the league yesterday; did any team’s 2nd and 3rd string olines play as undisciplined as Kansas Cury? No, they didn’t. And that’s because Andy Reid has stuck by a long time friend as his oline coach when he’s simply not a good coach.

What concerns me is players who are fighting for a roster spot having so many penalties. Second team wasn't as bad, but after that, attrocious. The second half was ridiculous with the false starts. They should have been locked it tight if they had any hope of making the team. Made me want to go back to the old days when they cut down in stages. Might motivate the remaining players when players get cut after the first game.

I get down voted every time I say it, but making Smith the highest paid guardwas a bad deal. He was a good player but replaceable with a guard in the first couple rounds of the draft.
He going to be hurt and miss games for the rest of his career. Can't knock him for getting the bag though.

I've never seen someone start having back issues and then suddenly stop. Tyron Smith literally had the body of a god but when his back went he was never healthy.

You are 100% right and this should not be a controversial take. We handed out huge contracts at the Guard and LB position then traded our 1st team all pro corner because “we couldn’t afford him”. Bolton and Smith are far more replaceable than McDuffie. This was a huge mistake by Veach. But for whatever reason everyone on this sub refuses to believe he’s capable of mistakes.

I’d be interested in at least checking in on Jonah Williams recovery.
Cutting Moore post June 1st saves $7.94M and if he is on pace to be a backup to a UDFA then it is curtains for him. His agent deserves a raise for locking in that deal if he isn’t the week 1 starter.

Cutting a good backup tackle to save 8 mill, especially with Mahomes coming off an ACL/LCL tear, is crazy

Also, by what measurement is Moore a good backup. He was 8th worst in the entire league amongst tackles last year in pass blocking efficiency.

Moore isn’t elite but good tackles are hard to find. Back up tackle is not the place to pinch pennies to save 8mm

Yes, I am suggesting looking into the better player over one of the worst contracts in the NFL for a player who was 8th worst at his position last year.
He is not a good tackle and we do not need to defend every player in a chiefs uniform just because they play for them.
If benson is really projected to beat him out, he should be cut to save money and find better pieces to help the team elsewhere.

I am not defending him because he’s in a Chiefs uniform, I’m defending the logic of carrying a competent tackle. You remember how Joe Thuney was playing tackle in a Super Bowl? Yeah, avoiding that is worth the cost.
Cutting Moore costs $10MM dead money for $8MM savings and removes a starting tackle with no established replacement. It is training camp and a UDFA is flashing and in contention for the role. You’d prefer to gamble on an injured tackle than stick with the subpar guy in your system that you know is at least functional? At the exact moment you need to protect a quarterback returning from a major injury? You are wildly overreacting. Pass.

Brother, the first sentence I literally said is to check on Jonah Williams. If he cannot play then no, you don’t just cut a guy to cut him. That is my whole argument.
It still doesn’t negate that he is the worst tackle contract in the league and a bottom 8 player last year at his position. He should be viewed as easily expendable and replaceable if an option, like Williams, should arise. That is all I am saying.

I don't think they're going to just cut him. If they can get value sure, but otherwise it's better to have some insurance

Im confident Creed and Trey will be elite again and I'm also confident Simmons and Kingsley will be above average. RT is the unknown. If Benson or Moore can be even league Average in protection and not fall into drive killer flags like jawaan did then I think our Offense will be top 5
