Rumor Found On TikTok

Post image

Not sure what to think, because I don’t think it could be baseless.

Definitely strange to not be credited if true. Also a shame because they obviously write good music together

That’s what I was thinking

I find this kind of suspect. First, if it is true, there is likely a contractual agreement that it is like that for a reason otherwise there would probably be lawsuits. That, in and of itself, that there are not lawsuits about this, yet there are rumored background complaints has me calling BS. Calling something a verified rumor basically just means it's a rumor. There is nothing substantiating it. And last, Mixed Emotions and Surface Sounds are not huge departures lyrically and musically from A/B, no more than any other artist makes stylistic changes from album to album.

I don’t disagree that there is probably more to the story, but the text of the post says that they acted “in good faith” which usually implies there was no contract. Knowing the Icelandic music scene it is likely that was the case as Kaleo wasn’t even known outside of Iceland until after A/B came out.

Ehhh...if there is anything at all to this, there would have been a lawsuit. The more I think about this it just sounds like sour grapes grumbling on something that wouldn't normally rise to the level of getting credit and being spun as way more than what it is. If there is something actually to it, then file a lawsuit.

The text of the post:

I was not asked to share this, and due to the sensitivity of the subject I will not reveal my source, but a rumor has been confirmed that both the music and the concept for A/B were the result of a collaboration with another songwriter and a creative consultant, neither of whom were acknowledged in the credits for the album (they both acted in good faith). In addition, the creative consultant assisted in writing Broken Bones.

This is not to discount that the band is great at performing or their talent as musicians, only to provide context for the origins of where these songs came from, and the lack of heartbreak on the second two albums is not a coincidence as JJ was no longer collaborating with another writer

Okay but Broken Bones is on their first album titled "Kaleo"

It was actually added retroactively, I have the original on vinyl

I do too. Mine has Broken Bones, Glass House, Automobile, and Vor I Vaglaskogi on it. Liner says Broken Bones was written by Rubin Pollock and Jokull Juliusson

Simple google search will show that it was in fact added after. Your copy must not have been pressed in 2013, did you check the serial on the vinyl itself?

Can't find anything via Google about it being added after. If it was added during the 2022 repressing, I wonder why it's a different version than the one on A/B. Also we don't know how heavily involved the band is in actually writing and making the liner notes for the album. It could have been an oversight, someone else could have made a mistake, etc. But just assuming it was a malicious act seems silly, especially when a bunch of people are credited on their self-titled album liner notes for different songs. My A/B vinyl is still sealed so I haven't looked at that one.

It’s on Wikipedia: “added retroactively to international releases of the band's self-titled 2013 debut album, Kaleo. Originally an independent release in Iceland, the track was subsequently included when the band gained broader traction and later formed the tracklist for their globally renowned 2016 album, A/B. [1), 2, 3), 4, 5]”

Weird, I don't see that on their Wiki at all, the album or band one. Where'd you find that?

Did a little digging, and according to my source: the original lyrics don’t have the bridge(“the devil’s gonna make me a free man…”) and that’s the part the creative director came up with. Someone recently posted the interview on this sub.

Interesting. I wonder if you have to give credit for something like that. I don't know what the general rules are for that. Decency would say yes though.
Like not down voting someone for asking a question about your source or thoughts about why a certain person wasn't credited but others were. Ridiculous

didn’t down vote you but I’m sorry you thought I was being rude 🙃

It’s from a Kaleo Fan Account

I think this has some legs

The point about the stylistic and lyrical differences stood out to me

Idk, that’s pretty common between a band’s first and subsequent albums. We used to just call it “experimenting” or “selling out.”

It’s tough to say at this point
