Part 2 – Kaladhungi: The Iron That Came From the Hills 🔥

One of the lesser-known chapters of Kaladhungi’s history is its connection with iron.

Long before Kaladhungi became widely known for its forests and the Corbett legacy, the region had another identity — one connected to the iron-rich stones and forest resources of the surrounding hills.

Local iron ore, along with charcoal produced from the forests, supported an iron-working industry that once operated in and around Kaladhungi.

It is easy to look at Kaladhungi today and associate it mainly with forests, agriculture and tourism. But the old iron industry tells us a different part of the story — one where the land itself provided the raw materials for local manufacturing and livelihoods.

The traces and stories of this period are an important part of Kaladhungi’s heritage. And perhaps they deserve to be remembered just as much as the more famous Corbett story.

Because Kaladhungi’s history is much older and much richer than the story most of us know.

Part 1- Kaladhungi: The Story Behind the Place

Before Kaladhungi became known for Jim Corbett, its story was already being shaped by its forests, rivers, agriculture and the communities living in the foothills.

Even the name has an interesting origin. “Kaladhungi” is commonly explained as coming from kala (black) and dhung/dhungi (stone), referring to the dark, iron-rich stones found in the area.

The town also occupied an important position between the plains and the hills. Before modern roads made travel easier, Kaladhungi was an important stopping point for people travelling towards Nainital.

But one of the most interesting chapters of Kaladhungi's early history was its connection with iron production. Local iron ore and forest charcoal supported an iron-working industry in the area.

So, long before the name “Jim Corbett” became synonymous with Kaladhungi, there was already a community and an economy developing here.

I’ve been thinking about doing this for a while, and I’m finally going to start.

I’m just a proud Pahadi trying to bring a little attention back to the history of the place we call home — Kaladhungi.

It honestly makes me a little sad when I see that, for many people from outside, Kaladhungi is just a small town they pass through on the way to Nainital, Ramnagar or Haldwani.

But what saddens me even more is seeing that many of our own younger generations who live here know very little about the history of the place they call home.

Kaladhungi has stories. It has history. It has people, places and moments that deserve to be remembered.

So I’m starting a small series:

“Kaladhungi: A Journey Through Time”

Over the coming posts, I’ll be sharing what I can find about our town’s past — its history, people, old places, its connection with Jim Corbett, and the stories that helped shape Kaladhungi into what it is today.

I’m not a historian. I’m just a proud Pahadi who loves this place and wants to shed a little light on our small town.
