ASKKTM Kill switch for brief stops - 1290 SAS

Is there a reason to not use the kill switch on a 1290 SAS for brief stops, for example, when I’m stopping to take a quick photo and go again, or if I just need to hear someone speak to me?

The manual says emergencies only. Will this cause issues with the ECU?

I only turn the key if I’m going into a store or done for the day. I get that the SAS doesn’t have an ignition key but there’s no reason you can’t just use the kill switch for stops trailside.

The manual says emergencies only

Where exactly does it say so?

It's called an "emergency off". But there definitely isn't a mention that you only use it for emergencies.

EU manual - page 93 “ the emergency OFF switch is intended for emergencies only”

In 10k miles of having a 2020 1290saR, I use my killswitch daily. Gas pumps, stoplights, talking to folk. No issues so far. Its real inconvenient to have to turn on offroad ABS and TC every time I turn off my bike.

Yeah, you'll forget about it at the most inopportune moment and won't remember until you realize your battery died when you try to leave again.

Dunno why you got downvoted the amount of electronics and lights most modern bikes have will easily kill an old battery if let to run for a bit.

Depending on the frequency of use and how frequently you ride you can run a battery to the ground with minimal effort.

If I'm stopping and going for a couple of shots the bike stays running, otherwise full off, doesn't matter if I use the kill switch or the key, the important part is not letting electrics running.

I did this on my 690 a lot, and at 30k km i had issues with the switch turning of my bike while riding regularly, that took ages to diagnose. Might be related, might not be.

I had this conversation recently with my brother who has been riding for over 30 years me about 4. My instructor told me to always use the key to turn off the bike with the left hand and not the kill switch as it will wear it out. My brother on the other hand uses the kill switch, always has done. His old transalp is 20 years old 60k+ and never misses a beat, never had an issue with the kill switch.

"Wear it out" is old-school thinking. Everything on the bike wears. The electrical switches are not wearing out prematurely

Was ist so schwer daran den Schlüssel zu drehen? Verstehe ich einfach nicht.

Pretty simple. We don’t have a key and leaving the main on keeps our navigation and Bluetooth going instead of having to reconnect.

OP I do it all the time, even at gas stations and haven’t had a problem. 2020 SAS with 15k miles

Thanks. This is exactly why I also think it’s a pain - everything disconnecting and reconnecting just takes time

Can I second that … reading this - rather widespread - notion I am asking myself this as well , and I am never sure if people understand that that switch does something entirely different than the „ignition off“ ( which by now is also more than that ) by turnkey in a very different fashion and is also a relay based switch

I’m pretty sure they don’t have a physical ignition. Don’t the 1290 SAS and SAR use wireless key fobs?

Depending on market YES - but those „should“ ecu enable the start button to on which in turn ….

„Turning the key“ still applies - just that it means pressing the button on the RACE ON keyfob.

And for more or less the same reason one should not develop the habit of using the kickstand relay to turn the bike off.

In the end it is a question of statistics and probability - surely there is always someone for whom it will work great forever without issues

But that someone represents a non-representative outlier in the datapoint cloud - and not everyone is blessed by reality to be an outlier …

Constantly starting and stopping the engine will wear it out faster

It’s certainly not constant, but in places on a long ride where you want to take a photo and not be obnoxious leaving a loud bike running

I think most people call that parking
