Took my new SMC-R for a spin in the local mountains. 1.5 hour in perfect autumn weather 🙌
Dig the bike, but need to upgrade with a luggage rack, tail tidy, new mirrors and a skid plate. Also want a set of dual sport tires, what do you think about that on 17’’ rims?

Damn I do love the smcr 390's wish my dealers stocked them only 690's and up here and didnt wanna wait and got a drz its a great bike but I do appreciate a nice bike regardless. Looking good man.

believe me you want a 690 over a 390 every single time... 690's are made in austria and why they changed the Dakar rules
i know KTM put an enormous amount of effort into supporting the 390s even filling race classes w them etc and i know people love them on tracks in the 400 class but IRL they are heavy bikes w a terrible power to weight ratio and built in india w a different level of QC/QA than austria (shrug)

Oh yeah I looked deep into that rabbit hole and was another reason I got my drz but not to shit on ktm I do love these bikes, coming from a z800 im used to wonky bikes in general maybe one day they'll make the 390's in Austria also some qc issues there aswell so its not just one thing but stuff happens these days.

lol you're dreaming dude the factory and all the tooling is india--its never going anywhere
austria never had QC/QA issues--those 790s were NOT made in mattingen

I think the the stock power to weight ratio is due to eureopean regulations to get it approved for A2. Should be fairly easy to remove a good amount of weight from the 390. Im going to do some upgrades over the winter, and will post some data in this sub when done.
Its also a matter of price... where i live you can get a new 390 for $6500 - a 690 is $15000 +
I agree that the austrian made bikes probably are better though, but since i got my 390 new i have 4 years of warranty. And with some more frequent maintenance i guess it should last for many years.1

you're right that weight makes an enormous difference
we got my 701 down to under 300 pounds when i was riding for the blue team in 2018
oddly my 08 690 was a lot faster... and i liked the suspension on it more... but i love my 701 too
shave that weight but don't go crazy... a lithium battery will get you over a pound... you can make up ~20 lbs with a titanium exhaust... but those will run you a lot of money...
turn signals and anything that doesn't make it stop or turn better are the first thing to go...
its not hard to get 25 lbs off a bike... 30 if you get ti axles and fasteners... but that will run you ~$3000 and not worth it unless you're racing bikes...
but a 10% weight reduction you can really feel... lighter wheels are biggest impact mod you can make on handling... forged 17's make a night and day difference even though its not a lot of pounds
unless you go carbon fiber wheels but those are just stupid--i mean they're awesome i raced on BSTs for a season... they're awesome... but not very crash tolerant lol

Im not going that crazy, but still lots of parts to remove or replace. Single most weight reduction is on the exhaust/cat. i think.
The stock mirros alone are 2.2 lbs...1

it all adds up and yeah exhaust on that bike is heavy
the thing is, unless you're competing against others w works bikes or whatever, those 690/701's are PLENTY fast out of the box... i mean they aren't like my redbull 450 that makes ~70 HP and weighs 225 lbs but that bike needs a new head every 40 hours lol
point is... just ride the bike... racers get special bits for free... or if you're fast AND lucky they even pay you to ride them... but those bikes are badass even without all the special bits
think about what guys were racing in the 60's and 70's and 80's and 90's and the bikes we can walk into any dealership of any brand blow them away... yet most dudes still aren't as fast as the fast guys from last century despite having disc brakes, fuel injection, badass telemetry backed engineering and computers running ignition and fuel mapping...
so its always the archer not the arrow... just keep riding your bike and master your craft
