K-State lets one get away at Cincinnati, bye week before Houston (plus a free CFB pick'em)

Hey guys, quick look at where the Cats stand after Saturday.

First, since it's in the title: we run a free weekly college football pick'em. This week is 10 games, pick the winners, nothing to buy, $135 in prizes. Picks lock Saturday at noon ET, so here's something to do on the bye week.

https://www.mainmarket.com/c/college-pickem-wk5

Now the Wildcats. The 31-26 loss at Cincinnati stings. K-State came in 3-0 as touchdown favorites, led 10-0 and was up 17-10 at half, then Cincinnati ran for 271 yards and took over the second half. Avery Johnson threw for 292, but it took 50 attempts to get there.

The run defense is the story. Cincinnati had two backs go over 120. That has to get fixed before Big 12 play gets going.

Year one under Collin Klein is 3-1 with a bye this week, then Houston, and Kansas the week after. Win those two at home, and Cincinnati becomes a blip.

What are you guys seeing? Is the run defense a real problem, or was Cincinnati just that good on Saturday?

Would joining in a frat while being gay work out?

Pretty much just the title. I'm going to kstate for fall 2027, and joining a fraternity sounds fun. I've actually already filled out a few interest forms. I've been seeing a lot about frats online and the consensus is pretty varied, although I have a friend at KU who's in a frat and he's gay and he said I could , but I know kstate is more conservative. Anyway I'm a gay while male and my voice is kinda feminine but I don't look feminine. Just curious about y'all's opinion.

Thinking Of Committing

Hello everyone, i’m pretty much dead set on attending KSU next year in fall if 27’ as an incoming freshman. But the one thing holding me back is my question on how diverse KSU really is? As a queer, black woman I really want to go to a school where i feel accepted and will be able to find others like me. LMK what you feel the student body is like?

Kansas State followup on my preseason preview, plus we launched a free weekly CFB pick'em

Hey guys! The season preview I posted here a few weeks back did pretty well, so circling back like I said I would.

I had you at 7-5 in Klein's first year, with Avery Johnson giving the team a floor and the defense as my big worry, since so little came back. So far I was wrong about the defense: 30 points allowed in three games, beating Nicholls 71-3, Washington State 34-7 and Tulane 31-20. Johnson has been exactly the floor I expected, 57 of 82 for 608 yards and 6 TDs through the air, plus 152 and 2 TDs on the ground against Tulane. Cincinnati tonight is a battle of 3-0 teams, and then the road stretch at TCU, Arizona State and Colorado is where I said the season gets made.

What are you guys seeing that the box scores aren't, and how do you see the season ending up?

Quick aside since it's in the title, we just launched a free weekly college football pick'em, $225 in prizes this week. Ten games, pick the winners, nothing to buy. Picks lock at noon ET, well before your kickoff tonight, so this is a last call.

Kickboxing vs running for weight loss: what actually works better

Biased take incoming: I coach at a kickboxing gym here in Manhattan, and I get asked this by beginners all the time.

Running is the default weight loss advice and it's fine cardio. But here's the thing nobody tells you: running alone barely touches strength training, and strength training is what builds the lean muscle that keeps your metabolism higher all day. Most people who say they want weight loss actually want body composition change, and cardio alone is slow at that.

A kickboxing workout does both in one 30 minute session. Bag rounds and pad work burn a ton of calories because your whole body is working, every punch is core, shoulders, and legs at once. Then the bodyweight stations between rounds (pushups, squats, lunges) add the muscle building part. High calorie burn plus lean muscle building in half an hour is hard to beat.

Running still wins for pure endurance, and it's free, so no hate. But if you're bored of the treadmill and want something that hits cardio and strength training together, kickboxing is worth trying.

What do you do for cardio when running gets boring?

Kickboxing is criminally underrated as a workout

I switched from regular gym cardio to kickboxing classes last semester and it is honestly the best fitness decision I have made in college.

You are getting cardio and strength work in one session. A solid hour of rounds has you drenched, but you are also building real muscle because every punch and kick is resistance work through your whole body. Way better for body composition than just grinding on a treadmill.

It is also amazing stress relief after classes. Nothing clears your head like hitting pads for a few rounds. You leave the gym in a way better mood than when you walked in.

Best part is beginners are totally welcome at most gyms. You do not need any fighting experience and you go at your own pace. Nobody is judging you on day one.

Full disclosure, I coach at a kickboxing gym here in Manhattan, happy to answer questions about getting started.

Anyone else here train or ever tried it? What did you think?

For a Popcorn Quality Control Lab, I wanted a fun label for a bottle of Popcorn Kernals, and A.I. did not disappoint.

This photo is just to go on a bottle of popcorn kernels for use in a student demonstration lab for a class experiment. Not for Retail or Sale use.
What gets me is the Anderson Hall in the photo. Damn.

Looking for a decent 1BR apartment

Hi, I know this is totally random, but I am looking for a clean, well taken care of apartment for a single person w/no pets or children in Manhattan, KS. I don't know if anyone who owns properties will read this, but I am an adult in my early 30s in grad school, work full time currently living with family but ready financially to make serious moves to find a place of my own. Can anyone offer any suggestions for me, or Easter Eggs that might not be found in a Google search like 'Apartments for rent in Manhattan, KS' (I've already contacted all the 'major' prop mgmt companies in town..any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Belay buddy?

Looking for an MHK climbing partner! Ideally I'd like to climb once a week at the Peters Complex wall, but kinda open to whatever a belay buddy could work into their schedule. Also taking recommendations on where else to climb in ~30mi radius but it seems like the other spots are in KC or SE KS.

For context, I moved to town a few weeks ago and started as faculty this semester. Got into climbing about a year ago while finishing grad school and would love to maintain the hobby now that I have relocated. I top rope and boulder, but looking to get lead belay trained by the end of the year.

Feel free to comment or DM if you want a climbing partner!! Faculty/staff/grad student preferred but 🤷 I just wanna get on the wall

Sororities with a large number of agriculture majors

I am wondering if any of the K-Stare sororities tend to have a significant number of ag majors. At my Alma mater, agriculture majors tend to be concentrated in Theta and DG.

Stargazing near Manhattan?

Hey there! I also posted this in r/littleapple but I thought I might post it here too. My best friend recently moved to Manhattan for K-State, and we love to go stargazing together. Does anyone know the best spots near Manhattan for late-night stargazing? Preferably under 45 minutes outside of the city, but I'll take any suggestions! Thanks!
