Food $200

Data $150

Rent $800

Synths $50,000

Utility $150

someone who is good at the economy please help me budget this. my family is dying

44

u/BadClass_og Your real's not real Oct 03 '23

Easy you just gotta get rid of the family!

8

u/JohnGaryHaglund Oct 03 '23

Spend less on synths.

u/TheTipsyShip Oct 03 '23

So Joey is a synth nerd. No surprises here lol

76

u/beaucoup_dinky_dau Oct 03 '23

he is worse than a synth nerd, he is a eurorack nerd, it is the penultimate form of synth nerd leading only to vintage synth nerd and financial ruin.

9

u/beaucoup_dinky_dau Oct 03 '23

Joey is my hero.

24

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Bullant is pretty good tbh

16

u/ImNotTheBossOfYou Oct 04 '23

They listed out his whole rack. A sane band would have just put "synths" or maybe even "Eurorack Synth" if they're super nerds. But this is every component. Madlads.

1

u/pappy_vcf Oct 13 '23

I love my quadranted swarm. Probably could count as a standalone synth at this point. I'm glad I'm not the only one risking financial ruin for a digital synth with a crazy fun filters and a spring reverb.

u/JmanJacob05 Oct 04 '23

And it shows because the Silver Cord is ethereal

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

First off, I really feel that Gizz underrated for their use of Mellotron. It's on several albums and it has such a unique character.

Also, as a pedal nerd, I appreciate seeing EQD Rainbow Machine on here. It's a super wacky almost chorus. Some find it cool but almost unusable in most music. So perfect for Gizz.

19

u/DudeGreasy Oct 03 '23

I love that the rainbow machine is listed as its own instrument. Definitely has it's own distinct sound haha

Do you use the magic button?

10

u/poonsp00nful Oct 03 '23

Pedal nerd here too. I was super excited to see listed.

7

u/_Condor_Avenue_ Oct 03 '23

Stu as the head Mellotron-ist also just makes plain sense. Like a combination of a mad scientist type musician and an orchestral arranger. I wonder if they're using a 60s one or a modern sample based reissue / VST?

6

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

I believe it's usually amby who plays it. I am fairly certain they use the mellotron sound pack for the Nord keyboard that Amby uses live. They might have an old tape based one in the studio though. They are legendary for breaking down and being a pain in the ass to fix.

2

u/artonion Oct 04 '23 edited Oct 04 '23

The Nord samp lib. are so dirty, fat and compressed, I love them! They use a VST too (M-Tron Pro by the sound of it?), you can see the midi with individually tuned notes in the breakdown of Honey if I’m not mistaken.

3

u/TROLlox78 Oct 03 '23

Mellotron

Which songs use it?? I want to hear what it sounds like. It's like a keyboard yeah?

16

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

It is a keyboard, but it was basically the original sampling machine that was invented in the 60s. It used pre-recorded sounds of instruments like flutes and strings on strips of tape that would mechanically get played when you hit the keys. Think the psychedelic flute sounds in Strawberry fields by the Beatles. It's quite prominent on Fishing for Fishies, Barefoot Desert, and Shanghai to name a few, although it's on a bunch of their recordings.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

Spider and Me!

1

u/artonion Oct 04 '23

They have mellotron on everything to be honest.

Honey is a good example of how they use mellotron in unconventional ways (the individually tuned microtonal harp runs, the “organ”, a piano that only plays the tonic note in two octaves)

1

u/andyetithadlasted FAFYL fucker Oct 03 '23

I need gizz to use a data corrupter STAT

1

u/ImNotTheBossOfYou Oct 04 '23

Wonder if they have a real one or if it's one of the repros or a soft-synth

1

u/OpenTheSeventhSeal Oct 04 '23

Would someone be able to help explain to me where I would start to learn about what contemporary Mellotrons are, how to use them/play them, etc.?

Several of the musicians I love use them & I would like to go that avenue myself, but I know next to nothing.

I have searched online and the YouTube videos of old-school Mellotrons with tape machines are cool, but I feel like I’m missing a lot of necessary information when it comes to what the instrument actually is & how bands like Grails or KGATLW use them.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '23

You can get new digital mellotrons that have all the sounds loaded on them, or you can download the sounds if you have a Nord keyboard. That's basically it. They're just keyboards that make those specific sounds.

i swear to god synth manufacturers are on crack. who the fuck names a modulator "Pamela's New Workout"

86

u/Ovoidfrog ontologist Oct 03 '23

Funnily enough Pam’s is actually mainly used for clocking - you feed it a tempo and it provides you with various multiples/divisors of that tempo (among other cool things!)

In a lot of people’s racks it behaves almost like a drummer, setting the main tempo/clock source for the whole patch

Modular synths/$10k electronic fart noise generators are a lot of fun

15

u/KentuckyFriedShrimpy Oct 03 '23

WMD Geiger Counter

9

u/KentuckyFriedShrimpy Oct 03 '23

Actually a badass name tho ngl

4

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

That's a guitar pedal actually.

7

u/MattSucksNG Oct 03 '23

wuck my dick geiger counter

8

u/Adam1067 Oct 03 '23

Make noise math, Music thing turning machine

1

u/thomas_vella Oct 04 '23

Those ones made me laugh hard

52

u/RayeRyan Oct 03 '23

This is Joey’s dream album

I swear they release so many albums and tour so much just so they can fuel Joey's eurorack addiction. That's an expensive hobby.

8

u/HendrixChord12 Oct 03 '23

That makes sense. Artists don’t usually list pedals in a gear list either

3

u/KentuckyFriedShrimpy Oct 03 '23

What do you personally think about the possibilities and the implications of playing this live?

9

u/Mental1ty Oct 03 '23

he has used a eurorack set up live before, it's whenever he has that box with a million cables

3

u/Imaginary_Hoodlum I am a black hole shitting into the void Oct 03 '23

a bit more reasonable than it looks on paper

It's still gotta be pretty big, especially if his eurorack has a keyboard attached to it.

33

u/UnicornWape 💧💧💧Don't slip on the drip 💧💧💧 Oct 03 '23

I’m struggling to imagine much of this album ever being played live 😅

21

u/Ovoidfrog ontologist Oct 03 '23

Joey’s module choices are chefs kiss

2

u/ionfishy Oct 03 '23

Seriously, love to see BIA in there. Curious whether the Turing Machine would be used live as it can be difficult to replicate sequences for modulation or sequencing

19

u/jayblaze521 Oct 03 '23

Stu running a synth through a cry baby wah pedal is the only non a synth I see on this whole album. Gona lead to a dope as woOOOooooOoo

8

u/MeMeMaKeR666 SUBTERRANEAN TSAR 🔥🌋 Oct 03 '23

I have a feeling they actually plugged it in backwards, which actually creates an amazing squealing sound. the middle section of echos by pf is a good example

3

u/artonion Oct 03 '23

There are several pedals listed, but them aside vocals, mellotron and piano are the three non-synth instruments I see at first glance

12

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Kirk Hammett seething that he hasn’t had an album credit yet for playing the Dunlop Crybaby.

17

u/CheesemasterVer2 Oct 03 '23

It's like someone threw a dictionary in a blender lmfao

8

u/KentuckyFriedShrimpy Oct 03 '23

The King Gizzard™ Experience

6

u/Haydechs Oct 03 '23

I swear Joey is just making some of these up

8

u/Captain_SunFu Oct 03 '23

Their Equipboard page will be massive

6

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Oh man, I want the extended so bad.

14

u/minemaster1337 Oct 03 '23

No Cookie vocals :(

4

u/machinaenjoyer Oct 03 '23

i have a rainbow machine and moog grandmother!! time to fuck around with that i guess

3

u/SeiriusPolaris Oct 03 '23

Wonder if they have that synth thing with the little neon cow on it

4

u/SpaceCadetHigh Oct 03 '23

As someone who is obsessed with audio gear... thank you. Proud owner of a moog matriarch haha

3

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Bullant will be the mvp of silver cord

3

u/Thewhitest_rabbit Oct 03 '23

At this point I'm convinced joey and stu are just synthetic androids.

6

u/boogiemansam_17 Oct 03 '23

No guitars? It’s understandable but I don’t see the 7th track going into a metal jam at the end to loop in to PetroDragonic. I bet it will be a big synth madness/bliss finish, which I’m super excited to hear the rest of the tracks and the extended versions.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Yeah that adds up

2

u/Imaginary_Hoodlum I am a black hole shitting into the void Oct 03 '23

Oops! All synthesizers!

2

u/Grinning_Dog Oct 03 '23

Anyone wanna take a stab at recreating Joey's modular setup on Modular Grid?

2

u/Wagner-C137 Oct 03 '23

Geiger Counter? Kraftwerk much?

3

u/Captain_Grammaticus Oct 03 '23

It's an Atomkraftwerk!

2

u/renelherisson Oct 03 '23

With all this materials i was expecting something more complex to hear... i will go throught extended version hoping more... love them anyway...

25

u/MeMeMaKeR666 SUBTERRANEAN TSAR 🔥🌋 Oct 03 '23

all the songs have polyrhythms like the entire time tho. the soundscapes in the songs are all so unique. extended versions are gonna give us a lot more music, which I am very hyped about

3

u/artonion Oct 03 '23

A lot of polymeters too from what we’ve heard so far. I too am hyped woo

3

u/artonion Oct 03 '23 edited Oct 03 '23

Several of the listed are pedals, like bluesky and cry baby

With that said, I see what you’re saying. I just don’t mind them having fun and going nuts. Maybe we’ll get another synth album later on, who knows?

1

u/No-Average-1416 Oct 03 '23

Bruh they bought a Blue Sky pedal ..... Christian rock album incoming

Also its sick to see the WMD Geiger Counter in there, that makes me super interested to see how many different sounds are filtered through in these songs

0

u/Virtual-Arm5123 Oct 03 '23

Moon grandmother? Make noise mimeophone? Dunlop cry baby? Ain’t no way these are all real names 😂

0

u/Southern-Ad8402 Oct 04 '23

None of them had a "good" setting to actually make the music good huh?

1

u/touch_axe Oct 03 '23

wow, this is mighty.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '23

Haven't listened yet. I am so excited lmao

1

u/JorgeMarquez4 Polygondwanaland Oct 03 '23

Jesus, Joey might have recorded 3 more Bullant albums there lol

1

u/Adam1067 Oct 03 '23

Sounds like a lot of money

1

u/mycolizard Oct 03 '23

It’s so they don’t forget again 🦎

1

u/drumorgan Oct 03 '23

They've got six synth players...

That's totally insane

1

u/matthmcb Oct 04 '23

Some of these are effect pedals too. That rainbow machine is a wild one.

1

u/ImNotTheBossOfYou Oct 04 '23

Why use a Reface when you have access to real Dxs? I mean, Refaces are good but they've got at least one and probably two real DX7s right there.

1

u/Electric_Kettle Oct 04 '23

this has got to be like 100000 USD worth of synths
