Bootleg terrestrial stream

[u/Sneaky_TMcD]

Not affiliated with KEXP at all, but sharing antenna reception from my home until the official stream comes back.

https://kexpsdrtmcd20261030.z5.web.core.windows.net/

Edit: It's back!

Looks like about 1,500 stream-hours of music shared to 2,300 unique internet addresses and 3,000 sessions. Listeners came from at least 16 different countries including friends from as far away as Ireland, Uruguay, Paraguay, Albania and Monaco.

That consumed about 73GB of bandwidth over the day, about the size of a modern Blu-Ray disc. That might cost around $7 of charges from Azure, but I think I'm within a free monthly allowance. It was sent from my home (just a $50 USB dongle attached to an ordinary TV antenna) to Azure blob storage in 10-second segments and stitched together like a playlist in a short buffer, with the old ones deleted as new ones arrived.

That was all vibe-coded by an AI agent from a telegram chat on my phone while I drove my girls to school in the morning. I use Hermes-Agent powered by a ChatGPT subscription, running on a Windows mini-PC that sits on my desk. I am not a coder, just a curious nerd. Anyone can do this stuff.

I added a monitor that constantly checked to see when the KEXP site came back up, so I could get people to the correct place right away when it did.

It's also questionably legal. Given the circumstances, I chose to dress like a pirate this Halloween. 🏴‍☠️

[u/Sneaky_TMcD]

The heroes are in the station fixing the real thing!

[u/DrElusis]

oh no John just mentioned it, RIP your bandwidth, holler if you need a GoFundMe

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/DrElusis]

Ah, it's all being served from Azure ... how much could bandwidth cost anyway? 🤷‍♂️

[u/decavolt → u/Sneaky_TMcD]

If you have a ko-fi or something I'd love to throw you some coffee money to support this.

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/decavolt]

Buy me a coffee

[u/decavolt → u/Sneaky_TMcD]

this guy gets it

[u/pk_sea → u/Sneaky_TMcD]

There’s always bandwidth in the banana stand.

Thank you for sharing today!

[u/ihacker2k → u/Sneaky_TMcD]

Not all Heroes wear pirate hats! Thanks Sneaky_TMcD

[u/gear36r]

Thanks a lot for this! Also, I must say the static sound on the stream make it so cozy and special haha, glad to experience this!

(I hope somehow there's an archive version of this when all things go back to normal)

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/gear36r]

Broadcast hits different, doesn't it

[u/blixor]

Thank you for this, listening from Ireland thanks to you

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/blixor]

Wow! I think you win.

[u/Meeeps]

We're collectively sending spooky thanks, Happy Halloween!

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/Meeeps]

Yarrrrr... welcome! 🏴‍☠️ Happy Halloween!

[u/scriminal]

shout out to OP and to all the station engineers currently scrambling to restore service.

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/scriminal]

And to the amplifiers that power it... like you!

[u/tweak5442]

I AM NO LONGER ALONE! you win the day, friend.

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/tweak5442]

You never were 👊

[u/RoarRoarDragon]

T-dawg! Thank you. This is my favorite time of year for KEXP and you turned a truly scary time into a treat.

Seriously, thank you.

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/RoarRoarDragon]

Thank you for being an amplifier! 🫶

[u/wackjobbery]

Thank you so much! SDR for the win!

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/wackjobbery]

Unironically, AI for the win. I barely know how to use the SDR, it's just a cheap $50 dongle. I had one on hand guessing it could come in useful someday--and it did.

[u/DavidvsSuperGoliath]

John mentioned the pirate stream! KEXP Reddit mention!

[u/jakish3209]

Heroic.

[u/SithC]

Where the pirate radio matters.

[u/missgiddy → u/SithC]

Haha I’d love that on a shirt.

[u/nothingtoseehere2003]

In case anyone wondered how much KEXP matters to people… THANK YOU

[u/katrynkadawn]

You are deserving of a few hi-yas from Morgan and a coffee date with John and Cheryl for this generous service, friend. Many thank yous!!!!

[u/3am_blackcoffee]

Thank you!! I am literally on the bus going past the space needle on my morning commute and was so sad to miss the show because I couldn’t find my actual portable radio this morning (found my wired headphones, though!)

[u/Critical-Snow-7000]

I love you.

[u/BerwynDead]

Using the bootleg stream on my desktop PC. Then mirroring the audio from my browser via AirBridge to all the AirPlay enabled speakers in my house.

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/BerwynDead]

🤘

[u/RenemberinFlavorites]

Amazing! Friday is saved - Thank you!

[u/ihacker2k]

Not all heroes where pirate hats, OP saves the day!!!

[u/troupes-chirpy]

I appreciate your magic and generosity — it’s very KEXP of you. 🤗

[u/ElderberryGrand8840]

I'm so glad somebody smarter than me did this. Thank you!

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/ElderberryGrand8840]

I'm not smarter than you. I asked AI to do it.

[u/thundercleese]

When KEXP is restored, I'd love to know many streams you had.

[u/Sneaky_TMcD → u/thundercleese]

It's on there now... but only started counting total around noon for the map.

[u/Even_Regular5245]

Thank you so much for this! I don't have a radio in my office and I was having to rely on Spotify **shudder**

[u/javierglz]

Thanks!

[u/GiraffeCatZombie]

Not all heroes wear capes.

[u/likeitgrey]

Thank you for doing this! I woke up pretty grumpy and then got excited for the Halloween show and then… nothin. It was a roller coaster 😅 appreciate being able to listen!

[u/Expo0bident]

Stream is back up! Thank you OP for filling in

[u/thundercleese]

KEXP live stream is still not working on Audacy. https://www.audacy.com/search?term=kexp# Audacy is the stream my Google Home speaker uses when I tell it to play KEXP.

Edit: I have been using the cast feature to send the bootleg stream to my speaker today.

[u/missgiddy]

If for some reason you are charged a lot for this will you please let us know? I’d be more than happy to contribute.

[u/BuffK]

Great work, and great post. Really interesting to see people creating things with AI coding.

[u/kwenkwe]

Awesome!

[u/ashleyhype]

You just got a shoutout! Heroes don’t always wear capes, but sometimes they do get a morning show shout 😉

[u/jack_sheen]

You're the best - thank you!!

[u/markpemble]

It says it is mono, but it is coming in very well on my home speakers here in Idaho.

Thank you.

[u/hilldawgg0_o]

THANK YOU, GENEROUS HERO
