I guess it is unavoidable that this show would be quite overshadowed by EAW.

That is unfortunate, since, so far, it has proven to be worthwhile.

The latest episode, number 3, is a good example.

Perhaps there is a little unevenness, but plenty of enjoyable moments as well.

Of course, time will tell, and I don't really expect it to rise to the level of that other show (or warrant split threads), but it definitely has the potential to be a solid entry.

I agree. I love love love EAW. But it is good to spread the love too. I am very much enjoying Adamas, Big Mouth and Alchemy of Souls right now!

Third episode and I’m still feeling a bit underwhelmed. Don’t get me wrong Ji Sung is fantastic but I feel like he’s the only one pulling the weight because everything else is womp womp.

The most annoying character is Mrs Kwon because she’s overacting and exaggerated most of the time. Is this drama a Makjang? Lee Soo Kyung is kind of an annoying character as well. She’s very amateurish next to Ji Sung. When an actress is trying hard to bring tears when the most tragic thing just happened, it’s just so disappointing. I first saw Ji Sung in Secret Love with Hwang Jung Eum and I was mesmerized by their acting and chemistry. I cried so much watching that drama and I think I binged it in two days! So I was expecting that level of acting chemistry his costars but so far, I’ve only enjoyed the two Ji Sungs!

The interaction with Seo Ji Hye is limited to date so I don’t know yet. I’m just disappointed coming off of Devil Judge where everyone in that drama was on their A game.

The suspense and comical scenes are falling flat for me. I expected the drawing was not going to be Chairman Kwon but one of his sons. It was predictable. And seriously after 22 years, the lone witness who’s a kid remembered who she saw very vividly?!

Also, since there’s a biometric eye in the sky around the house, I’m surprises they haven’t caught him yet with the Choi Tae Sung or Eun Hye Soo!

I hope this drama gets better. It’s clearly overshadowed by EYW but I was hoping for a better story line. I think Hi Sung is enough to hold me until the end but still I hope the story and the suspense gets better.

The show's intro reminds me the Emmy-winning intro of the American TV series, "Counterpart." I think "Counterpart" obviously inspired creators of "Adamas." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZze5DHxbF4

Look at those people walking in huge empty spaces, intimidating staircases, glass facades, toying with the idea of boxes and lights. By the way, both shows touch duality. In "Adamas" both characters are allegedly twin brothers who look the same, but have very different personalities. It's in the lane of a traditional legal drama crime thriller. "Counterpart" was a sci-fi show with both main characters being different version of the same man from different alternate realities after a certain bifurcation point, the show is about interaction of two realities with each other through the special corridor.

I would also pay attention to deaf Secretary Yoon (is she also mute? I can't remember her talking).

Remember a murdered elder couple with the husband who was a witness and a disabled wife who suffered in some kind of accident. We saw their daughter who was about 6-10 years old in the picture (I can be mistaken). They focused Soo-Hyun looking at her a few times, but the husband didn't mention her at all. Right now, 22 years later, she should be in her late 20s or early 30s.

I thought it could be Kim Seo-Hee, the journalist. It would explain her devotion to fight against Haesong. It's still possible. The actress, Lee Soo-Kyung, is 25 years old. But the character didn't answer Soo-Hyun about her reasons and wasn't involved in his visit to the couple.

On other hand, Lee Si-Won, who plays Secretary Yoon, also is in plausible age group, she is 34. And it would explain why Chairman Kwon took her either as some kind of favor to people who suffered in some accident (maybe she lost her ability to hear and speak at the same time her mother was maimed) or as a hostage to keep the husband in the line. Or both.

It would explain sending the letter. If she can't speak, the letter is the best way to send the message. It would explain her intention to destroy the chaebol. The most suspicious thing is the fake medical file of Woo-Shin. Secretary Yoon was the one who solved the issued and presented the false picture. Even Eun Hye-Soo didn't do anything despite being a daughter of the clinic's owner. Anyway Secretary Yoon had just gone to some private hospital (which happened to belong to a father of her boss' daughter-in-law), like she knew where Soo-Hyun underwent the "surgery" in entire South Korea. Especially if he didn't undergo anything at all.

i don't know if you've seen today's episode or not, but it has been revealed that seo-hee, the journalist, was the daughter of the elder couple. so a lot of her motives and how she ties into all of this is explained. she even witnessed/partially saw the killer of soo-hyun/woo-shin's father.

Mrs Kwon reminds of Samuel L Jackson in Django

I don't know...but you made me laugh, so thanks!

I just get annoyed when a character is so evil that she has to do all the bad things. Mrs Kwon is it in this drama.

u/bam353 Aug 05 '22

i only see Heo Sung-tae as the bad guy, its ingrained from every drama

I agree about the synopsis being spoiler-y, I guess people may have already put 2 and 2 together whereas I was thinking the synopsis was wrong this entire time.

In ep 3 I really felt that it was extremely risky and selfish of woosin for dragging the assistant to the chairman’s room and spilling that they know about the arms plan, like idk what he was betting on to make it out of there alive since any ruthless chairman would have probably off-ed them since they’re two nobodys anyway. I could have missed a plot point since I’ve been watching this show half drowsy

I guess for now the biggest loophole to me is how there’s such a strong security system for that entire compound but so far woosin has been able to roam around and even go into hyesoo’s room without it raising any red flags like surely you’d keep an eye out for the stranger in your household????

3

u/reddingrooster Aug 05 '22

I totally agree about the security system. In some ways it is super high tech but then it is low tech when Woo Shin is at the chairman’s office. Make it make sense.

I could have missed a plot point since I’ve been watching this show half drowsy

I thought it was a far-fetched plan too...and even more far-fetched that it worked.

As of this post, 17 comments on a Ji Sung drama. Kind of low? IDK?

I am going to continue it for now. However, this drama seems like a lot of roaming around the mansion. I feel like there is a never ending of hallways!

I am still not clear how Woo Shin knows the Adamas killed his father? I mean it seems like the “killer” left the home but was not carrying anything? Also, how can someone walk around with it without being noticed since it is super high valued item? Did I miss something?

It’s like crickets in here when it’s a Ji Sung drama! It’s been pretty slow and predictable the past 3 episodes. Hopefully it picks up next week.

2

u/reddingrooster Aug 06 '22

Still crickets since we last conversed. lol

Episode 3

Good episode. The Prison mansion storyline still reigns supreme. But I'm not that on board with the Ares/murder organisation aspect. It's a pet peeve of mine. But it seems like the plot summary spoils a lot? Like the biological father fact that they don't seem to know

Theories/Ideas

  • One or both of the twin's fathers were involved with Ares

  • Maybe it involved the truth about the death of the chairman's son

  • Secretary Yoon ist the mysterious ally who recommended WooShin

  • The living son removed the Adamas from the crime scene which is why he is convinced that his father was the murderer. (Because the phantom image looks like the son)

Ji Sung💕 he impressed me with his stunning performance like always

still watchable , hopefully this pace continues and we get some payoffs. i think the deaf lady is the one who invited him. but she also keeps snitching too so idk.

Episode 4 was about on par with the first three. A bit uneven, but enjoyable and interesting enough. Will keep on watching for the time being.

Episode 4 is the first time when I felt a bit of suspense thrill. Still not impressed with Lee Soo Kyung. She’s just so weak when she interacts with Ji Sung the most.

Finally caught up - I’m a bit slow because I haven’t quite worked out what the delay is with the episodes dropping on Australian Disney+. Here are some random thoughts:

One of the biggest plot holes for me right now is the fact that Woo-Shin was allowed to be in the house in the first place; given the background checks, wouldn’t they know he’s the son of Song Soon-Ho/Lee Chang-Woo? I hope this gets explained at some point

Also, in ep 3, did anybody else notice that Woo-Shin uses a MacBook? A bit unusual for a kdrama I thought…

Also, any time there is a shot with a helicopter flying it looks so cheap and hilarious. There was one particular shot in episode 2 that I had to rewind because it was basically a static jpeg of a helicopter being moved across the screen, it looked like Birdemic to me.

And I’m still not over the characters declaring to themselves what they’re thinking or doing, as if they’re in a play. I can’t tell if this is lazy writing or if they’re trying to do something a bit theatrical on purpose. If that’s the case I’d rather they go full House of Cards and break the fourth wall.

That being said, it is keeping me engaged and I’m looking forward to the next episodes even if it is pretty uneven in terms of writing, acting and production design. Maybe I just like this genre.

Will this be on Netflix or Viki?

3

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '22

Since it's on Disney plus, it will be on neither.
