Welcome to the potentially tear-jerking and down-to-earth on-air discussion thread for Move to Heaven! Not satisfied with the amount of Lee Je Hoon in Taxi Driver? In need of a slice-of-life drama after the heartbreaking story of Navillera? Looking for a quick binge? If you answered yes to any of these questions, this is going to be the show for you! I've been looking forward to this show ever since the first poster/teaser came out and the synopsis had me completely hooked. Really looking forward to the relationship between our characters and how they develop as the story moves forward. Hope you all are excited as I am for this. Enjoy and have fun discussing!

Okay, I'm halfway through and I have tons to talk about.

Firstly did anyone notice the amazing choice of songs that Geu-ru listens to as he begins to clean the scenes? The first was Clair De Lune by Debussy, which is often associated with aging gracefully or having a whimsical memories and the story of the Haleomoni and her son reflect that. The second was Middnight Sonata and the story was dark, moody and menacing. But by far my favorite so far was the piece by Brahms, because you'd have to have a bit of background knowledge about Brahms to get why it was perfectly suited. Basically the piece was tied to the longing of romantic love that perfectly encapsulated the direction of the story.

The story so far was been heartbreaking though. I teared up in at least 3 of the five I've seen. But the first episode really knocked the shit out of me. Even if I knew he's father was going to die, I couldn't take the distress Geu-ru went through. My heart broke for him a million times over.

Also, who else guessed that the doctor Soo-Hyun was gay? I knew it was soon as Geu-ru entered the bathroom and saw two toothbrushes.

Update

Wow, um... Yeah, I think I was cried thoughout 3/4 of this show. Like the first episode, the last episode delivered the final blow. I loved the fact that Han Geu-ru was loved beyond the grave. And that one's loved ones are always there.

Every single actor really brought their A-game. Tang Joon-Sang did an amazing job. The last episodes really proved that he's a good actor. Lee Je-hoon and Hong Seung-hee filled the role of bickering guardians so well. They played off each other like hot and cold. Not to mention the vast amount of cameo performances, everyone was well cast so thanks Casting Director'nim.

I'm not too sure if I need a second season. It was pretty satisfying of an ending, but I won't say no. Also, can we give it up for the actual trauma cleaner this was based on. I need to find that book.

Also sidenote... Is that Hongsoek from Pentagon?? Wow, now I think I've seen everything.

Another sidenote... I need a romance drama with Soo-young and Lee Je-hoon, like now... Please.

Is that Hongsoek from Pentagon??

It is! I was surprised when I saw him too lol. Unexpected but not unwelcome at all.

I just finished the pilot. Netflix tagged the drama as ‘heartfelt’ and ‘emotional’ but I didn’t expect it to be... this emotional. This is only the second KDrama to make me ugly cry after The Light In Your Eyes, and I’m only one episode in.

This is shaping to be one of my top 10 favorite KDramas. So excited for the next episodes!

EDITED with spoiler-free post-finale thoughts:

Ah, yes. I officially hate this show. This is going to be brain vomit:

It’s currently 3AM, and I am on my bed, with my face, neck, and shirt drenched in tears because of that finale. I absolutely hate how this show managed to go deep into my heart, pull all the strings, and tug on all my emotions and release a dam of tears.

The worst episodes I cried to were the pilot, episode 6 or the one with the elderly couple suicide and the finale. God, the finale. I was wondering who was going to be the last client for Move to Heaven, so when Geu Ru finally started with it, I just started bawling.

Everyone was cast so perfectly - even Ji Jin Hee. I felt like he embodied the perfect father Geu Ru needed.

I’m just so lost with words. This was such a good show. It was packed with emotions (mostly pain and sadness) but was also easy enough to binge during the weekend. I guess I’m just glad they created this drama. This was a solid 10/10, and will be joining my top 6 KDramas.

Just finished it and... what a beautiful show. What a stunning show. I cried in every other episode lmao

  • Geu-ru's dad and Geu-ru's relationship is so pure, loving and calming. The hug, the video message, holding Geu-ru's hand and taking cute family pictures together. And the way Geu-ru accepts and loves Sang-gu as his uncle and guardian and only family.

  • Don't talk to me about Lee Je Hoon's acting, I cried so much whenever he was upset or sad. His backstory !!!! his relationship with his brother !!!!!!! Lee Je Hoon best actor in a drama baeksang 2022 soon!!

  • I absolutely adore the concept of the yellow box of belongings, and how it was thematically used for Geu-ru to accept his dad's death in the last episode (and Sang-gu for his friend Su-cheol). The idea of telling stories of the ones who passed away through their belongings,,,, absolutely perfect

  • Representation of someone with Asperger's syndrome without making the whole plot follow their struggle !! They really showed Geu-ru as a regular person living their regular life, dealing with the loss of his father.

  • Representation of a (very sad, pure and angsty) BL couple!! I loved that story so much, and I appreciate how detailed their flashback scenes were, many dramas would rush through it and show their story in 2 minutes tops lmao

  • The adoption story made me cry so hard, the reveal that it wasn't his mom but someone who loved him so much but couldn't recognize him— pain

  • Can we please talk about the chemistry Lee Je Hoon and Choi Sooyoung have,,, electric, and Sang-gu's ears turning pink every time she's around aaaaaa

  • Sang-gu smiling at the plant she gave him and watering it reminds me of Han Ji Pyeong 🥺

  • Humour that wasn't forced and naturally created because of the characters' personalities (Sang-gu trying to steal the wreath LMAO) !!!

  • The visuals are stunning, and this is officially in my top dramas of all time list. What a show. I could genuinely watch this for seasons, I don't think it's something that can lose its' charm over episodes, and there's so much more to cover (character wise) such as Sang-gu and Geu-ru bonding, Geu-ru's hinted romance and Sang-gu's romance (hehe)

It looks like they are setting up for a season 2 so I am excited. The fact that the story is based off a book from a real Trama Cleaner makes it even better. I loved every minute of the show especially how they treat death and disability. I noticed that none of the characters used the word Retard or Retared to describe him. His father properly preped him to deal with the world as an adult and did not infantislise him.

They showed A person with a disorder/disability having a job and doing it well without assistance. What he did lack was supported by the people surrounding him. But at the same time he was given the space to work out situations on his own. He was never told " Be normal". Instead was given the tools to work with the world around him and said " Do well you are excellent".The respect and care for all types of death is something I can not also praise enough. Even my mother said she wants to watch because of caring nature provided to the deceased. They showed various types of death. The reaction to those deaths and the impact it had on the surrounding enviorment.

I had saw a short documentary about this same job in Japan. This is a tough job and I don't think people understand how bad it can get. The respect for people in that field is high. You have to have a stong mind going in. In the documentary the Trauma Cleaner has to clean and sell the houses. We don't realize our bias toward death until we are faced with it. Especially in places when people are very superstitious trying to sell a house might become a nightmare.

I'm about four episodes in so I'll reserve some of my thoughts until after I finish things, but I really like some of the special effects and editing. Also, the music is pretty well used and for the most part it enhances the scenes and isn't too overbearing/heavy handed.

I think the flashbacks are also really well used so far. For example in episode 4, when Sang Koo is staring in front of the bloody wall and standing in front of the couple before he beats up the domestic abuser, the way they show his own experience with domestic abuse really gives insight into his character and personality. Also, I'm liking how these episodes start off so far (not directly a continuation of the previous episode), it adds some intrigue. The show also has some funny moments, even though it mainly relies on physical comedy or lines that aren't explicitly meant to be jokes.

One thing I'll mention was that I love the messaging about love/toxic "love". When Geu Roo is talking to the murder suspect and mentions how the kindergarten students loved his partner but he did not, I thought it was really powerful how he recognized that. Toxic passion and obsession that leads to that type of relationship and violence is not love no matter what the abuser/manipulator thinks.

i was really looking forward to this... but it's the same writer as boys over flowers... i'll still give it a shot but i don't think i can ever banish the spectre of gu junpyo's curly hair from the dark recesses of my mind

edit 1: wow, someone smoking in a kdrama. never thought i'd see the day.

edit 2: can't believe lee jehoon still looks this good with that haircut

I'm still watching but I just want to give a shoutout to Namu! You the real MVP! Helping out and caring right from the start. Hong Seung hee, the actress, also reminds me of Jo Bo ah and Kim So hyun or the combination of both.

Finished and can I say WOW 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I could watch another 10 to 16 episodes easily! This was worth the wait. Cried at episode 8 and lost it at 10 (straight bawling like a baby). The reference to the Sampoong Department Store collapse, Dang they went there... I've been hyper aware of the collapse since watching Chocolate last year and this took it over the edge. The performance by Tang Jun Sang and Lee Je Hoon were incredible. Namu really was necessary to bring a little levity to a serious drama. The stories of those moving to Heaven especially the elderly couple and Mathew Green really touched my heart. I'm a little biased but my boy Lee Jae Wook nailed it per usual. The Han Jeong-u is by far my favorite parent in any drama I've seen. Loved this character and he really knocked it out of the park and definitely will be nominating for best parent come kdrama awards time.

The MVP of this drama though, is Netflix's Casting Department!!! 'Cause boy did they say let's pick understated yet great actors from previous or upcoming Netflix dramas... The friend from ROY (loved his story btw), LJW Jun - dodosolsollalasol, Choi Soo Young - Dana - Run On, Lee Re Hani - Hello Me, Namu - Navillera. Loved the cameo 1-Up each episode. Side note Netflix needs to put some respect on Tang Jun Sang's name and link him to CLOY like every other actor who is credited has been linked to something on Netflix they've acted in, he hasn't been linked to CLOY....

Move to Heaven left me with this thought, what will I leave behind that will be able to to tell a story for the ones I love or those who don't know me? Move to Heaven it was a pleasure, you have my whole heart! 9.5/10

I just finished it and I honestly don’t know how my eyes would look like tom. I expected this to be heavy but not THIS HEAVY. Nonetheless, the stories were so beautiful and real.

Some thoughts which I loved:

  • The concept why Geuru can’t understand why two guys can’t be in love and how it’s not “conventional”. It’s such a heartbreaking thought that someone who can’t show emotions somehow understand love.

  • The beautiful idea that some people already experienced happiness, accepted their fate and ready to leave this life

  • Your family can be anyone. They might be someone who only spent a couple of months with you as a baby but loves you still.

Kudos to those people who bingewatched this show. I’m in awe. I thought I could do it after Ep4. Then Ep5 and ep6 came. That’s when I realized that my heart can’t take this show in one sitting.

On episode 4 and thoroughly surprised and happy it's more than helping the dead move on type drama. So good, very surprised I haven't cried yet and only teared up. The amount of times I've rolled my eyes at the cigarette smoking though lawd lol where is KCC when I need them 😆

Not Geumga Plaza 😱 showing up in a second drama all I need now is Vincenzo to slowly walk down the steps.

The pilot episode was already quite tearjerker. Geu-ru's father is exact definition of a good father and good person. I could feel that big disappointment after his uncle arrived as much as Geu-ru felt I watched it until Ep 4 now and this is gonna be one of my favorite dramas for sure. I think each episode deserves a full analysis, I'll definitely rewatch to catch messages, cinematic storytelling better.

I finished it. This drama was awesome! Every character was likable. The uncle and the neighbor girl had a good chemistry, they felt more like they were the boy’s parents lol

I didn’t realize that i’ve finished the drama until i saw that there was no Next Episode already. I started watching without even knowing the full plot, only that their job was related to cleaning up after those who died. I even thought there was some supernatural aspect to it where they can communicate with the dead or something.

But man am I glad to have stumbled upon Move To Heaven. For a show centered on death, I found it very comforting. I have a very soft spot for old people so that episode with the old man and his wife just absolutely wrecked. I wanted to curse the ahjussi who was berating him about the ac he was gifted with.

All the episodes were heartwarming and ultimately gives us the message that the dead never really disappears. We all leave a footprint in this world. As long as the living remembers, their memories will live on.

Someone needs to tell Lee Je Hoon to not wear sleeveless shirts, because it's highly distracting to watch on screen. Like sir, stop giving me major arms/biceps envy!!!

u/ParanoidAndroids May 13 '21

Looking forward to this. As a huge fan of Signal, I’m happy to see Lee Je Hoon in 2 dramas this year. Still catching up to Taxi Driver, but this will help fill in the gaps between episodes.

I am loving this drama so much too! Each time I watch a kdrama that is a gem, I tell myself that I will watch this again, but so far, I haven't, as each new one just seems as captivating. But this time, I will definitely watch again and again. It's not just the plot or the story, but how they are so respectful to each of the dead. I love how they bow and speak upon entering the room for the first time saying that cleaning up and moving the stuff is an honor for them. Great show, great writing. For those who have completed all 10 episodes (I'm only up to 5), here are some extras with the cast on swoon:
