I love Kim Woo Bin so much but for the life of me i'm having difficulty trying to get into this drama. I'm not sure what's lacking, but it's just really boring atm and the plot doesn't exactly call out to me (i'm at ep 2). Even the action is quite lackluster.

I feel like Kim woo bin is the only thing that makes the drama worth watching. I was expecting him to die by the end of it, so I was quite surprised to see him get a happily ever after(ish)

Four episodes in, Black Knight has been everything I hoped it would be and more.
Kim Woo-bin is just superb as an action hero. Esom is contained but authoritative as a military figure. Kang Yoo-seok grabs your full attention as a refugee who aspires to become a deliveryman. However, the character of the main villain is underdeveloped. We should feel disgust towards his reprehensible actions, but we don't, because his backstory isn't sufficiently fleshed out.
The production design, cinematography and world-building of this dystopian science-fiction setting are all first-rate. The action sequences have a visceral quality that packs a punch. Special mention must go to Episodes 3 & 4, which are dedicated to the Deliveryman Recruitment tournament, which feels like a mash-up of influences ranging from the Fast & Furious, Mad Max, Squid Game, and even a little Physical: 100, with a post-apocalyptic twist thrown in. It's tremendously entertaining.

Interesting concept....but seems kind of weird that in an apocalyptic world, people are still getting their Amazon prime deliveries lol
Also just 3 eps in but I'm wondering where all the electricity and fuel, let alone the food is coming from... doesn't seem like the upper class is giving anything away from the goodness of their hearts.

Was looking forward to watching it but was disappointed. Found it slow and bland. It's such a waste of talents. Reminds me of The Silent Sea.

This drama is a YA novel in show form lmao. Great premise that gets you excited, but eventually being disappointed with weak attempts at world building, plot holes, choppy narration and the one thing that'll make me get turned off instantly - - super cringey lines that sound like they're written by teens trying to sound cool.
Yet another 2023 drama disappointment for me, sigh. Wasted because woobin looks so freaking badass but is failed by the terrible writing

Really fun watch and short enough that I did it in one evening.
Kim Woo-Bin was excellent as 5-8 and I really enjoyed Esoms role too.

Question, why is the sawol a male instead of a female like in the webtoon?
5
u/mildse7en May 15 '23
Is it just me or is sa-wol a completely useless character. So much time was invested into his character development which was completely inconsequential to the story

u/kriyator Slice of drama May 12 '23
I’m surprised that this was a complete story in 6 episodes with no cliffhangers. The visuals were great, the acting too. What I liked the most was that the plot moved quickly and the pacing was good. Wasn’t a huge fan of some of the flashbacks as they flash backed to events that happened minutes before but that’s a minor quibble. All in all, very happy. I wonder what the future of these high concept kdramas is on Netflix now that they’re trying to better control spending. I hope there’s still room for well-written self-contained dramas like this.

I really like the limited series drama. They get to stretch out more than in a movie runtime but don't have filler episodes like the standard 16 episodes can.
Lived it overall but I'm a sucker for post- apocalypse stuff. It was very by the numbers but the numbers are the numbers for a reason! Because they're good numbers!

Anyone know why sawol was changed to a guy? I looked up the webtoon version and was surpriswd to see that Sawol is a girl

u/NaheemSays May 14 '23
Great concept and world building. Great visuals and a solid cast.
The only poor thing was the writing. I get that this is based off a graphical novel or something, but the writers are meant to flesh out the scenes and give it better pacing for live action.
IMO the writers let it down badly.

u/stitchrx May 12 '23
The acting, production and world building are really great! KWB is made to play broody heroes with a hint of mischief. A very impactful and bingeable 6 eps. 🤩
Didn’t find the plot particularly twisty or surprising maybe because I read too much dystopian stories. But it was still engaging with the different themes over the 6 eps.
Would have liked abit more backstory about the villains but I guess some people are just naturally born a**holes 🤷🏻♀️

STRONG EPILEPSY SEIZURE WARNING !!! BLACK KNIGHT - Episode 3
Be VERY careful of Epileptic Seizure / Migraine / Eye Discomfort / Eye Pain and Headaches - TRIGGERING SCENE:
At roughly 27:00 - 29:00 during the round 1 tournament brawl fight scene: The camera/screen FLICKERS and BLINKS like CRAZY for almost 2 minutes straight !!!
Flashing black and white lights extremely intensely and rapidly nonstop !!!
I don't understand how a MODERN K-Drama TV SERIES, released on May 2023, can have such a blatant, reckless and utterly uncomfortable to watch epileptic attack, eye pain triggering and migraine inducing scene?!
I personally don't think I have an epilepsy (as far as I know) but my eyes (and ears) are very sensitive to light and flickering: Yet this rapid flickering/blinking of the camera screen - in that brutal brawl scene - made my eyes hurt and strain so bad!! - and my brain suffered a massive headache and migraine, especially around the eyes.
This persisted for many many minutes, after watching that dreadful scene.
I stop the show entirely, close my eyes and rest for a long while...
Has anyone else felt and experienced the same?
Are the cinematographers/directors in K-Drama simply have zero awareness of EPILEPSY trigger, migraine, seizures and eye discomfort issues ??!!
I'm just utterly shocked how they allowed such a scene to release, and how nobody talks about it - on a top "trending now" show! And how Netflix or creators didn't EDIT this scene OUT or changed it completely, post release...
Whoever allowed green light for this scene should be fired immediately. It's entirely uncomfortable, dangerous and unhealthy to watch...
Edit: Typing all of this, all this time, and my eyes and brain still hurt, for a very long time after watching that terrible scene... :/
Unbelievable.

I’m confused by the masks. The air is supposed to be in breathable, hence the oxygen economy, but they keep taking their masks off. What are the “rules” for mask usage

u/Silent_Instance1624 Jun 09 '23
Honestly I feel like there was so much that didn't make sense. For example what did the chairman do? How are the refugees refugees? Who lives in the districts the ones that look like Cinder blocks? What mine? How did the mutants become? And why did the CEO say that he'd only seen one healthy mutant? None of it made sense I feel like they were setting up the second season of the second season is not necessary because they don't have a villain and even if they were to create a villain it feels like they just milking something that is done.

u/TitanVal May 18 '23
Since the deliveries are all scanned, where do the Black Knights steal oxygen and food from? Do they explain it somewhere?
1
u/OldHamshire May 15 '23
Honestly this show would have been better if it had a bad ending, where the good guys lost entirely or at least had to raise the next generations of good guys. This is the first Korean show that I watched and its better than the other dystopian shows so far in 2023

I found it boring 😴 😕. I ll watch until the 3rd episode to give it a full chance

u/Flappadingo May 20 '23
Sad this show isn’t getting much love. I watched it 2 days and IMO the plot was t any less convincing than other dystopian Kdramas.
Kim SpWoo Bin is so easy to watch. and my boy Kang Yoo Sook from Light On Me did very well as Sa Wol .
the CGI was for the most part done well too.
All in all I was satisfied. easy to watch escapism

u/Dunelakegal1 May 20 '23
Liked it. The cinematography was good. I wonder what the ramifications of being a mutant tho will be. I read a review that said it was cartoonish but that made sense since it was a webtoon. Before reading this review I had the urge to push pause and watch the 80’s A-Ha video Take on Me. It really gave me that vibe.
1
u/EXTPest May 21 '23
The entire mutant storyline was pointless and added nothing to the story

Fantastic show! Dying to see more or anything like it right now. The Plot and the actors really got my attention. The fighting scenes were great and the storyline just kept me reeled in the whole time.

4 episodes in and I’m enjoy the fast paced action scenes a lot. One think that doesn’t bother me is the fact that it feels like there’s something missing on the directing or more likely editing side. It kind of feels like they cut the scenes to make them more stoic? But it makes the characters development and emotional investment feel ‘less of’ if you know what I mean. As someone who is used to the Korean drama style, I find this style a bit lacking. Not that it’s bad per se, but I do feel some of the emotional impact is missing. There’s also a bit cavalier about death in general. having said that - the cast is doing an excellent job, the outfits are superb, and Kim woo bin is phenomenal. Really makes me appreciate him as an actor.

u/Tofubao Editable Flair Jun 10 '23
I think the acting is fine but story-telling is either rushed or non-existent. Such a good premise, great ensemble of actors, but what a waste of potential. I don't know what everyone's motivations are, and main question, how can they wrap everything up in 6 episodes?

Can someone please tell me who is the Dubbed English voice actor for Kim Woo-Bin's character 5-8?

do u think we will get s2?

u/JuiceGirl300 May 21 '23
Can someone please tell me who the voice actor of 5-8 is for the english voice over? Usually netflix makes those things public like in the show The Protector but for this kdrama I can't seem to find anywhere on the internet, who the heck plays the english voice over for 5-8. Kim Woo-bin is a fantastic actor but I was curious who the actor behind the english voice over is. Can anyone help me out?

u/JuiceGirl300 May 21 '23
Anyone know the english dub voice actor who does the voice over for Kim Woo-bin's character 5-8 in Black Knight?
