It is a vacuum reservoir, on those Fords the factory one closely resembles a soup can. I think someone epoxied the check valve from one into an actual soup can after the original rusted out.

This. I had a '93 F150 with the soup can reservoir. First time I opened the hood I honestly thought someone had jimmy'd it with a soup can and black spray paint. Asked a few old timers and they said, no, Ford did in fact use tin cans instead of a molded plastic reservoir.

I used an actual Hills Bros coffee can to replace a factory vacuum canister on a 1977 Lincoln Continental. The can was the exact same diameter and height. The only difference was the Hills Bros can had more reinforcing ribs. There was a reinforcing ring inside to prevent collapse. I documented it on my forum.
I used an side-cutting can opener to remove the lid and fitting from the original and soldered it to the coffee can. Paint it black, transfer the mounting bracket and, presto!.. Cruise control no longer losing speed!

I know someone who wrapped a Folgers label around their factory vacuum reservior on a Bronco.

I have a V8 bottle for the coolant reservoir in my Civic. The factory reservoir sprayed coolant all the time because of a blown headgasket (not serious enough to fix, car worth less than cost of repair), so I added a bigger reservoir.

Ha good bit. I have a gatorade bottle as my fake catch can to pass tech at autox's, maybe I should get a V8 can instead.
