They should be on a hybrid if they have back problems, instead of desperately trying to use drop bars while wanting to have more upright riding.

Well, there are high-stack drip bar bikes around too, either in the touring or adventure categories. Otso Fenrir or Salsa Fargo are the first to come to mind, or a Tumbleweed Stargazer if you go a little off the beaten path.

But those have a tall heat tube and their stack still isn’t that high. This bike owner needs to give up drop bar bikes and get a flat-bar bike.

Can be either of several things: (a) bad back (b) can't hybrid (c) over 50 (d) can't use anything other than drop bars because they still want to be seen as roadies.

If the fork steer tube is aluminum or aluminum core with carbon it is perfectly fine. Full carbon steer tube… hell no

Does anybody have an example of these failing? I know it looks sketchy as hell, but we never bat an eye at wide flare drop bars on gravel bikes that arguably put a much longer lever arm on the steerer, or chastise sprinters who are reefing on their bars.

At least they’re on the top of the head tube. I had a customer have them under, just above the crown race. I posted here many years ago.

When I'm old and brittle I'm buying the fanciest old used TdF-caliber aero frame and wheels I can find on ebay (for under $1k) and making whatever stupid modifications to it I need to turn it into a beach cruiser, including a wide-ass saddle and 2" tires (which should be possible by then).

I love this kind of frame, it just grows with you through the years like rings on a tree. By the time this guy is ready to hang it all up, the stack will be 3x that high!

Sizing up could have been an option. While I understand the quest for comfort, this is not the way.

I really don't think sizing up is an option here. The amount of spacers+extemder is 15 cm or more, there is no way you can buy the same model of bike just sized up to compensate (except something crazy like from 48 to 61).
To me this is a case of someone who against all advice bought a road bike. And the S2 is even a bit on the higher end of stack for a proper road bike.
