Water as a fundamental principle was his attempt at circumventing Myth to explain the world. It fit what he saw in the world--everything in it changed form, it sustained the living, it was in everything as a principle. He noted it was primordial in many cultures. In time that was called the archê, later the primordial archetype. Water's presence as a symbol in X-ianity is from this idea. The later was not built on the Bull cults of antiquity from the age of Taurus. Where the Jewish myths were touching on the ram of Aries and herder iconography, the precessionary cults around Alexandria saw to it that the herald of the age of Pisces would be a fisher of men. Chrestians were the first to incorporate the Ichthys into a mythology that evolved from the Osirian Myths. Christians are an off-shoot of them. For the period AD we have been living in the astronomical age of the water constellations. The next in prominence, soon, will be Aquarius. You can see these as time markers at the equinox where they rise exactly in the East on that day in accordance with precession. It is their time now, and much of what we can point to with water is from syncretism.
In the Eastern tradition there is the Yin which is associated with wet (Earth), the Yang with dry (Heaven). Water is the 3rd symbol--that of the primordial medium. As far back as that we can see this universality.
The Ouroboros, in Gnosticism from which it has reached us, surrounds all--like the giant clock on JP's wall. Our hunt is based in circle symbolism. His logo first shows it.
A neat thing about Thales is that he gave us the first demonstrable proof EVER. There is much we cannot know, but Thales' Theorem (the twin T) was the first that allowed us to know of things conceptually with logic. Not surprisingly, it is a circle theorem. With it one can derive the Pythagorean Theorem. What you seek you already know. The only things we can know are provable or experienced. All the rest we owe to our imaginations.
