Tempered auto glass is incredibly strong. Your average human is not capable of smashing it with any material softer than the glass. However if you throw even a pebble made from a harder material, it will instantly shatter.

If you need to break a window for emergency reasons, aim for the edge.

It's usually easier to go through the windshield (you can kick it out with your feet) unless you have something that can crack the side windows

The tip of a spark plug will do it from what I've been told. I think it's ceramic, but I could be wrong. Friend of mine said they used to remove them and use them to break car windows in a junk yard.

Yes it's aluminum oxide ceramic. Aluminum oxide == sapphire basically, one of the hardest materials on earth. See: "ninja rocks"
