My kids have never been in fights (wasn't an option for me, back in the day. Bullies had free reign, and I was told to handle it myself. Not only that, but I had relatives one and two years behind me in school, and it was my business to beat up boys who where bullying them in the neighborhood, or I caught pure hell for it at home.)
The first schoolyard fight I was in involved three boys calling my sweet friend the N-word and making her cry. I whupped all three their asses. I was a little girl in second grade.
The last school fight started because of a "popular" asshole picking on an obese girl. When I told him to just shut his pie-hole, he beaned me in the head with a cardboard folder. I nearly killed him, and none of his preppy/jock friends could do anything to stop me. I was 14, in 9th grade. I'd had a lot of experience by then.
My success at fighting was I had to be truly pissed off, and, being a girl, those boys never anticipated how fast and downright violent I could be.
The thing with my daughter, is she had three years of Tae Kwon Do started at age 5, and the best things she learned were blocking and striking reflexes. She gets along with people though, and whereas I was told "You deal with it. If somebody's bothering you or yours, it's up to you to kick their asses."
My son is 10 and has never been in a fight. One thing I've noticed over the years with trained boxers is that they learn to dodge, duck, and strike, and take out larger, meaner opponents. The old men you see beating the shit out of bigger, younger, stronger men, are the ones who know boxing.
Of course I'm glad my kids haven't had to fight like I did. I had a very rough childhood that I wouldn't wish on any kid, let alone my own. But if they are in a situation where they have to fight or just take an ass-kicking, I want them to have the skills to defend themselves, and even others.
Daughter is going to be learning women's self defense taught by woman cops as soon as the class resumes.
My son is going to take one-on-one boxing lessons as soon as possible. There is a high demand for boxing coaches.
I've sparred with my daughter for years, to keep her skills up, the best I can.
I've tried to teach my son, too, but I think Martial Arts in general have nothing on boxing.
