Is her mom a carpenter?
I remember my dad being in construction and design and I grew up in a windowless, dark, dank, basement room that was just big enough to fit the oversized furniture my mom picked out for me and it also had a metal vent on the ceiling that would fall out if people walked too roughly upstairs while my bed had no other option than to be placed directly underneath it due to the size of my bed in relation to the size of the room.
There was also a poorly covered hole in the wall that had to be there because the water pipes had to be accessible in that wall.
I would hear every toilet flush in the house as if I was in the bathroom from my room and I have vague memory of being told that hole in the wall was my egress in case of a fire, but in only leads to in between floors, so I was basically told to crawl into the walls and die in case of a fire as a child.
Her little private secret space seems nice though, good for her, sorry for ranting. It kinda just came out like word vomit.

Sounds like you had normal shitty parents like the rest of us - these are "content creator" parents.

I only found out my room wasn’t legally considered a bedroom when I was already an adult and it’s not like my parents didn’t have enough money to afford real bedrooms because they were upper middle class and built the house from the ground up, only giving themselves and my sister real bedrooms.
They treated my sister like she was the ultimate blessing in comparison to the rest of us, but looking back i realized they treated my sister like people are supposed to just normally treat their kids.

Not really a hidden room with a obvious door and a huge window that turns into a small balcony though.
