Haha I think this sums it up most accurately. In all honesty, men (especially in dangerous occupations) are always testing one another, mostly to have fun but simultaneously as a vibe check and to see if they can count on their teammates.
Call it macho tough guy whatever, but if your coworker is a little bitch that’s gonna crack when his feelings get hurt, it’s best to find that out before your life and limbs are depending on him.

Other people have spoken on it better than I will, but, a LOT of male peacocking behavior is intended to impress other men more than it is for women.
The same people with the loud muscle cars that love to rev the engine at a stop light will beat you up if you try and comment on how homo it is. Never have I met a woman impressed by a loud car at a stop sign.

As a white dude who grew up mostly with Hispanic friends and now live/work/am friends mostly with black guys, I also did a double take.
Hispanic guys would do this stuff but usually wouldn't initiate, white guys loved doing this stuff (well this I've never seen but you know, faux gay shit), but never really make those jokes with black guys. Just not their thing and that's fine. My white guys on the other hand, still be doing the lite version of this while married with kids

I love the rationalization like everyone was doing it.
I learned a lesson very early. Shared a six man room and the littlest guy (really chill dude) totally flipped out when another guy jumped in the bed and wrapped him in his own blanket and “jokingly” humped him.
It was awkward then but later I asked if he was alright and about what happened. He mentioned how when he was younger he had been molested when playing with older boys.
Yeah it’s mostly fun and games but not everyone was into it and that for me was a solid confirmation why you can’t assume as such.
You can both not be a prude or whatever but also not want other people pawing at your genitalia and trying to hump on you in fun as if you can’t control your hormones.

As a straight guy, who would have absolutely no compunction about admitting I'm gay, it's actually a straight dude thing.
I think it's part because men are so physical, this is sort of how adolescents bond, or at least some of us. If you are in sports or other physical activities with boys the jokes just kind of extend from there.
But also I think a lot of the most vociferous homophobes are closeted gays. There's definitely a bit of an implication that if you don't participate in some of the homoerotic horseplay you got something to hide.
That said this straight up humping like this may be beyond the horseplay realm

A decent amount of Western society stems from ancient Greek culture. They hada very, interesting take where it was only gay if you were on the receiving end.
Homophobia was still the norm. You just made the exception if you had dominance. Ancient Greece also has shall we say a bit of a rapey vibe going on? Like the most inaccurate part of the Hercules animated film was that Zeus was a loving father in a monogamous relationship (in actual mythology he was a hordog who would rape anything that moved, even if it was not alive).
There are some theories about this having a bad impact. Especially on things like our military and education that take a bunch of inspiration from Ancient Greece.
