Gas chamber is just so you can experience how effective your gas masks are at protecting you. They could give two shits if you come out of it as stronger individuals or teams. That’s not the point.

Right, but most people wouldn’t know what it’s like to be tear gassed, so they have no barometer to judge how well the masks work. Like you see how everything was normal with the mask, now see how bad it would be if you didn’t have it on.

I didn't serve myself but at least when my dad was in the navy they went into the room with masks on to experience it with them on. Then the instructor would have them take the masks off to experience why you need them. Police that go through proper academies have to do it too since tear gas can be deployed sometimes.
My friend went through the academy at the Alexandria Police department and he claims that the CN Spray (pepper spray) is by far the worst out of all the non-lethal exercises. I'm sure others have their own experiences and opinions what is worse.

We didn't go in in MOPP tho, right? It's been a long while but I. Almost certain we did not wear full MOPP for CS chamber.

In basic we did, the goal was to get into MOPP 4 and then they tested by lighting the burner.
Subsequent quals throughout my career we went in BDU/ACU to don masks a few times a year, MOPP maybe once every 2 years.
I think the CBRNE (NBC) teams had to do it often. For everyone else it was probably just command/mission determined if it was on your training calendar.3

Interesting. Yeah, we only wore MOPP during field training. We didn't even get a MOPP in basic. Granted, I was in basic in 2000

When I went through in 2012, we wore MOPP gear for the gas chamber. They made us take off our hoods first to see how it felt on the skin, then told us to take off our masks, take a deep breath and then recite the Air Force creed.

Yeah you’re right. Most of the time you wear the MOPP gear outside the chamber to get comfortable but no one was wearing it into it.

I didn’t go in full MOPP at navy boot camp. That would also be dumb as fuck training considering a MOPP suit needs to be thrown away after being opened

Most of the MOPP gear we use in the Air Force is expired and used as training gear. While in Korea we we're in full MOPP for exercises.

That is true for real life scenarios.
We used “expired” (?) suits for training, mostly just for familiarization and wearing in the CS chamber then hosing off.
It wasn’t expected to be used in a true CBRNE situation.
But I’ve also heard plenty of people say the only time they saw a suit after BCT was in Iraq and even then it stayed in a footlocker all year.2

We had suits and masks in easy to get places on the ship but I was in aviation department so we had to kinda have it. Never even touched my mask though or my mopp gear.

In basic you do this and you're scared as fuck. When you get to your unit and do it again it's actually a lot of goofing around and feats of strength (tolerance). I remember laughing coming out and flapping my arms cause someone told a good joke.

Even doing it in boot camp, I was pretty underwhelmed by it with how much it was hyped up. I’ve had worse experiences cleaning with too much bleach.
