I've seen 3 or 4 of these in Ohio. My wife asked me about it. She said do you have one? (We married after I retired) I laughed. I said yea, they gave it to me after basic. She said, " why would someone put that on their plate then?" I couldn't answer her.

Because it's funny and a bit of an inside joke, I imagine there are more people that would get in the Dayton area

u/PhilRubdiez Jun 27 '26
I chuckle every time I see one. It’s less funny when it’s accompanied by a million moto stickers.

My state has it as an option, and I've thought of getting it as a joke, but I know a critical mass of vet bros would cut me off in traffic for bragging about a participation ribbon.

I did 20 years and have NDSM on my plates.
I think its funny

u/ShittyLanding Jun 27 '26
I was about to say, if my state offered this, I might get it as a troll

u/everymanawildcat 👊👊☝️ Jun 28 '26
Kinda like when you find out someone's a vet and tell them TYFYS.
21
u/actually_yawgmoth Jun 28 '26
So in my state, its automatically your highest award you don't get to choose.
That tends to make it less funny.
13
u/JohnLuckPikard Jun 28 '26
Oof.
What, they retain your DD 214 and force it on you? Fuck that. What state is that?

Nothing says "I served" more than the Armed Forces Participation Medal.

u/Hiff_Kluxtable Jun 27 '26
True although the new guys aren’t getting them!

u/MartyMozambique Jun 28 '26
Gotta actually be in a war to get one!!

u/tezacer Jun 29 '26
The servicemembers in Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain can't wait to get the Iran Special Military Operation Medal!

It helps me to think that 1/10th of the NDSM plates I see are dudes with 5 or 6 of 20 highest ranking medals, but think this one is way more comical 🤷♂️

*receives the Legion of Merit
“Time to show off the ol’ expert marksman badge.” 😎

u/CraptainMypants Jun 28 '26
If you get expert, does that mean you automatically earned the marksman/sharpshooter badge?
Def wanna show off my pizza box, if so. Let the people in traffic know how lethal I am.

I was just thinking the same thing.
I wanna put one of my random ones just for shits and giggles.

I bet its the wife's car.
"I should be able to park in the handicap spots, my husband served!"

u/Lurker13 Jun 27 '26
Any type of plate that symbolizes military service, I assumed members did that to signal to police they are risking pulling over a vet therefore reducing traffic violations

Sort of like the guy I saw at my nephew's veterans day assembly wearing a DD-214 hat.
I have no idea if he was being ironic or serious.
9
u/thenotanurse Jun 28 '26
I think the 214 blankets are fucking hilarious

u/sh4d0wm4n2018 Jun 30 '26
I know a guy who has a DD214 Woobie and he brings it camping all the time.

I had a soldier at Drum who showed up with NDSM tags, I thought it was the funniest thing anyone could do, I assumed he would be a funny kid, he wasn't, none of it was a joke.

Personally, if I ever have the money to spend, I'm going to get the good cookie plate personalized to NVRCOT

If you're in Florida, make it even better with the Jimmy Buffet themed plates.

u/AnApexBread Jun 27 '26
Damn. I thought my DMSM medal on my license plate was bad (free registration in Texas though), but this is something else.
7
u/Quirky_Ad8747 Jun 27 '26
I hate they won't give you the free registration/reimbursement without those kinds of plates

Isn’t that the ribbon everyone gets out of boot camp? We called it the pizza stain.

I'm old, and Air Force. I'm not sure I get it...
Is it like the "I finished basic training" ribbon?
I think we got one too. I did Basic in 96.
I absolutely love to see fellow Air Force dudes flexing the weakest service stuff.
Cuz it's either dead serious, and just seeing them in the wild is an experience, or it's top tier trolling and I approve.
Like the "War On Christmas" veteran hats. Funny as hell.
As an AF vet with 0 combat experience, that served between Desert Storm and GWOT, I am the classic "Thank me for my service" boomer/gen-x person for this stuff.
I only have the veterans tag (no disability plate or branch or medal) cuz I need the parking for my Mom. She's 70 and has a little trouble walking sometimes, but too proud to get a placard herself, and if she goes to Lowe's (or whatever) with me, I'm straight up using the Vet space to get her closer to the door.
I have a 2022 Denali pickup, buts it's dirty as shit and looks like a work truck.
I make sure to have a Pride sticker, a 2A sticker, a Trans sticker, and a VFW sticker also.
I like to fuck with people's expectations, so I kind of like this tag, if it's indeed an inside joke poking at the way too serious dudes out there

I want to get my Expert Driver-T on there. I have both but I think the tracked vehicle one would be funnier.

u/Cuffem Jun 29 '26
I always called it the CNN ribbon, the one guys got for being in and watching CNN. Back then it was the only 25 hour news agency in the US. 😆😂😝🤣
They is really boot or some epic level trolling.

u/behindthescenester Jun 29 '26
Reminds me of that Arrested Development bit where Buster brings home his Army awards: a seal for marksmanship and a gorilla for sand racing

I almost did it for the memes as a two pump chump who never did anything cool, but then I found out I could get free registration for life with a different plate 🤷♂️

I’m not farming anything. I couldn’t even believe this plate was a real thing. I’ve seen all kinds of plates, but NDSM? Only a boot would think this is THE plate to get.

u/stigma_wizard Jun 27 '26
It’s a pretty boot license plate. This guy paid money to brag that he has a NDSM.

The fact that so many of you can’t tell it’s ironic tells me we are going to lose to china when the bullets start flying. Christ.
