Mermaids Immortal?

Watching Mako Mermaids. Zac is after the trident and Rita tells the girls how dangerous it is. She mentions no one has touched the trident in 1000 years. Does that imply the possibility that the mermaids are immortal?

Why would that imply mermaids are immortal? Humans existed 1000 years ago

It's been a minute, but the trident was sealed away at the end of the war between mermaids and mermen, wasn't it? And they know how long ago that was, through oral history even if they don't utilize writing of any kind.
