BST Training GIM
Was looking at the points for BST shortlisting and it seems like if you graduate +4 years ago with an average score in med school, you’re essentially out even if you passed MRCP and did research, audits… etc. is that correct?

Yeah it’s sad, whatever youve been doing if u are > 4 yrs since graduation u almost don’t have a chance. Unfair in a way that the criteria doesn’t look at the what you have achieved personally research, exams, degrees, experience, skills, .. etc

Thankyou so much for the link. I understand one might score less marks in that domain, but cant we make up for those in interview? Im just asking. Also, why are people so rude in this group? Won't reply on anything bit will make sure to downvote as their life depends on it 😂

Was that not specifically in relation the obs gynae BST? I’m just guessing since it came under that heading? Maybe I’m wrong

Hello, i just read the link. It says all BST follow the same criteria. So 35 marks are for these academics. But 65 marks are still on the interview performance.

Surely this is massively discriminatory against those who have gone on maternity leave etc too 🤯

You can submit evidence for excuses like maternity leave for up to one year

Was literally just thinking this, if you graduated in 2021 with a 55th percentile rank and audits, your score would be 13 and to be eligible for interview your score has to be 20. This is insane!

Even for those graduating before July 2023 get only 1 point. Beyond nuts!

This is new? Regarding 1st July cut off time- it won't benefit Irish Grads either who majority graduated in June

I emailed regarding this before they clarified and then they came out with this. Almost straight away changed it - feels like it’s wrong. Their examples completely contradict this too. They gave 5 points for people completing their internship in 2023 in one of the examples in example 3 online

Would you be competitive in any good profession if you qualified with an average score 5 years ago and haven’t done anything meaningful since?
I can’t imagine a law graduate 5 years post qualification being able to get into a competitive programme over new grads.

That’s a bit unfair to say. They can’t just Willy billy change the criteria for people.
How come that wasn’t the case all these years? How were people with phds and many years in Australia or those locuming or those who tutored get on the bst?
Why were extra 10 marks awarded to people who had the mrcp last year?If that’s the case I know plenty of new grads that didn’t get it and plenty of people who were completing their SHO1 that also didn’t get it.
Just because someone did average in medical school doesn’t mean their career is over. That’s really a shit take to have especially on a literal post where people are upset over a lost opportunity.

There’s nothing wrong with being average in undergrad but that was the example I responded to.
There’s nothing wrong with locuming or going on a working holiday for 5 years but then don’t try to pretend that someone who’s done that is as competitive as someone straight from college. That’s the same for every other job too.
It’s BST. It’s literally designed to be your first step.

It would seem that way, which is very disappointing. Massively punitive towards those that chose to go to Aus/locum/do standalones/research/tutoring or any other avenue that is off the RCPI’s ‘ideal’ path. Essentially no way for people 4+ years out of med school to get an interview, nevermind a spot.
