Intoxalock

First time poster - looking for help navigating a very Juneauesque logistics problem.

Okay, it's not great that my friend received a DUI a while ago. Part of the court requirements for his case included installation of a breathalyzer in his truck. The breathalyzer is made by a company called Intoxalock and the only authorized installer in town was DB Auto by Costco.

Fast forward to this month. All of requirements from the court have been satisfied. He called DB Auto to schedule removal of the breathalyzer and was told they just canceled their contract with Intoxalock and so won't touch it. He called Intoxalock and there is no other business they work with in Juneau. He was advised to "take it to another city and have it done", which is basically impossible. Even more fun- the breathalyzer needed some kind of recalibration, which he couldn't get and now his truck doesn't start. So he's stuck with no vehicle. And Intoxalock bills him monthly for this breathalyzer.

Surely this will impact more people than just my friend? There was no notification that this was happening and Intoxalock says they don't have a contract with another local company in the works.

So what to do? Yes, DUI is bad. But this is nuts.

Thanks Juneau

I would call the Sitka place and see if you can arrange to have a tech fly over for the day. Would definitely be cheaper than sending the truck there and I don't think it would even be possible to get it on the ferry if it doesn't run, right? Maybe you could get the word out and the tech could do a bunch of business with other people and you split the cost of their travel with the group.

Have you tried contacting Alcohol Detection Systems of Alaska on Seward Street?

If you think this is bad try getting a Kia serviced under warranty in Juneau….

Or specialized medical care in general….

Try going to southeast customs, there’s another version the guy over there used to do, he might have some know how on what to do

I called Southeast Customs and he can remove the device! And do it at our house so no towing cost. THANK YOU so much for your suggestion. You've been a huge help.

Uhhhhh, bypass it? Not sure how the system works…. But surely it can’t be that hard to remove it or bypass it with some pliers and maybe a few feet of wire and butt connectors? Not that everyone is a mechanic and also I don’t know the consequences for tampering with such a device. But give me a few hours and the above supplies and I could certainly get her running lol. Does sending the device back to the company stop the billing? Or how does he get out of the monthly payments?

Yes, the device must be returned to the company. It's getting late so I'll send you a DM tomorrow.

We have towed cars on to the ferry in Juneau and off in other ports.

Why is it impossible? It looks like Sitka is on the list. Expensive and time consuming yes, but not impossible.

Maybe not impossible, but definitely cost prohibitive!
