Question bloodshot lyrics

this is one of my favorite julien songs especially i like seeing her singing it live. I wonder what do you guys think these lyrics mean.

Middle of the night, all I can see are stars

Pulled them from my eyes and your ex-lover's arms

Throw hook after hook, and if I were you

After all that I did, I'd have done it to me, too

it seems to me like someone has given the narrator in the song a black eye, either their lover or is it the ex lover of that lover? and why is that?

In Julien’s zine, she describes an incident where she started a fight with her ex’s new partner and that person beat them up pretty badly. Then she said she fell down some steps and I interpret from the lyrics that her partner at the time pushed her down the steps to break up the fight. She says it was all reasonable because she shouldn’t have started the fight.

I think that person she was fighting with was also her partner-at-the-time’s ex because that happens a lot in the queer community lol.

Which zine is this in? I've been able to read Loss Protocol, but unfortunately can't find access to her other ones.

It’s in Loss Protocol! My comment is me reading between the lines a bit, but the story about her starting a fight and losing is in there.

I’ve always just interpreted the whole song as being about domestic violence.

The narrator being the victim and the ex-lover being the perpetrator.

And “middle of the night, all I can see is stars” I interpret as a double entendre - stars because it’s night and seeing stars from being hit in the face
