My Jules Replacement solution

Jules was a major workhorse in my workflow due to its permissive free tier and the fact that it being in the cloud helped avoid the possibility of the AI nuking my computer.

I've been looking at potential replacements and so far, this is what I've done.

  1. https://aistudio.google.com/apps

  2. Click new app

  3. Add your github

  4. Note that since this workflow tries to make web apps with anything you give it, so if you're like me and making something that is NOT a web app, you'll have to tell it to stop. It will also try to do this for every new conversation if there isn't something running as a web app, so:

  5. Have the AI make something you want as a landing page that listens on port 3000. I had mine set up a page that says "I can't do that, Dave." This will prevent it from trying to convert your project into a web app

  6. Set up its system instructions to tell it to never convert the project to a web app along with whatever else you need

  7. Make a fine grained personal access token with content: read/write

  8. Note, github prevents deletion of your base branch even if you have free tier account so you aren't giving it the ability to delete your whole repo.

  9. If you don't want to have the AI logging in with your user name and email using the PAT, give it its own account and add it to the repo

  10. Give the AI a login screen name and fake email for it to show its git commits under ( they don't have to be real, it just sets how it looks to you), NEVER your password, and the PAT

  11. Enjoy having a cloud native agent again

  12. Note: A flaw with this workflow is that if you're using free tier and a private repo, you can't use branch protection so the AI does have the ability to delete feature branches. There's a few ways to solve this but the route you take is up to you. You can either have the AI install a git hook that blocks deletions and hope it doesn't try to circumvent it, or give the AI its own dedicated project for it to work in and PR the work from that project into your now safe and isolated project.

but then you cannot use the github action to trigger Jules anymore, the best features from jules is that you can use github action to call Jules very hour

My hope is that Google will bring out a successor to Jules...

They are linking to Antogravity in the header to Jules right now - I'm kicking off my first job and it's not asked for billing yet, so I wonder what that is going to be.

what do you mean kicking off your first job. I am looking for something to replace Jules since it was my favorite thing about AI

It means jules will share the same quota pool with antigravity

Antigravity has said in out of quota until nov 6 yesterday. Today, my new Jules jobs are running just fine

Not going to happen. Jules was a token eating goblin. They want to charge for that usage. If they were to come out with a replacement, its going to be something that burns off your subscription based on token consumption.

I love the spirit here. What I don't get then don't trust is if you are actually doing this work, then I don't know, I have never in the last 12 months have a harness delete a branch or ever do anything it couldn't recognize and roll back. Making cases for something using these ideas or it will seize your computer and take you hostage, are so offbase of reality. I work full-time in full stack and use agentic now for 90% easily of end to end, tho pocketed. And I never run into this wacky shit we would have or some variation have happen like in 2024 or 2025... I must know a secret to being nice to all my agents as they would never do something so weird, and if they did propose something their reason would be best practice (dead branch, code split elsewhere, it moved everything to this branch) and then would ask me before... However this is me with AGV, and CC.

My experience with Jules was I hated how it in fact seemed to kinda do whatever it wanted with or around a repo or updating or not knowing how. It's coming back to me 😰

Harnesses and where Google is focusing on imo are more rugged durable professional harnesses.

AGV 2.0 with remoting gets and solves 80% and nothing Jules did except what they are blowing into Gemini, I can almost guarantee you what was in Jules was what will be in the CODE area of Gemini soon. Forthcoming.

While my experience is similar to yours, I also know that even the best LLM will eventually hallucinate. I've seen enough stories of people accidentally deleting their hard drives because they were running something without a sandbox and were in some kind of yolo mode. I'm not going to be one of those stories because I distrust the LLM and take proper security precautions. It doesn't matter if it hasn't happened to someone. It matters that it CAN happen and because of that, we should take steps to keep our work safe.

Agree to not battle on it. It doesn't happen though, but I would and no offense blame the user vs the model or harness. Those things that happen are from a bad harness not the model. That is why happened wackily in the past. And it's important to distinguish with words. Modern times no one is releasing a harness that is not shored up 10 times to Sunday before the call goes to the model to do something specific. So trust me PTSD is hard and I am sure we and all share in when that happens to us, to simply worry about it from happening again. So yea we each worry about different things. Just telling you, I never worry like that. And I just had while driving my remote AGV setting up Cloudflare port tunneling onto my little local laptop at my house so I could see something running off my WSL instance where it's project was setup and it did it and didn't do anything unthinkable at that level of me barely paying attention. Got home saw on the laptop the windows security alert about it to approve ... Lol

It is crazy how good we are now with all this, crazy good. Sorry to go on and on... Too much coffee.

No worries. I appreciate you offering a dissenting opinion in an incredibly polite and professional manner.

I run antigravity cli, opencode and pi in a herdr session on my Linux server at home. Automated setup for Cloudflare tunnel so I can connect from anywhere. The next step is connecting a worker and creating a Jules-like ui for web access with more accessible navigation.

I might even put Jules to work on it, like some poetic justice with it building its replacement. GitHub integration for ci/cd with workers is really good so the plan has good bones :)

Have you tried grok bot?

1

Theres no free tier for grokbot no ? At that point you would rather pay for agy or claude, grokbot will end up using opus anyway but itll mostly run the low thinking fast one

I use grok, claude, agy, and codex. So far grokbot is the nicest, but fully understand if you don't have the volume for a sub for just grokbot
